The Paul R. Tregurtha and the Lee A. Tregurtha are both ships in the Great Lakes fleet managed by Interlake Steamship Company. These vessels share a special real-life connection through the Tregurtha family, who have played a significant role in the maritime and shipping industry. Real-life connection: • Paul R. Tregurtha was a prominent businessman and former chairman of Interlake Steamship Company. The ship named in his honor is the largest freighter on the Great Lakes. • Lee A. Tregurtha was named after Paul R. Tregurtha’s wife, further cementing the family’s legacy within the shipping industry. Ship details: • The Paul R. Tregurtha, at 1013.5 feet, is known as the “Queen of the Lakes” for its size and primarily transports coal and other bulk cargo across the Great Lakes. • The Lee A. Tregurtha, at 826 feet, has a unique history as a World War II tanker before being converted to a bulk freighter. It carries iron ore, coal, and other materials. Their names reflect the Tregurtha family’s deep involvement in Great Lakes shipping and their lasting contributions to the maritime industry.

Be interesting if you talked a bit about the lakes ice season and winter port "assignments" for the various ships. I don't even know if the winter season is set before hand or if the Coast Guard gives some sort of iced in alert date. Some of the folks from afar may not be aware that the lakes shut down for winter.

I grew up 600 yards from Lake Erie. It was such a normal part of my life that I never thought it was something unique. Watching the ships roll by, the coal yard, iron ore being offloaded for the mill, heading down to the port to fish, just a normal thing growing up. Now that I'm on the other side of the planet, I kinda miss the quirky existence that life is on the Great Lakes.

When you're up at Interlake steamship see if you can get the scoop on the John Sherwin. Years ago I was in the port of Milwaukee when they towed the Sherwin in to get a load of corn. I have always been hoping as someday he'll sail again.

The USS Chiwawa (AO-68) was a T3-S-A1 Kennebec-class oiler that served in the United States Navy during World War II. I never knew what that pole was, coming off the bow. I always thought it held flags. Great, background history, images and composition. The image of the stern, as it passed, really shows how these long ships turn in such a tight space. You can see the effect of the bow thrusters pushing the bow to the left, as the rudder continues the rotation of the stern and the forward push.

It's always cool to see the Lee A. Tregurtha. She's not a consistent visitor that we see often here. At least, I don't remember her coming through very often. Anyway, great video Mike. I really love the old school "great lake" freighter. And that bow and superstructure with the sun behind it while going under the bridge was the perfect shot!! And personally, I think "Boat Friends' Snowman" works but I was also thinking and I kinda like Ariel. Like, the the AERIAL lift bridge. And I know it's a known name because of the disney princess, Ariel. But I actually knew two Ariels that were guys I went to school with.
