I dont care what peoples views are on whether hip hop is art or not but DJ Premier is an ARTIST because to sample less than 4 seconds of a 6:37 long piece of music and identify that as something that could potentially become the basis for an entire piece of music is GENIUS nothing less SNM

As a huge fan of jazz, soft jazz, etc. And a huge fan of hip hop. This tune does many things for me obviously. Vic and this collective put together an amazing piece here back in the late '70s with this one, love that classic Vic guitar, and then DJ Premier took a small slice of heaven out of here and turned it into a whole different thing with guru pretty damn slick from front to back. Today I kick back and listen to the original as I have many times. Maybe later I'll go listen to some GangStarr.

hmm the 4 bar 12 note phrase on Vic's version was probably improvised on the spot by pianist Barry Miles, so isn't he its creator? The similar first 2 bars of the phrase on Mass Appeal is only 5 notes. Can one copyright claim 5 notes played in an improvised solo as one's own unique creation? If so, every rock and Blues guitarist in history must be guilty and pay originators like Chuck Berry. Call the lawyers they can duke it out.

Sounds a bit similar to my experience. In early 1982 Vic came to Melbourne with a faculty of jazz educators to host a 5 day (all day) jazz clinic. I was 22 and into rock and blues (and developing a love for the jazz sound and 'fusion' in particular). I had to audition before the 1st day of the clinic - as everyone was then placed in either the 'beginner/intermediate' or 'advanced' student classes. Vic wanted me to play a blues as a solo (chord melody) and I had no clue then, and he then just played stuff that blew my mind. I didn't make the 'advanced' class ! :-) It was a great experience being tutored by players of that standard for 5 days. The other guitarist faculty member present was Steve Erqiuaga. We were allowed to bring recording devices of the sessions. I should have converted all these to digital, but only converted a few samples (regretfully).

For all those who praise a dj for sampling this, with all due respect to you and that person please respect the fact that these jazz musicians- whether Vic Juris, Jack Wilkins, or Ronnie Foster - had no idea what hip hop was at that time and had no intention of creating something that would be used in it. When I hear this cut I don’t hear a hip hop sample. I hear a great jazz fusion record influenced by Metheny and Martino, but no sample.

sounds like cross between Benson & Martino. Sounds like it belongs on the Benson & Farrell album.

THIS is what sampling is! People like Kanye Pest just steal the entire instrumental and hook of a song that was released a year prior and puts some crappy rhyming over it.

sampling can be whatever, nobody should choose what sampling should and shouldnt be, the only thing that matters is it sounds good.
