Today’s female R&b artists are definitely selling an image mixed in with basic lyrics that the casual consumer can grasp . The lyrics unfortunately are meaningless, obscure, and targets an audience that dislikes men. Our artists prior to them made hits that have replay value, which many are touring off of them today, continue to decades from now

I would describe "Hookah R&B" as toxic love songs with very processed vocals and heavily HipHop influenced production

Honestly, this makes me think about Ari Lennox. Ari Lennox should be bigger than what she is. She’s bringing that neo-soul R&B music back from the late 90s/early 00s, and I really hate how some people don’t appreciate the albums she has dropped (I want another album from her so bad plus i been playing the heck out of Mean Mug 🥲).

Yeah, Ari Lennox is really in a lane of her own within the mainstream R&B! I really like a lot of her stuff. I just hate how she was treated on to her not too long ago so I hope she can keep that motivation and people will put some respect on her name

I also believe that it’s not just the vocals, but it’s the mellow beats that they use as well that results in the watered down rnb sound that we have now. Even when the singer has strong vocals, the song never seems to resonate with me bc the beat doesn’t hit like I want it to. I think it’s bc they don’t use instruments anymore since everything is done on a computer now. Edit: I made this comment before finishing the video and you actually touched on this too

Everything is just so mediocre and done with no effort or passion. People are just way too privileged nowadays to sit and put pen to paper, study the greats and give it their all. Everyone too busy trying to show how cute they are on social media. Inflated egos combined with delusional fans have them thinking they are as good as the legends.

Omg nobody else is talking about this!!! I miss when I used to FEEL their emotions in their voices. I haven’t gotten goosebumps from a song in a long time. The only recent song I can think of that gave me that feeling was muni long made for me. If I want to FEEL something in rnb music, I go back to 90’s and early 2000’s rnb.

Her music and vocals feel like being wrapped in a comforting hug for a few hours. She just remind of everything warms my heart and cozy. Her album Rose In The Dark is an absolute must and got me through some dark times. She’s also in the group Sault with rapper Little Simz

Keisha Cole’s vocals are no longer strong. Kehlani tried putting her on a song a few years ago and I think took her off? It sounded horrible, she just can’t do that iconic scream-yelling-singing like she did in “Love,” and that used to be my jam back in the day!

💯But it’s unsurprising considering we’re coming out of one of the least culturally romantic times in living memory. When Toni Braxton’s Secrets LP dropped the culture was READY to receive it. It was a more romantic time. We are still a ways from that kind of resurgence but I feel it’s coming. We are not being served by the depressing, nihilistic sentiments in current music. Being a female R&B singer myself with vocals on the FOREFRONT in 2024 is super hard. I had someone tell me that my vocals are to clear and upfront in the mix for their taste, and that was the reason why they passed on me for playlisting. People are so used to autotuning and mumbling in female R&B... I just wish I was born around Aaliyah's time. I just want to make amazing music.

when chloe and halle stopped making albums together I was so disappointed because i think their sound is unreal. Now, i fully understand them needing to develop as solo artists. when they make another album together, it will be their best work and that makes me excited. when they work together, they complete each other. without each other, they're filling the holes that they used to compliment each other and they just get better in different areas with each release. there's a lot of artist here who make me excited for what's to come

I love your content girlie! Samara Joy is an artist yall should check out. While she’s not in the R&B category and more so under the vocal jazz umbrella, SHE’S A VOCALIST and has a lot of R&B, and Gospel influences in her voice. She makes great jazz music. Should totally check her out if you want something a little different. I’m always trying to turn new listeners on to her. She’s a rare jewel in today’s musical climate.

They all have great tones, I just wish they would sing louder. There’s so much of an appeal nowadays for female r&b artists to incorporate more indie/alt into their sound. Stylistically, it’s an interesting and clever choice to use on a slower, ballad-like song, but I just think that nasally/heady doesn’t mesh well with the faster-paced, higher intensity songs. A lot of them play into that freaky quirky sad girl aesthetic, which is fine, but in doing so they tend to lose that soul we know they all have. The low notes will always deliver, but a lot of them have work to do on that chest/mix threshold, stop shying away from those high notes! We can’t hear you when you unequivocally use head and cursive singing on notes that lie comfortably in your middle range.

For Chloe, I think her music now (especially trouble in paradise) is more authentic to her. It was a big jump from her CxH image but I think that image was more curated for that duo than how she actually is. She has always been the more expressive sister who pushed it with her appearance and her performances. She’s always been more flashy and showy. She just has the freedom to show more of her authenticity and sexuality. (Great video btw)

Tinashe is the queen of alternative r&b if u ask me. Starting from her beginning when she dropped mixtapes even her albums now & when she was signed to rca. You hear all her music mixed with the r&b genre, even with hip hop elements. She really masters her sound in a different way. Very dreamy pop-ish but still r&b..its just amazing idk. Thats just my thoughts thoo!! Also a lot of these new girls u can see her influence in. Tate mcrae is one, just the way she performs kinda gives tinashe.

A 90's singer who I adore but she doesn't get her flowers is Mýa. She came from the golden era of TALENT. While Mýa has a lighter voice, she is true to the art and has continued to remain relevant since 1998. She knows her instrument. She's true RNB though she had her pop era in the major label system (hell, it got her a Grammy). From majors to being an independent artist (Grammy nominated), she is THAT girl. Was so happy to see her killing it on the Queen's or RNB tour.

I think Ravyn Lenae is definitely one to watch out for. I've been a fan of hers since she first came out and I really think her latest project "Birds Eye" is so pushing R&B forward. She doesn't have the strongest vocals but she has what I would consider to be a very unique voice that's mostly lies in the falsetto tone. She sighted Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope and Brandy to be an inspiration for her work and you can really hear it in the project.

You need to make like an educational playlist 😂 I agree that some of the overproduction in RnB can make even talented singers sound boring. Can we talk about how simply being melanated while possessing any kind of soulful or melismatic voice would cause a singer to be automatically labelled “R&B”? I grew up thinking I was an R&B-head, just to look back and realise I was enjoying mostly Black Pop stars who were labeled r&b _because_ they were Black in an era where R&B music and Pop music were one and the same. The Billboard R&B chart was literally named the “Hot Black Singles Chart” until 1990. 😅 And it goes both ways, sometimes a white pop singer would make faithful attempts at r&b but would still be labeled “Pop”. Ariana Grande has some records that are faithful to both traditional & contemporary R&B, but because she’s considered a “white pop star”, she’s not really included in R&B conversations, while other white singers like Teena Marie were welcomed with open arms. It’s interesting 🤔

@@CamrynSuzanne sometimes i feel it’s more about the branding, marketing & image, than it is about the music bc we all know if a black woman had made the ‘positions’ album it would likely be considered a contemporary R&B album. Not to mention artists like FKA twigs actively pushed back against being labeled R&B. Twigs said that before people had seen her face they couldn’t place her music but once they discovered her black heritage it was automatically pigeonholed in alt-r&b. That’s weird. This whole “pop = white, r&b = black”, thing needs to stop. 🛑 It kinda makes realise how arbitrary genre can be, and I think that’s what Beyonce was trying to say on Cowboy Carter. That album was very much a commentary on genre rather than a faithful attempt at Country.

Btw, when it comes to 90s R&B, you forgot to mention En Vogue and Salt 'N' Pepa, who were very huge at the time and even both groups collaborated for the song Whatta Man. In addition to that, Vanessa Williams had some R&B hits that helped her have some success in that genre during the 90s. Also, I think that the best R&B era is definitely the 90s and 2000s because there was a lot of diversity of genres that were associated with R&B such as Hip Hop, Soul, Jazz, New Jack Swing, Gospel, Alternative R&B, Neo Soul, Quiet Storm and so on, which added to the variety of extremely talented artists that we come to love such as Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Brandy, among others.

The thing with Aaliyah though, is that while vibe and image were art driven and strong and she favoured a feather light delivery on many of her songs, she had great technique, a range of vocal tones/registers and could actually blow when the song called for it. Unfortunately, the majority of girls who credit her as a major influence can barely sing. You could listen to an Aaliyah song and feel satisfied vocally, whereas I can’t name one Aaliyah influenced artist who has a voice I would want to listen to Acapella.

One of the best RnB singers from the 90s that I feel is still criminally underrated is Chanté Moore. She has the vocals, the stage presence, and the looks (and is still a great performer to this day) and has a solid discography. JoJo has also consistently stayed as one of the best vocalists in RnB since her literal childhood and just keeps getting better and better (same as Tori Kelly). I'd recommending giving her 2021 EP "Trying not to think about it' a listen! I realize you can't possibly mention everyone in the video, so I thought I'd give them a mention in here 🫀
