Hi. Excellent job. I have been given a vice of this exact same model and am beginning a restoration. What is that product you are wiping on at 3:56?
@westers15146 жыл бұрын
Nice vid. A red oxide primer would help with the paint adhesion and stop it chipping so easily; cast iron is a bugger to paint as it's so hard and smooth, hence a good primer really helps the top coat become a stronger finish. I've got a Record number 6 I'm restoring - what tap size did you use to clean out the jaw threads? Yeah, good job on getting it back up and working.

Any tips on what sort of paint to use and filling grinder gouges? I've just picked up a model 36 which has some heavy cuts on the front and needs a full strip down, clean, and re-paint.
@AFreeMovingSpirit8 жыл бұрын
Hello, I had a enamel mixed after choosing the colour at the local car paint shop... gave it seven coats allowing only an hour in between each coat I think it was... if you let the paint dry too much it will react when the next coat is applied then left for 5 days to fully harden. For any large gouges I would fill with the mig welder... hope that helps you out a little... thanks for your time on watching the video...

Nick Wright. Sandable auto primer, lay down a couple fairly heavy coats, and wet sand in between with 400 grit sandpaper. That should help.

You should try a wire wheel for the angle grinder, 20x more effective than drill wheels, and for future reference, the hottest part of the gas flame is near the tip not 1/2 an inch from the torch.

Aldi sometimes does a large air compressor and various attachments. one being and sand/grit blaster and some bags of grit. keep wondering if I should buy it, got some rusty metal fence and gate that'll cost £300 to dip and paint professionally. buy that kit from Aldi would be £100ish max.

The result looks really awesome. So not to be nitpicking or something, but electrolytic rust removal would've saved you the pain of prying the thing apart and sand blasting the whole thing would've enabled you to do it with less elbow grease. But to each its own I guess....
@AFreeMovingSpirit8 жыл бұрын
Hey hey, A huge thank you I'm very Happy you like the end result. Nah it's not nitpicking Thanks for the advice, though when doing this vice I had never even heard of electrolytic rust removal, its would be awesome to speed up the process if i have another rusty job to do so thank you.
@CoolKoon7 жыл бұрын
Sure, you're welcome! One word of caution though: the electrode you'll be using to do this will be completely consumed by the process (unless it's an inert electrode), so make sure you use iron (a piece of sacrificial iron), carbon (graphite) or an inert electrode (gold, platinum, theoretically MMO electrodes should work as well), otherwise the material you'll be using (e.g. copper) will be "nicely" plated onto the half-rusty item you're trying to derust. Also please note that using stainless steel as the other electrode will make the chromium inside the stainless steel plate into the water, making it toxic (you're not allowed to dump into the drain stuff that contains hexavalent chromium ions, a very soluble and toxic form of chromium). Have fun ;)

That is a beauty. Is that an audio book in the background? Also, you are the fist person I've seen that used an impact screwdriver instead of a grinder- thank you for doing it properly. And what is that lever on the bottom, a quick release?
@AFreeMovingSpirit7 жыл бұрын
Good Morning, Thanks for watching and for your comment. it's good you noticed the impact driver haha. It sure is a audio book, Tarzan of the Apes! Yeah the lever at the bottom is quick release it's great I use it so much. Again Thank you.

A VISE is a holding device, usually mounted to a workbench. A vice is a bad habit.
@AFreeMovingSpirit8 жыл бұрын
That's the American spelling, it's Vice here in Britain Mate.
@lebommjohnson81018 жыл бұрын
Honestly didn't know that. So what word do you use for smoking, drugs, prostitution, etc.?
@AFreeMovingSpirit8 жыл бұрын
I think we use all the same words for them just the odd spelling here and there are different, why I have no idea haha.
