It was in the early 70’s when my parents, siblings and myself got to ride on the bridge as the laker passed below our feet. The Eastwardly pedestrian walkway had a section caged off for the safety of tourists. The walkway and roadway is constructed of steel grating, so you could clearly view a vessel passing below. Us kids made sure we stood where the Laker’s stack would pass. This practice was discontinued many years ago, I’m now 63. Thanks ever so much for jogging a GREAT memory!

Yeah, you used to be able to ride the bridge: I was under it once looking up at folks! My uncle was the Construction Super for the BN construction in Allouez, Wisconsin: the bucket loader and belt transport for ore. I can recall seeing the Fitz in drydock and other places around the harbor a few times: my uncle got to meet a few of the crew and it was from that old GN dock that the last voyage commenced.

This a cool video to watch. We have similar functioning bridges on the Welland Canal, as well as some "jackknife" bridges. However your aerial lift bridge is much larger in terms of the span and the actual height and the lift height. In addition the two towers on the Aerial Lift Bridge are connected by the upper structure. The smaller Welland Canal bridges do not have that. Also, sadly our bridges are all automated, no more bridge operators on the bridge or salutes. The Oberstar is looking good too! Love the styling of her pilothouse!

I grew up right nextdoor to a draw bridge and shipyard, we used it as are own playground, swimming, diving off the bridge, 75 ft at high tide, watching the tankers come and go, they built huge LNG tankers with giant spheres for the natural gas. 1970's. They built the pocket aircraft carriers for WW11, submarines, General dynamics, Quincy, Mass, foreriver bridge.

OUTSTANDING!!! Thank You for such a great video. I was wondering, while I was watching this particular video, if you happened to have other bridges, and then I see that you have. I am a lover of Amtrak, especially Amtrak 3 & 4 rail systems, Chicago to Oakland mostly, I rarely miss them, along the route there is a bridge in Fort Madison, Iowa, which has what I think is called a swing bridge. It's amazing to watch it slowly open to allow those hugh river barges through. Oftentimes the railcam operator will do some fantastic closeups. But mostly in the interest of the trains that travel across it. The upper level of the bridge handles vehicles, the lower bridge accommodates freight and passenger trains. I am wondering if you have any videos of that particular bridge, I believe its Iowa on one side, and Missouri on the other side.

Correction to your comments. The exhaust one sees coming out of the stacks is not "steam". That is heavily laden with moisture air. Steam must be contained under pressure and heated above boiling temperature. Great Video

Hi Mike. Really enjoy your videos. Question for you: to your knowledge has the 135' clearance ever not been quite enough such that an antenna or other item on the vessel's flying bridge or superstructure didn't make it under? I'd also like to echo one of the other comments who suggests a you post an interview with the lift operator. Thank you.
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
I would love to interview the Lift Bridge operator, but I’m just a regular guy with a camera. Not sure he/she would even consider that? There have been no issues with clearance because vessels have information provided regarding the height of each bridge they would pass under. I appreciate you watching Steve.

The rounded aft ends on the older ships are so much sexier than the cheap, squared-off sterns on the newer vessels.

There is so much character when you look at those Lakers!
@mikewatson4644 Жыл бұрын
The squared-off stern is to give the maximum amount of room for cargo and still fit in the locks that they navigate.

@@vibewithmike In 2015 I would leave Abbeville early with my 16' Boston Whaler hooked to my '96 Windstar. I got stopped at this Bridge by a passing tug w/ barge. A trucker loaded out of the Rice mill came up and asked if I knew my trailer axle failed. I looked to find my right tire was at a 45% angle. Lucky my mechanic was up the road. I thanked the trucker for saving my life as flying down Hwy 82 would have lead to jack-knife city.
