"how do I not let the string skim my arm", "you bend your arm". - a light bow for a beginner for fun maybe, but you DON'T bend your arm that's holding the bow. If your arm is straight and of fairly normal thickness and string travels straight, and those are at an angle (not exactly parallel obviously), there is no reason the string would touch your arm. Some people have elbows that when you hold the arm straight it naturally bends the arm inward a little, which may cause string to make contact, in this case you still keep the holding arm straight, but wear a guard.
@EllaBananas3 жыл бұрын
I was taught not to lock my arm, but hold it straight. However my arm bands backwards a good 10 degrees.
@TheWeekendWarmup3 жыл бұрын
Nerd
@ThePortraitArt3 жыл бұрын
@@EllaBananas ya you don't really intentionally lock your elbow (and you don't grip the bow with force. You simply using lead hand to push/keep it forward in position. That's why if you watch the professionals or Olympic shooters, their bow have a separate tie to their arm so it naturally just drops after the arrow is let go, minimize any variable that can be caused by gripping the bow) For most people their arm naturally are at a pretty straight position when they hold/pushing the bow, while the other hand draws the string, so they don't have to think too much about lock or not lock the elbow. Since your arm bends you generally practice holding it straight and probably wears a guard, especially at beginning.

For new archers this helps, but it trains bad habits, it also wears down your bowstring faster, so you'll want to learn a good grip from the get go. I've done archery for a couple years now and I rarely get "String Slap" only when I'm super tired and getting lazy with form. Good form means no string slap and you actually get a stronger pull strength, think of the difference between raising your arm normally and doing it in a martial arts or yoga setting. Controlled is better for your muscles too. In terms of joints and reverb. Like bending your knees a little when you skateboard.

I always remember the news telling us not to tape windows like that before a hurricane. This is because if the window does break, it might break into bigger shards that are more dangerous if they are carried by the wind. The smaller pieces would less likely to hurt someone. Just like how windows in a car are made of tempered glass which is designed to shatter and not break into large pieces. Plus the tape supposedly is a pain to get off after it heats up in the sun.
@AdDelayed3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: The X's made of tape are used on the headlights of rally cars in case they pop the glass during a race. It DOES work for keeping them in bigger chunks, on top of making it easier to clean up. Less of a risk to other drivers on the track.
@Mystic-Midnight10 ай бұрын
Doesn't it also help the glass flex because the glass on its own would be under much more stress than if it didn't have the tape
