The Damned was the most unique Punk Rock band in late 70s, John Peel radio programs now a diamond in music history
@Shikta-poobah6711 ай бұрын
I love the Damned more than words can describe. They’ve been my favorite band for at least 4 decades now. I’ve been loyal and faithful through thick and thin. That said, the crown for “most unique punk rock band in the late 70’s” would definitely have to go to Wire. The Damned are hands down my favorite, and certainly unique… but no one was as unique as Wire were on their first three albums.

Back in the mid to late 70s I lived in San francisco. So, one evening I am hanging out in North Beach and in place next door to the Mabuhay where I was lamenting that the Damned were playing next door but they were sold out. This guy on crutches tells me if I help him he can get me into the show. I would have helped him anyway but that was icing on my cake to get in. I helped him and he ended up hobbling up to the stage. It turned out he was the singer or the Damned! Way beyond cool! Turns out he had broken his leg stage diving.. Big yee haw!

This is one helluva Peel session and these four songs are played sensationally with perhaps even more energy than the album versions. With the defiant spoken words before Melody Lee, the Damned proved all their detractors wrong with this performance. Many critics had given their second album, Music For Pleasure (November 77) a lukewarm response and some of the public were beginning to have their doubts about the Damned. But these were completely dispelled with the release of their third album, Machine Gun Etiquette (November 79), one of the all-time great punk albums. Amazingly, all the four Peel songs here were being heard for the first time ever. Love Song and I'm A Burglar were first issued as a freebie given away to the first 250 people who attended shows at the Electric Ballroom on December 23, 1978 and the Croydon Greyhound on January 7, 1979. Melody Lee and Looking At You wound up on Machine Gun Etiquette. So these are early live versions of four very famous Damned songs, and with something to prove, the boys put everything they had into them . You must listen, for the results are extraordinary. John Peel to the rescue again. All my English mates hold him in the highest esteem. He was a true lover and collector of fine music and his broadcasts shaped many a young person's taste in music over the years. (And a big thanks to vibracobra23 whose channel is the gold standard for Peel sessions.)

excellent... the best when i was listening to them circa 1977/78... and then fell out with them during 80's... and went all the way to scotland to locate a damned lp which i really feel was once owned by my older brother and then mick hodge seemed to get hold of it and then... the rest is history.
