I totally agree Dominicans are really happy and pleasant people to be around. I recently got back from a volunteer trip from the DR. They have amazing support systems from their family & friends which was really lovely to see.
@EducatedTraveler8 жыл бұрын
yes most Dominicans are very pleasant and sociable folk who loves eye contact, hugs, handshakes and creating friendships - many of us foreigners get so caught up in building wealth and assets that we miss enjoying the beautiful and simple things in life - as two proverb goes "no-one on their death bed wishes they had spent more time in the office" and "Do we live to work? or work to live?" - being able to go through life keeping everything in balance is super important - thanks for commenting and watching - Brgds Mr.T

im in the college library watching this and I feel so depressed... other foreign countries live so poorly but they're so happy,relaxed and just enjoying life with the simple stuff that they have and over here in America we complain about everything, were so stressed with school and work and were all so caught up trying to just make more money than we really need we don't enjoy life or spend time with our families and friends even the young people like myself. I just wish we could live simple and be happy like those people
@EducatedTraveler6 жыл бұрын
Hi Danayit, and many thanks for watching + commenting! I have lived and worked in several Westernized and highly regulated countries, and all this stress we experience is all part of the Governments (and big business's) agenda to indoctrinate people to strive for riches in societies, where there's always an ever increasing cost of living, more taxes, rules and fines etc..., and a push for everyone to become materialistic. There may be other problems in countries like DR, however here you will see many more happy people at every economic level, as here it's possible to enjoy many good things irregardless of ones income level (however as anywhere else, money can of-course buy you more luxury, fun, convenience, adventure etc...) but all in all, I would never swap back to the silly "rat race" again, as I enjoy my freedoms too much. The solution to getting the stress off your shoulders, is to save up, arrange online income sources, and then disconnect from that system you're in by booking a one way ticket out of there. I wish you the very best in your en-devours, and remember that "we can have anything we want in life, we just can't have everything!" It's all about life priorities. Take good care :) Brgds Mr.T

Mr. T again does a great, accurate portrayal of life here on the north coast. He presents a vast array of activities and people and accentuates the positive but doesn't whitewash the negatives and potential perils of life. I wasn't aware of all the colorful celebrations going on around me. I'll be on the lookout in the future for these festivities. Mr. T presents the true reality of Dominican daily life and I look forward to more videos discussing other elements of life here. I wish I had access to these videos years ago. Anyone looking to live here should take serious note of the issues and hints Mr. T has compiled in these enjoyable journeys.

So nothing can be posted about the DR without people trying to bash us? Everything is negative huh? The video has nothing to do with Haiti or race so why is this the main topic in the comment section? Similar to the BLM being undermined by All Lives matter, same thing going on. Also, the kids in the video, are Haitian. For so many Haitians talking badly about us maybe you should all stay on your side of the island and stop trying to claim Dominicanity so bad.
@andith6 жыл бұрын
There are good people in DR who do not deserve the nasty comments. When there are so many negative comments it is because a group of Dominican haters get to other people people's videos to insult other people. They get what they work for, and the good ones pay for the bad ones.

Nicely done. I like how you were very fair about some of the critques. Have you ever been to las Ruinas de San Francisco at the Zona Colonial in the capital on a Sunday night? i suggest you do. Every sunday (weather permitting), there is a live band playing old merengues, salsa, son, etc. it's outdoors, free, and it gives you a real sense of what dominicans like to do most: enjoy each others company, life, music, and forget their troubles. All social classes are there and it's just a great feel. It's from 5 to 10pm technically but you can get there around 6ish. You will thank me for it :).

@EducatedTraveler8 жыл бұрын
Hello Linda - yes it was on the Malecón (near the fire station)
@lindawalker45758 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering M. T. The Malécon can be a dangerous place at night, esp. like in your video it is suggested not to wear expensive gold or silver neck chains as locals will spot you, drive swiftly by on a scooter and rip it right of your neck. l have seen it done and no use to rely on the Politur pólice as they do nothing but parade around in their uniforms. It is true the more you go to the country side and rural áreas the better you are.
@lindawalker45758 жыл бұрын
l must add that l have nothing against the all-inclusive resorts, but one does not get the feel of the people and country. Oh yes Puerto Plata does have its squeggies, lol. Really slows down traffic and messes up windsheilds.

Good video, but there are some minor observations that should be kept into account, mainly because you are generalizing the Dominican population: -Not all Dominicans spend hours on their technological devices nor is this action endemic of the country since it is a worldwide phenomenon that has occurred due to the fast globalization process we are all being exposed to. This happens in the USA, Italy, Spain, UK, Brazil, Mexico, etc... - People from the Cibao Region are the ones that go to Sosúa Beach, not people from all over the country since the South is too far and the East has great and luxurious beaches on its own. -We do not buy our own food beforehand because we are trying to save money by not buying on the restaurants, it is way more expensive to do this however, we still do it because that way we can take whatever we want to the beach and won't have to move in order to find the food we desire to eat. Also, I have never traveled to the beach and not consumed something from the restaurants even if I take food with me, whether it be a Piña Colada or a ''Pezcadito con Tostones'' or something else. Same my family and friends. -''In their culture if you don't make yourself heard or seen, then you don't matter much'' This is actually not true. Yes, we Dominicans are loud, but so are Latinos in general however, the ones who make noise are the ones from the lower social classes. Middle and Upper class Dominicans are very well aware of noise pollution and try to bother others as less as possible. -Not all Dominicans live in wooden houses with no public services -Not all Dominicans rise their own chickens or buy them alive. Just like you, most Dominicans buy in Supermarkets. Mainly La Sirena, Bravo or Nacional. - Rice, Chicken and Beans (Also called ''La Bandera'') is a national dish just like in Cuba. Is not that we do not mind eating the same thing over and over again for weeks, is just that we prepare it in different ways and it is very delicious. -You WILL definitely find prostitutes anywhere in the country, but it is not as if they were walking down EVERY street, bar or park. They have their spots and they do their ''jobs'' there, but not everywhere. They are not well seen by the population but during recent years it has diminished considerably the amount of DOMINICAN prostitutes and the so called ''Sanky Panky'' however, after the earthquake of 2010 in Haiti, way more Haitian prostitutes have flooded the touristic areas looking for money to sustain their numerous children. Now a question we must all ask ourselves: ''Would I find prostitutes in Miami, LA, NYC, Chicago, Paris, Madrid, London, Johannesburg, Sao Paulo, Fortaleza, San Juan, etc...? or is it something that will only be seen in the DR?'' Overall, very good vid. I really liked it. Have fun and be safe :)

Thanks Enmanuel for your comments and some might be valid, however we would probably have to meet face to face to have enough time to potentially reach agreement on the various points you brought up, but I'm really happy you commented on my experiences as a foreigner which I've expressed through making this and other video's. If it was another foreigner making the same type of Documentary, then I'm sure he/she would see certain things in a different light from me - just saying that we are all different, and hurray for that! P.S. I met a traveler yesterday who said that one of my video's had motivated him to come visit the DR, and hearing this alone, makes it more motivating for me to make these documentaries, and if they help people build their confidence in visiting your country - that's a gift from me, and then when they get here, they will quickly form their own opinion like when traveling elsewhere. Thanks again for commenting. Brgds Mr.T
@enmanuel9618 жыл бұрын
Educated Traveler Sure thing, I'd love to discuss some of the things exposed here face to face and I absolutely encourage you to keep on making documentaries about your experiences since it is a wonderful thing, however you must be careful when generalizing a population because although your video explicitly says "North Coast", not all the people in the Dominican North Coast are the same because in Samaná Bay you will find African-American descendants with their own culture, last names and variant of english. I, for instance, live in Santiago de los Caballeros inside the Cibao Region (which the North Coast is part of) but my lifestyle as a middle class Dominican is nothing like what you showed in this video, nor is the lifestyle of any of my friends and family members from various social classes and locations in and out of DR. I am not trying to say that what you said and showed in this video is not real, all I'm trying to say is that it is not representing ALL of the Dominican Republic. Not even all of the North Coast or Cibao Region, tbh. Anyway, hope you had an awesome time here and wish you well. Come back any time! :)
@EducatedTraveler8 жыл бұрын
I acknowledge there is a middle class and upper class, and I've met many of these lovely and educated people like yourself through my connections and made great friendships with some of them, however just be aware that the next i.e. 10000 foreign travelers touring your country will in my opinion experience much more of what I presented than the middle class which is still a small minority in the DR. I recently went filming throughout the country (video coming soon!), and in every village, town and city, the lives and the mentality of many Dominicans seemed fairly similar - friendly, slow paced, low incomes, many struggling, many hustle or beg, much corruption rules from top down, lacking education or access to it, lack of good infrastructure, many nice, down to earth generous, helpful, easygoing, flexible people etc... The more foreigners become aware of the lacking things in your country, the more of them will want to visit and some will even want to help beyond bringing their hard earned travel savings. Also when a fellow foreigner presents many facts, then they can often relate better, as they know I've tried living in countries like their own, and that I'm seeing the Dominicans and their country through similar eyes. Thanks again for your input - Brgds Mr.T
@enmanuel9618 жыл бұрын
Educated Traveler the descriptions you made about Dominicans are pretty accurate and I love that about us, we are all really friendly and welcoming human beings regardless of our social class or economical condition, however the middle class is not as small as you may think. With the bankrupt of the second most important bank in the country in 2003 around 50% of Dominicans became poor, however thanks to the social programs, investments and foreign aid, the number has decreased to 36% as of 2012 and DR is the Latin American country with the fastest and most stable economical growth for 3 years in a row. This does not mean that money is flooding everywhere, since income inequality is huge here and as you stated, the corruption rules from top down. The Dominican Elite consumes around 40% of our GDP and live like royals while in areas like Elias Piña, most of the people lack basic public services and live in self-made mud huts to provide themselves with shelter. We must remember that DR is a Third World country that has been developing as a real country barely since the 90's, and has managed to slowly become a very important hotspot in The Americas, not only in tourism. My issue with documentaries made by foreigners is not that they show the poverty of the country (since as you said, that is the side you are most exposed to), is the generalisation that's always made about us all as if we all lived the same lives chilling on the beach or struggling to survive. Things are hard for pretty much everyone that's not part of the Elite, but it doesn't mean that we are all living on minimum wage, prostitute ourselves, beg, lack education or lack infrastructure. There are more than 3 million people in DR that suffer all of this, but there are more than 7 million others that do not. Life in DR cannot be measured by the same standards as life in the USA or any other First World country. It needs to be measured by the standards of poverty and development the UN, WB, BID and other renown international entities provide. What may seem poor to you could be relative and be considered rich in Haiti, for example. Thanks for being kind enough to read and answer me with such politeness. Hope you can understand what I'm trying to say. Enjoy, Mr. T

How much are those big mansions or villas. I'd like to know.
@EducatedTraveler8 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddy - at the moment it's a buyers market down here, so quite large villa's go from $400000,- and up to a few million for the Giant ones - depends on which gated community or area it's in.

I thought the beaches were topless - they were a few years ago when I went there And yes cleanup the beaches so you attract more visitors Learning English would be a $ bonus too. I saw 2 restaurants beside each other with menus outside - one menu was only Spanish the other was Dual English / Spanish which one did we pick???

The U.S. State Department Says: While pickpocketing and mugging are the most common crimes against tourists, reports of violence against both foreigners and locals are growing. Crime levels tend to rise during the Christmas season. You should take extra precautions when visiting the Dominican Republic between November and January.

Hey Mr T! You're videos have been super helpful. I'm planning to move from Sweden to DR for the winter in November (between Sosua and Cabarete) And I see a lot of advice for men traveling alone. But I wonder if it's safe wor a 30 year old female to travel alone? (At daytime, not flashing any bling bling.)
@EducatedTraveler7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tardee - Thanks for watching! Anywhere in public here on the North Coast, is pretty safe. When you come here, send me an email to info@educatedtraveler.info and I can help connect you to some good expats and even other ladies i.e. scuba instructors etc... and both myself and/or them can teach you the ropes on how to deal with the locals, transportation, safety of yourself, avoiding harassment by local men/hustlers and securing your belongings etc... We are always happy to help, as we know what it's like arriving here in the "wild west". But it's a lot of fun if done correctly. Hope that helps. Brgds Mr.T

Thank you! One more question, do you really recommend me take vaccines before taking a vacation in D.R for two weeks? I am from Norway!
@EducatedTraveler6 жыл бұрын
No vaccines necessary. As much as they call it the tropics here, you'll most likely be in a very modern environment with hotels, restaurants beaches, shops etc... now if you were heading for the amazon and planned to enter the jungle, well then my advice would be very different :) If you do get any tummy issues, then "Loperil" can be purchased at any pharmacy, works wonders. Have a great vacation and Happy New Year! Brgds Mr.T

I travel there frequently. Never give your important information to anyone. Don’t leave valuable possessions laying around, and becareful who falls in love with you. Many people want to go to the USA and marriage is the easiest way. Just know your in a foreign poor country and keep your eyes open because there’s good and bad everywhere! Poor people do things out of necessity many times. It is a beautiful country with very happy people.
