2 years living in Estonia and you see this digital world everywhere. It is part of your normal day as a resident. As an immigrant (from Chile) working in the IT sector I can tell you that Estonia is developing and what is most important, creating state of the art digital services. Definitely a country that has reached a technological level that you cannot find in other countries. Great for Estonia and its people!

@Byteau I think you should apply for a job from Canada ahead of moving there. Once you have a job moving there is pretty easy. Often the companies even take care of the paper work.

@Byteau hey, nice that you started to learn Estonian. Even if is not mandatory, as most of the young population here speak English and most of the IT environment is in English as well, but estonian people really appreciate when immigrants speak their language, specially cuz is considered very difficult. Answering your first question, the IT sector have a lot of benefits, one of those is bring expats to Estonia without the need of waiting of the yearly quota for non european workers, this mean that it quite easy to get a job in one of these companies (if you have the skills). I recommend you to check this website www.workinestonia.com

@Young Tang we work with Muslim people and they have shared their friendship and taught us about compassion. The moment Estonia will go to hell is with people like you Young Tang. I have been travelling and living abroad for several years now, and Muslim people are not the responsable for the issues in our time. I can name you one responsable: "intolerance". I see that with your limited mind you didn't understand the purpose of this thread, that basically is to share the experience about how is to live in Estonia, so I recommend you to start a new thread in this video for special people, like you.

for us in Estonia the stuff that is presented here is rather underwhelming and been around for a while now, its more or less common sense on how we operate these days, there are still gaps here and there regarding the tech we use, especially in user experience design part but at the same time these are being fixed one by one, but we could do so much more still, i think we are still scratching the surface here regarding digitizing stuff around us and cutting the size of the people working in the public sector through the usage of technology and automation

@@slothymango It's theoretically possible to have privacy with digital systems. Look into homomorphic encryption for voting and zero knowledge proofs for data. Doing everything in paper is not better. A government still can see all your data in that form. If anything it's already better in Estonia, because you can see who saw and accessed your data. If anything digitizing that data is what makes it secure, as you can eventually move toward more and more secure solutions, like storing it in blockchain. Estonia already uses a blockchain.

@@joech1065 Firstly its not just about Votes And secondly, every piece of encrypted data can be cracked. Just ask Gary Mckinnon who hacked into Pentagon and NASA. My brother studied IT and also is saying the same. Best example fir the average public to look at is the gamesindustry and all their countless attempts to create uncrackable data and roms. Anything upload into the world wide web is archived somewhere, passes through servernotes(Serverknoten/Zentralen) that are owned and controlled somebody and that data uploaded on the Web will be archived forever somewhere. You seem naive and not too versed in these matters. Also what makes estonia proof of a corrupt government? Nothing, as all the foreign-political decisions point to exactly that. This is what I miss as an estonian who lives abroad. Here in the UK I have to get a physical green prescription slip for my medication. Last time I saw one of those in estonia was probably sometime in the 00s. Some meds can be prescribed "digitally" here in the UK but it takes 48h and you can only collect them from a specific chosen pharmacy. And that only applies to repeat prescriptions, for new prescriptions I've always been given a paper prescription. I've seen a brit "digitally sign" a document by taking a picture of her signature and pasting it at the bottom of the document... The UK, along with most of the world, is miles behind Estonia.

Right. Almost all ideas are great when their creators and users are operating within a framework rooted to benevolent principles but, as we see all too often, our current world is dominated by a system with a framework rooted to principles based on competetive self-interest that ia completely decoupled from sustainable behaviors, both socially and ecologically. The speakers in this video seem to be caring, for the most part, but it doesn't take much for caring efforts to be coopted and corrupted.

i think they are scared for something. im guessing identity theft. But here id say it is near impossible to steal someones identity. than you would need to kill him\her and he must not be reported and you would need to have his fingerprint + id card + all of the codes + face + phone. and mobile number with the correct sim card. and you will never use the card in a public place and you never change it (witch you can't do like passport 5 years ) and that person can not have any friends or familiy. because or else you are declared dead for example and all your logins are closed. a dead person can not use ID card. so yea. you would need a commitment or i don't know what to do it in here. just easyer to apply or just be yourself :D

Because Social Security numbers are not designed for Identification, I find it hilarious how most of the world is shocked when they find out Americans place so little trust in their government. When you look at how badly they fuck even the most basic task, it's not that surprising. And i say this when i live in a country who's government is so utterly incompetent and technologically illiterate no sane person would trust them with paper scissors let alone some sort of federal ID. The US government almost looks competent in comparison.
