That is a good size vice with interesting features, but there is a whole big, different world out there from the little shops that we inhabit. I had something in an old, big industrial shop to be worked on, and the vise they used was roughly four times bigger than that one. I’m not giving more info because the neighborhood is already bad enough without a bunch of nuts trying to break in to steal their vice. Thanks for the video. Keep having fun and take care.

Wow, that's a really fucking cool feature. Never seen a swivel head like that before. My only concern is, why not use grease instead of oil? And also, on that note, how do you add oil in the future for maintenance? Do you have to disassemble again? Or is there like a fill port somewhere? Alternatively, if you used grease, then perhaps a Zerk fitting or two.

Oh yeah, I have a similar vise and right around that weight I think. A Starrett 646 It's a serious chunk of Iron. Most of the time if find if you have porosity while welding cast iron, grind it out and weld it again. Sometimes you have to do that a few times to bake out the crap. I find it all depends on the iron. Some cast iron simply does not weld at all. Some welds like steel. most of it falls in-between. I guess it depends on the make up of it and what the service conditions were over the years. Nevertheless , good stuff here, well done.

@timmer9lives
@timmer9lives 3 ай бұрын
Or weld a nut to it. But the sponsor is WD. Probably don't want to offend them. Bronze bushing looks nice but now the rod is smaller diameter. So it's going to bend easier. And a vise that big, hell I've used cheater bars on smaller vises. One more note. You really don't want bearings on the screw. That friction is what helps the vise stay tight when beating on something. That bearing is going to make it easier to losen up. A bronze washer would have been a better choice IN MY OPINION. But, to each their own.

This was difficult to watch. While working on a metal vise with bolt holes, on a welding table with holes, it's constantly slipping around as you work on it. It didn't occur to drop a bolt or a bar to anchor it from sliding. When pulling the greasy dirty slide jaw out, on an old and heavy vise, it might be advisable to have the heavy steel table under it rather than your feet. I think I would have put some wood or metal blocks and wedges in the hole to put force on that pivot pin before wasting time modifying a cheap jack. The jack was being mangled under the force while the pin was sitting where it had been for generations.

Never had a cat as an adult but my mom was a cat lady. My wife and I inherited her cats and at one time had 20. lol got that down to 5 and now we have 9. 5 feral cats and they are all nuts. So yeah lots of buckets!

By the way, cut a hole in the side of my house with a kitty door. Put a deck box outside where two kitty liter boxes are with a 120 mm exhaust fan. No kitty liter in my house. Everyone thought I was nuts when I did it. Works flawlessly.

Nice job. The cast welding was interesting. I've been welding cast for about three decades now and I've never seen it done that way. It's good to learn alternative ways to do things so I'm going to put your idea in my back pocket in case I ever need it. My usual method for welding cast is to pre heat the parts to 600F (use a temp stick) and then stick weld it with 3/32" Super Missile Weld, peen with a small air hammer between each pass. After that wrap the part in fire blankets and leave it until the next day. Great videos, keep them coming.

My Dad had one just like that, it came out of a 1930's vintage metal shop. After he died, my brother in law sold it along with most of his tools.
