Fun fact about the Coast Guard ships, the hull color relates to its function. Ice breakers have red hulls for visibility in winter. Black hulls are navigation and general waterway maintenance (like the Spar) and white hulls are patrol and law enforcement. The OG Mackinaw ice breaker was decommissioned in 2006 and is a museum in Mackinaw City. It was built during WW2 to keep the Great Lakes fleet moving all year to support the war effort. Now that I think about it, there's probably a few pictures out there of the original Mackinaw and the Lee A Tregurtha sailing together, two WW2 Veteran ships together. Crazy!

It's neat that the original Mackinaw sometimes had a white hull and sometimes a red hull. Went red in 1998. All of the Coast Guard's other full-sized icebreakers had already been repainted from white to red in 1972 and 1973.

The USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30) is both a cutter and a buoy tender, making it a versatile and vital asset for the United States Coast Guard on the Great Lakes. As a cutter, it is a commissioned vessel over 65 feet in length, capable of performing a wide range of missions, including icebreaking, law enforcement, search and rescue, and environmental response. At the same time, it is specifically equipped to serve as a buoy tender, maintaining and servicing navigational aids such as buoys that are critical for safe maritime operations. Designed with advanced features, the Mackinaw excels in both roles. Its heavy icebreaking capabilities ensure that shipping lanes on the Great Lakes remain open during the harsh winter months, allowing essential goods to continue flowing. During non-icebreaking seasons, its specialized cranes and equipment enable the crew to place, retrieve, and service buoys with precision. This dual-purpose design makes the Mackinaw a cornerstone of maritime safety and efficiency on the Great Lakes, seamlessly fulfilling its critical missions year-round.

Boat friends, I couldn’t believe it, I was just a few seconds late from catching the ship as it passed only about 100 feet away from the ice shelter I zoomed in on at 7:28. you can actually see the path that the ship cut right by that shelter. Can you imagine being out there fishing inside that? The rumble of that massive ship must have been unreal, and I’m honestly amazed the ice didn’t completely break apart. The whole area had to be shaking, and those fishermen must have felt it all. It was such a wild moment and one I’ll never forget. Now here’s the real question for you, would you ever fish that close to a ship like that? I don’t know if I could do it, but it’s definitely something to talk about. What do you think?

@@vibewithmike Search for icebreaker Polaris or oblique icebreaker Baltika ice trials videos... Lots of Mackinaw's design is from Finland. Same for hull design of Healy. Must have been lots of payolas involved in selection for Coast Guard's icebreaker project started by Trump and which has so far produced nothing but budget overruns and delays. Pretty likely money spent so far would have already gotten icebreaker or two in Finland.

Hello Karen! I hope you are doing great. The weather in the Twin Cities over the next week looks like it is going to stay cold, with highs mostly in the teens and lows dipping into the single digits. There will be some sunshine here and there, but bundle up because winter is in full swing. I want people to know about the food in West St. Paul. If you are looking for some excellent dining options in West Saint Paul, there are a few spots worth checking out. Beirut Restaurant is a family owned gem serving authentic Lebanese dishes like baba ghanoush and flavorful kebabs. For a cozy gastropub experience, FoodSmith Bistro Pub offers fresh, delicious options like chicken schnitzel and steak frites. Another great spot is The Fireside Lounge Bar and Restaurant, known for its comfort food classics like the Monte Cristo sandwich and Northwoods Mac and Cheese. West Saint Paul has some wonderful places to explore, and these restaurants are a great start. Stay warm and have an amazing week ahead!

Enjoy your videos, and I'm not putting this one down, but being able to break 32" of ice is nothing compared to the old Mackinaw. I read an article years ago that it could break 10' of ice. I also talked to a guy who sailed on it, and he said back when we had real winters, there were times they were breaking 15' of ice. Though the new Mackinaw is a nice-looking boat, it doesn't come anywhere close to being able to do what the old one could do. To all that like taking tours on old boats, if you get a chance, go to Mackinaw and take a tour on the old Mackinaw. It is well worth it. That thing is a monster of a boat.

Growing up in northeaster wisconsin i remember stories of people driving cars and trucks onto the huge ice sheets on Green Bay and local lakes way too early. There were always some people seeing their vehicles break through the thinner ice too early for the season. One day in January just northeast of the city of Green Bay it was well below zero F with full sun. We walked out maybe nearly 4 miles out to the first light house just maybe 12 or so miles north of the Fox river into Green Bay. It had been a colder winter maybe mid January and the ice may have been over 12 to 18 inches thick. It was wonderful to see the huge sheets of ice. The huge suprise was it was not flat. There were huge pressure ridges between the huge ice sheets pushing the ice maybe 5 feet above the flat surface. We finally got to the light house maybe in 50 feet of less of water. It was a solid sheet of ice until it got to a circle surrounding the light house foundation meeting the water. There was a clear circular area all the way around the light house about 12 inches wide. We stayed away from the water by more than 2 feet. There was a ladder and we climbed up onto the concrete base maybe 10 feet above the water. It may have been dangerous going out onto the ice. But, we all remember that very cold, fully sunny day hiking out to the middle of Green Bay on the ice.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 15 күн бұрын
You bring up a good point about people driving their vehicles onto ice. I hope nobody ever needs to use this, but here are some tips that might save your life. If your vehicle falls through the ice, staying calm is critical to survival. Time is of the essence, as most vehicles will remain afloat for only a short time. Immediately roll down your windows to allow water to enter slowly and equalize pressure. If you can, unbuckle your seatbelt and help others do the same. Avoid opening the doors, as this will allow water to rush in more quickly, sinking the vehicle faster. Climb out through the window as soon as possible. If you cannot get the windows down in time, wait until the vehicle is almost full of water, then open the door and swim out. Once you are out of the vehicle, remain calm and orient yourself toward the direction you came from, as the ice there was strong enough to support your weight initially. Spread your arms wide and kick your legs to pull yourself onto the ice, avoiding sharp movements that might break it further. Once on the ice, roll or crawl to distribute your weight until you reach solid ground. Wet clothing increases your risk of hypothermia, so get out of the water and seek shelter immediately. Always carry a safety kit with ice picks, a rope, and a waterproof phone case when traveling on frozen lakes or rivers to improve your chances of rescue.

As a kid I got to ride on this ship. It was coming into Saginaw River. We had to board 5 miles out on bay off smaller Coast Guard ship going up a hanging ladder while both boats moving. As I was climbing up ladder a huge wave bashed water and giant ice chunks in between both boats driving the huge ice chunks upward hitting my feet. Coast Guard guys grabbed me and saved me from falling. But in the process it ripped my mother’s camera off my neck and fell in water. Guess glad I didn’t die… 😂 This ship used to be docked in Mackinaw City, MI.

You brought up a good point. I just posted what I’m going to provide below to you in the main comment section so people that might be skimming through can find it. The U.S. Coast Guard commands deep respect for its vital role in maritime safety, law enforcement, and national defense. Despite being the smallest military branch, Coast Guard members are highly regarded for their versatility and dedication, often working in challenging conditions to save lives and protect our waters. The service is notably selective in its recruitment process, making it a prestigious choice for those seeking a meaningful military career. In 2024, the Coast Guard achieved remarkable recruitment success, attracting diverse talent and meeting its goals for the first time in six years.
