After one light season, the gripping stopped working. I bought LLBean Stormchaser’s and rest of shoe is in very good shape (as I said, only one winter), and when I contacted Vibram on how to restore gripping, they said they needed to be resoled. Why they worked wonderfully in the beginning, after one winter, they stopped working completely. I will NOT buy again.

I bought shoes with these soles from REI after seeing this exact demo firsthand in their store, and they're the real deal. It's amazing. Dangerous ice on the sidewalk? No problem. I have a sloped concrete driveway, and had no slipping issues after. Yes, you still have to be careful, but you won't just randomly slip and crack your skull. I was impressed enough that I bought Arctic Grip soled shoes for my older parents as Christmas gifts, so they wouldn't slip and fall during eastern US ice storms. These shoes don't seem to hold up to several years of year-round use (I'm on my second pair) so buy them for the winter, then put them away in spring so the high performing and expensive sole technology doesn't wear out when not required.

We stock several brands of footwear with VIBRAM ARCTIC GRIP and our customers love them! We tested them too and they work, although it's the same as any ice grip product, the effectiveness is not guaranteed, as it depends on your gait, how you walk, etc.

I would love it if Sketchers had this. I tried Hush Puppies, but they are not a comfortable shoe although the Arctic Grip did work.

Who cares. I have boots with this ice grip on them and it does nothing. Buy ice cleats or chains for your boots. Yaktrax makes chains for boots that work better than this lie.

I bought 2 pairs of Vibram (not Arctic grip) because I believed in advertisings like this. And I’m extremely disappointed. Dr. Martin’s are much better on ice. Cheap Chinese Nesca are also much better. I see young ppl in summer sneakers running on icy ground while I hardly can move in Vibram boots. So, never Vibram again.

Mud lug soles like Megagrip are about the worst thing you could use on ice. They're meant for digging into soft surfaces like mud, like off-roading jeep tires like KO2s. Doesn't mean it's a bad sole if you're using it wrong. You don't see people doing winter rally racing in mud tires, and it's the same thing with boots. You will slip on ice in most hiking boots for this reason. You really need to look at the lug/tread design on the outsole. Something with a FLAT profile with more surface area (the flat profile alone is incredibly ice-resistant and is why a lot of sneakers do okay) and shallow lugs (you don't want something completely smooth), like a grid-style design like SRMax, or a chevron-style tread (like Bekina Stormgrip or Dunlop Seapro) will work much better for ice than boot soles built like monster trucks. Both are good, but for opposite purposes. SRMax is what is used on Dr Martens and a bunch of other hospitality shoes like Croc Bistro or Hoka Bondi SR. SRMax is actually the best slip-resistant sole brand I've ever tried, I used to work in a freezer with Bondi SRs and never slipped or fell whereas my coworkers did all the time. A lot of Timberland and Keen boots have them too. SRMax has a website that shows you all the different brands that use them. Apart from fishing boots and SRMax, you could look into winter running shoes like Icebugs. Vibram is generally considered some of the best quality you can get for rubber soles, although some of their more specialized models (like their rock soles and their arctic grip soles) have durability issues, and the soles they make for cheap boot brands (like Merrell) are not nearly as good as the soles they make for more expensive brands.
