As a Dominican, for me its very interesting how foreigners see us. Of course -and regrettably- most of the conclusions drawn by your experience, come thru contact with poor, lower class Dominicans. Nonetheless, your deductions -considering this- are correct and useful to the tourists or foreign residents. I enjoyed the video a lot since it was a lighthearted -albeit serious- way to try to deal with a lot of frustrating (also to the majority of Dominicans) stuff we have to endure here.
@EducatedTraveler7 жыл бұрын
Hola Mr.Morales! Many thanks for your comments. I have been on one road trip (which I made a Documentary of), yet I'm looking forward to again exploring not only different parts of your country, but also to experience meeting many more Dominican people and their approach to me as a foreigner. I'm of-course hoping to meet a lot of down-to-earth and nice folks, and hopefully after this I will be able through my videos to re-assure viewers that the true Dominican culture exists primarily away from the Touristic areas. Take care! Brgds Mr.T

@@EducatedTraveler Hope you've been to the major cities since then as it's vastly different from the look of this video. There is a huge middle class in the major cities with extensive infrastructure.
@EducatedTraveler5 жыл бұрын
The tourists are been educated about where they are heading, and trust me they are heading for small beach towns as most of them are sick of being in a city. They will meet the type of Dominicans that live in and around these beach towns, so if this doesn't show the Dominican Middle class, then so be it! If you for some strange reason wish to prove to the world that you too have a middle class, then maybe produce your own video on this topic or write an article. Just my view on it, but thanks for watching! Brgds Mr.T

Excellent presentation on how things really are in Sosua. I have been going on vacation there for 9 years (31 times) and learned a few things the hard way in the beginning. Mr T tells it like it is and hopefully will save guys some grief. The part on falling in love and being a Western Union boyfriend was great. I was with him when he shot the part at 11:34. This is a wonderful vacation spot to have a good time if you learn to avoid or say no to the obvious scams. Sosua is fun, relaxing and very safe if you use a little common sense. nomadic traveler the highway police are very decent and educated if they help you with any issue with your car they don't even going to take any tips because they're from the army school. But the ones with gray uniform those are the true scumbags. If you avoid them or avoid troubles with them you'll be fine and will love your trip.
@Kricke877 жыл бұрын
Many things are so true, but the baseline is what type of "gringo" you are where your at. If you come here to party and be in places where "bad" things can happen it's a great posibility that it will happen, like in any other place in the world. I have lived here for more than 5 years and never had any serious problems, and the few times I have had some times of problems it's always has to do with cars. One time I changed my car for another and I got scammed real good. Not so nice experience but you learn by your mistakes. But as in living in any another place you have to be able to learn to live with the frustrating things or try to fix them or just leave. As a foreigner you often have the choice if you cant stand the frustrating things you can actually leave. Also another interesting thing, many of the "frustrating" things that were mentioned, isn't only frustrating by us "gringos" but also by the locals. Dominicans in general respect the law, don't like the problem with the prostitution, see the traffic situation as a big problem as the same with the corrupt police ,which is also another story. That in my opionion is mostly because they "hire" very young persons that are drawn by the fact that they get "power" and a gun to play with and that they are VERY underpaid. So knowing they can abuse their power to get money with out any greater risk of punishment they sometimes do it. So my tip is, stay out of trouble and you'll have a great stay here.

Christoffer Carlsson Excellent observations and very informative. Most importantly regarding your views, is the fact that many men who visit the DR are there for 4-5 days, and just to have fun and sex. So the population they deal with is not necessarily the more everyday working class regular women. As always when you come to play ...you get what you pay for!

you are right about those drivers, they usually are uneducated and insolent persons. They didn't care about the others, some of them usually drive with led bars and fog lamps on. Another factor is that they drive with very dark tinted windows and the country is poorly illuminated, so it is hard for those drivers to see at night so they wont hesitate to use all their lights no matter what may happen to other drivers. This is a big problem in this country but police do nothing.
@EducatedTraveler6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave! Thanks for watching and commenting! A lot of guys here get their windows tinted for privacy reasons (chica's etc...) so when they drive they can't get just how bad they are blinding others with their high beam on, which is crazy and dangerous, as when you're blinded you can easily drive straight into a moto with 3 people on it as you just can't see it (especially when they have no rear light) - yep it's crazy on the roads!

Hello Mr. T, I really enjoyed your video many thanks for that. I'm going to Sosua early December to do some diving. Just one question though. I rented an air bnb apartment which is about a 20 min. walk into town. Is it safe at night to walk around or is getting mugged after dark a real risk in the Sosua area ? Many thanks upfront for your time.
@EducatedTraveler8 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Thanks for your compliment on my video! Best is to call a Moto concho and then arrive in the middle of town (A mature and nice moto-concho guy is Alberto (829-258-2570) and he's fair on price i.e. RD50 to most places in Sosua. Here you're always safe if you're in the public eye whether day or night - in other words no-one is ever held up at gunpoint in public, however just be careful about your wallet, device etc... especially with the ladies and hustlers. Never leave your stuff on a bar-top or table, as the second you look away that's when someone might pinch it. People will beg and hussle, yet learn from expats how they answer these people and pick the reply's you like best i.e. "baby you buy the 1'st drink and I'll get the second one - sound fair?" and then she normally disappears - Expect you'll have someone ask you every few minutes if you're sitting alone - tough getting that much attention :) Anyway, hope this will help and have a great trip down here + feel free to stop me if you see me, cheers! Brgds Mr.T

Hi Tom, when you live here you see it all, and I believe from all the feedback I get from most, that most folks wants to see the reality of the place. The reason so many tourist and new expats have been blinded in the past and fallen into traps, is because they didn't know hardly anything except what they saw in the sugar coated promo videos, but that's not what I like to produce. Thanks for your compliment and comments - yes it's nice and sunny here right now (and most of the year) - The best thing to do if you're tempted to relocate to DR, is to visit here till you're clear about whether it's a place you could live and be happy. Some can't handle the hustling and other factors, some handle it well. Many of the determining factors as to whether you will end up being happy here, comes down to our own beliefs, actions, who you hang out with and your boundaries with both the Dominicans and the big mix of foreigners. Thanks for watching! Brgds Mr.T

The high beam headlight thing is so you can see the people in dark clothes walking on the road at night. YES, it's irritating, just slow down & glance to the right.
@EducatedTraveler7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, - however while I'm being blinded, I can't see neither the road, a motorbike with 3 people on it, or the people in dark clothes walking on my side. And if I because of this blinding hit a bike or pedestrian, then I become the victim and go to jail while the true culprit goes free. Usually when two cars come at each-other with low beams, then there's sufficient light for both motorists to see anyone in-between. Just my take on it, and thanks for commenting. Brgds Mr.T

I'm a Dominican, and take it from someone who's been there, done that. It is an unbelievably frustrating country to live in. Nothing ever gets done on time, no reliable electricity service, corrupted government and police, and worst of all, we hold the Guinness book record for the highest, per capita, road deaths in the world.! .. In other words, driving around here is a death wish.! Still, if you're the laid-back type who doesn't let stuff like these get to you, then you're gonna be ok. Every day is an adventure, especially in the "touristy" areas like Sosua. I wouldn't personally live there, but if you're bored with life, and like a bit of excitement, nothing like the DR to get your mojo going. Believe it.

Hey I'm Dominican from New York City. I visit DR at least 4 times a year. Your video is pretty accurate... I was skeptical about you offending my mothers beautiful country but in turn I ended up agreeing with you. At the same time being from NYC most of the annoyances you mentioned about DR like traffic, noise pollution and panhandlers doesn't affect me cause it's so abundant in NYC that I find relief from it in DR. I agree with your thoughts on roadside littering and driving education. I agree that Dominicans should be taught to value their precious land and protect it. (Litter is not found in all locations..BTW.. most places are clean. The country side is pretty clean, it's the city and neighboring areas that are affected by litter) About driving education... I feel safer in DR than I do in US... They may not follow the laws and people cross through intersections with a wink or a nod of your head but the traffic flows. You may be half an inch away from body work but everyone is on the same page... Traffic has a flow. If there where a blackout the difference between NYC and DR is that there is less aggression on the roads and traffic will flow. It's a great place and I'm glad your enjoying it. Peace and love!

great comments! I agree that the traffic here flows, and yes it's because people often use signals, body language and communication to decide who goes 1st. I actually enjoy daytime driving here more than in other countries, except at night where folks refuse to lower high beams. They need more signs and education on the effects that it can have when the "blinded" driver hits a motorbike or pedestrians in his/her side, as they couldn't see anything. The good thing though is that here people don't just blindly drive forward because the light is green, where overseas many accidents happen because people trust too much in traffic lights. Thanks for watching! Brgds Mr.T

Yes books could be filled with the stories of fake love romances happening down here - Regarding your friend: "a good listener is a good learner!" once they fall for one of these girls, then if you tell them, then they start to think you're the bad guy or jealous, so sometimes it's just best to just mention to them what to be cautious about, and then let him learn the hard way, sad but true. Take care! Brgds Mr.T

Whether we like it or not, the Men traveling over here have literally become the missing welfare system for the many ladies who travel from everywhere on the island to the tourist beach towns. I know many guys who in the past found a girlfriend in the Sosua area, and then suddenly they end up moving to the town or city where her family resides. Many of these Dominican families benefit greatly from the often too generous Gringo. Other guys send money down here to the girls and visit periodically. So based on the Governments lack of interest in creating industry and jobs, many of these ladies want the foreign men's money badly, and many of them will lie, cheat steel and let him down in order to get as much from him as possible, so they are in many cases not as innocent as they may look. Also most of these girls have one to 3 children already, and are looking for someone to take her out of her often sad situation. Brgds Mr.T

Mr. Serge Stutz: How come it is a "huge problem" or, "totally unacceptable" when "old men are running after young ladies"? It is human nature for men to run after women, and in many many cases young ladies are more desirable to be run after than older editions. And for the young ladies it is their free choice to be run after. In case the lady does not want to be run after, then she has the means to make it clear; the older men are not a security issue of high-grade. Surely it is not a problem of the law-enforcement forces in DR. More likely it seems to be YOUR personal problem... ;-)
@EducatedTraveler7 жыл бұрын
Hi Hans, thanks for watching! I totally agree, and I'm a big believer in "voluntary association" between people, and here the ladies will hunt the guys much harder than the other way around, so the girls are not the innocent little sweethearts that some "cry babies" try to make them out to be . And all hunting of either girls or foreigners by the police, is purely to extort some quick cash for their greedy pockets. I interviewed him in order for viewers to understand the general mentality of cops here, not because I agreed with most of his comments. Brgds Mr.T

I live in Pattaya, Thailand, and here we have very similar name of the game: The girls are chasing very very voluntarily all ages of guys, and no one forces them to do the profession they have chosen. (Yes, you might say that the circumstances have "forced" them to choose the profession, but I doubt that to very high extent. I have seen during these 20 years so many stories of young girls who prefer the easier work of "entertainer" over traditional hard-labour works. It is not that there is no other work here; quite the opposite!) What comes to the police here; they do not extort from the girls, but mainly from the bars and go-go clubs; and actually it is not so much extortion: It is more like voluntary "co-operation" between the clubs to ensure the undisturbed business where the girls are are a bit too lightly dressed. :-) After all, prostitution is illegal here. And so is all too much sexy; especially this year that we are living the mourning time of the late King passing away. What is VERY similar to the DR instead is, that also here we have these old-fart expats that are wanna-be police officers: They have no other status than working voluntarily and assisting the police, but in their own mind they are the biggest SWAP-team on the Earth, the most important sheriff in town, the highest authority within the reach of a yell, and the greatest defender of humanity; almost super-heroes! In reality they look pathetic, act ridiculous, and are simply just old farts in uniforms. (Sometimes even self-made uniforms; many times they wear these uniforms even on their freetime, and mark their own motorcycles or battered old cars with "POLICE"-signs.) For some reason they are trying to fill up some lack of respect, authority and capability in their personal lives. Hmm... I wonder what that might be... ;-) Please, when I grow old, and if I start mumbling about joining the foreign voluntary police, please hit me hard to hopefully gain back my senses and self-esteem.
@EducatedTraveler7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Hans! that was fact-full and funny reading :) and yes, here we get our fair share of wanna be cop's as well. In regards to the actual Police harassing girls and foreigners here (with city halls approval), it just shows how far behind DR is compared to Thailand in regards to understanding how to nurture, attract and retain more tourist for massive profits. Over here, this financially and "self sabotaging" behavior by Governments and their troops, seem so illogical to any foreigner observing it in action, and after a while here, we're just waiting for the next wave of stupidity to kick in from upstairs, whether it will be the immigration detaining tourists and expats without doing proper due-diligence, or the police again raiding another popular club - and the list goes on... You kind of learn after a while here, just to stay clear of this crap by not owning a club or the type of business that they typically hit, and to stay clear of Police who's always looking for an excuse to fine people for their personal gain. Speaking good Spanish also helps a lot to fend moochers off. However once one learns here who to shop with, and who's a scamster, then life becomes a lot easier, and you then start enjoying the many freedoms that are here compared to highly regulated countries, the weather, beaches + the good people (who there's many of here as well). For people who settle here, It's a rough journey learning how to live fairly unaffected by hustlers and the scamsters - certainly not for the fainthearted! Here it's vital for foreigners to find other good foreigners, to tap into their knowledge and contacts of who trades with honesty and who doesn't. Take care! Brgds Mr.T

This was a very informative comment from you: It is eyes-opening to see how you face the exactly same kind of stupidity from the authorities like we have here. Slightly in different forms, but amounting to the same kind of shooting in their own leg. I have the intention; for the very first time, to visit DR in a few weeks from now, and this point of view of yours is very much appreciated. It is exactly the kind of information that I seek. I know that there are shadows in every paradise, and I know that behind the scenes, and big smiles, in every place there are issues to deal with. I also know that by not being too "blue-eyed" it is easier to melt in and to see the bigger picture. However, understanding that there are issues in your country, will not frighten me and stop me travelling there; quite the opposite! I very much await to see your beautiful country! All the best, and thank you again for these extraordinary videos!!!

Brayan, Never confuse facts with pessimism! If you were moving to the US, and a Dominican warned new-comers about what typically frustrate Dominicans when they arrive in USA, and then some American Nationalist criticized him for simply outlining helpful facts, right from dealing with their strict customs to what could happen to you, facing the extra million rules and regulations over there on roads and in society, wouldn't you then consider such critique pathetic? I've been all over the world, and each country has it's bad sides, and it's great sides - no different with the DR. If you want to watch me point out mostly all the positive things about your country and culture, then watch this video from my channel - but bee warned, some lovely Dominican viewers shed a few tears in pride when watching: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joa0pWZ4eLd1d6M Here's a couple of proverbs for you to think about, and these could relate to any nation improving themselves: "The enemy of Success is to become good enough!" "You can sheer a shear a sheep again and again, but you can only rip the skin off it once!" Stay open to learn and forget about government built borders - us humans all have the same basic needs irregardless of nationality, skin color etc... let's just focus on what can be improved anywhere we might be, and off-course celebrate/enjoy what is already great in any location. Thanks though for watching! Sincerely - Mr.T (Global thinker)
