***** A transgendered person may be born a male - but they always feel they are female. The gender does no match the sex they were born with. They just don't decide one day that they want to be female. It's something that they have been dealing with their entire lives and when they are of age they finally have recourse to deal with it. You really need to do some research. Also, sexual orientation is not the same thing as gender identity so yours is a straw man argument.

These types of treatments are very dangerous. Many years ago I went into one of these place , and I've almost killed myself. It was horrible. Somehow, I was able to break free from their brainwash, I felt much better embracing my homosexuality. I felt so much alive after a leave them. Life is hard for anyone belonging a minority category. I have a daughter who, did not grow up with me and turned out to be gay too; she has a son who’s no homosexual, and yet, he grew up knowing his mother and grandfather are gay. There’s no right or wrong. I am what I am and that’s it.
@DodgaOfficial3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, once I accepted myself and just integrated it into my identity it was so freeing and all the guilt and shame I used to feel just washed away. Being gay is not something to be ashamed of, and there is no "gay lifestyle." Being gay doesn't mean you're promiscuous by nature like these people imply, I'm still gay even when I don't have a sexual partner, it doesn't go away just because I'm currently celibate. People in general need to just embrace who they are and not try to change themselves to fit societies standards and expectations.

I think that Journey Into Manhood place could exist without having anything to do with conversion therapy and I think it would be a really valuable resource! There are a lot of men of all sexual orientations who have experienced abuse, emotional and physical isolation, trauma, and a general sense of "otherness" from the unhealthy masculinity complexes society shoves down our throats who could really benefit from a safe communal environment with men experiencing similar struggles. They have a choice to pursue whatever lives they want, I just think it would be nice for there to be a resource like that for men who are looking for an emotionally open and supportive environment- just without the whole 'the only way to fix you is to fix the gay part' thing.

I understand your perspective, but I think it is factually uncertain. Firstly, homosexual sex is found in many animals other than humans (Here's a long list: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animals_displaying_homosexual_behavior ). Secondly, gay people don't switch to the same sex because they have sex with / masturbate to the opposite sex too much. Not a single gay person has claimed this to be true. Most gay people recognise that they're gay long before they have sex and have never had an attraction to the opposite sex. This argument is entirely basisless.

I actually attended this “Journey Into Manhood” weekend years ago. These videos portray it accurately, but omit many of the more disturbing practices led by unskilled, unlicensed, non-professionals. One of the men I attended with ended up committing suicide. One of the founders - Dave Matheson - has now come out as gay and disavowed his harmful practices. Thankfully, I survived and - shocker - I’m still gay and have happily been with my partner for 5 years now. If you are reading this and considering conversion therapy, please know the people running these camps are deeply misguided and ashamed of who they are. You are beautiful just as you are, and your sexuality does NOT need any repairing!
@dziobak1015 жыл бұрын
Also, Rich Wyler - the other founder of “People Can Change”, which apparently now calls itself “Brothers Road” after all the scandals, and who is featured in these videos - lived as a gay man for a long time then decided to be a good Mormon boy and marry a woman. He claims to be happily married, and he also happily makes money off of vulnerable, religiously abused, gay men convincing them they can “heal” their sexuality. I’ve seen him get naked and frolic in the woods with other naked men in “non-sexual and healing ways.” Stay away, people!
@roccoz22315 жыл бұрын
I knew there were a lot of bizarre and disturbing rituals that took place at "People Can Change" / "Brothers Road", but this is the first I've heard about naked frolicking. Can you tell us more about it?
@dziobak1014 жыл бұрын
Rocco Z oh yeah, as part of their later “advanced” weekend, they all get naked together to “demystify” the male body and “confront their body issues” and whatever other nonsense. They pretend like it’s a non-sexual way for boys to just be boys together. It’s great for reducing a person’s shame around their naked body, but obviously has nothing to do with their sexual orientation, and is just another way for repressed gay men to try not to be gay while actually being gay.

I went out of my way to tell him it they were wrong, and its ok to love who you love, and it starts with loving you for you. I saw him a few years after graduating high school with his boyfriend at a art show one night. He told me he thought about ending his life when he was forced into conversion therapy the summer between 11th and 12th grad, but everytime he was about to swallow that handfull of pills or cut himself with that knife, He heard my voice saying; "You are my child; I created you and I love you just they way you are," The guy told me thats when he knew he was gay and no one was ever going to change it.

It kinda sounds like people in the camp you visited are trying not to live the 'gay lifestyle' rather than change for being straight... The licensed (as he seems to need to highlight - can you buy these titles in the US?) psycho therapist in the end said that as well... I mean the whole wife and child talk is nonsense, but except for that: You don't have to go to the gay scene and put yourself into the gossip pit. You don't have to go to sex parties. You don't have to go to pride or do activism either. You might as well just join a theatre group that perform 'Jack and the magic beans' to make friends there and maybe fall in love with one of the other guys there... Being gay doesn't necessarily mean your life has to consist of party, drugs and sex. You might as well meet up with a friend and have a glass of wine while talking about opera. Or you might just live the life with wife and children. Just with husband instead of wife. You know, in order to, you know - be actually happy... And yeah, I am aware of the horrible practices of torture out there. That's obviously nonsense and would never work. Anyway: Homosexuality ≠ 'Gay lifestyle'.

Watching this I realize how lucky I am. I'm 14 and bisexual, and I came out to my best friend via text. My parents read my text messages and set me down and told me that they loved me, and respected my choices if this is my decision. Now, that I'm 14 and allowed to date, I can chose either gender, and they will not be upset with me, and I'm currently dating a girl, and they treat it just like every other relationship. Just as nosy and overprotective as any other parents and I love it.

I don't care if my kid is gay. I wouldn't want him to wind up like these dudes, thinking he is broken and needs to be fixed, funny how that's the same reason I try to shield him from Christianity. There really isn't any conflict in this video as much as vice tries to structure it that way. The LGTBQ community is fighting for a ban on gay conversion therapy on "children" which is decided on by their parents. This is reasonable and makes sense. The other side of the video is grown men who are not satisfied with who they are and are making a conscious decision to try and change that. Nobody, regardless of their experiences can tell those men that this is wrong. Those points being said, I fail to see any conflict in this video and am puzzled as to why Vice would structure the video in such a way as to try and create conflict. Hopefully others notice this too and see the truth of the situation.
@EnnoMaffen10 жыл бұрын
I didn't feel like VICE tried to make it seem as if there was a conflict. I actually felt the exact opposite: While I am disgusted by the whole "gay conversion therapy"-bullshit, this VICE report really made me empathize with those grown men who freely chose to join such a therapy group. I didn't see that perspective before the video.
@kyleginnetti209910 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing.
@NPHfann10 жыл бұрын
Enno G. So you empathize for the men because they are putting their faith in a supposedly false practise?
@MrOrientalDuce10 жыл бұрын
I agree. I admit I had some preconceived notions about gay conversion therapy being detrimental to the youth, under pressure from society and religion. But this video shows both sides in a good light by showing that this "conversion therapy" struggle is more about personal choice and living to each individuals' identity and ideal views of themselves. If anything, I came out of watching this with more disdain for the anti-conversion side because their closing comments seemed very narrow minded in that they thought that conversion therapy was a "total crockery." I would've liked Vice to show homemade video testimonies of how therapy positively influenced now-straight people, not just of their negative influences. In all, I think outer influence effects our opinions of ourselves too heavily, and that we should educate people on self-awareness and encourage them to find their own self-expression in their sexuality.

What they did in the camp was effectively to induce a strong repression. You can tell the counsellors all shared a kind of latent self-hate in their voice, like they were constantly exerting effort to bar something off from resurfacing. Funny how that 'psychologist' babbled about social construct, but didn't recognize his belief to be one as well. Disturbing stuff.

***** This. I think most people are somewhere in the middle of the extremes, though there are those that exist with only hetero or homo attraction, I beleive they're less common. But the way our social structure works, its much easier to define our selves in terms of one or the other, so most people do.

Yeah, I wouldn't blame God for any of this.. He's pretty clear He loves everybody, no matter what. Period. Anybody saying otherwise is leading you astray. Oh, and for you people who will inevitably come at me with some Old Testament stuff- there is way too many points of contention to go over. Bottom line, God's actions have always been justified. Sorry, I won't be responding. If you want the answer to whatever point you'll try to make, see my original statement.
@bensamuel83728 жыл бұрын
I would actually like you to reply to my comment because I'd like your opinion on my only problem with it. How do you feel about people who are gay being a part of the Christian community due to how the majority of the folks going to church judging/ostracizing/talking down about them? Sadly, these folks who speak about their all loving Savior don't practice what they preach, and I fear that anyone who's openly gay in a Church community will be treated badly by others even if it's not upfront. :o
@lucasdwright8 жыл бұрын
Two sides to that, both are rooted in the Bible. The first is the obvious, "he without sin should cast the first stone"- the implication being there is no justification for judgment from someone without blame. The second side comes from after the time of Christ, particularly with Paul in one of his letters to the new churches. Paul is very clear the Church as a community needs to be proactive in it's treatment of evil practitioners; the Church should work to fix it. The methods he lays out are very simple, approach and rebuke, approach and rebuke as a church, and finally to cast out those who refuse to reform. So we have two methods, one is love by action of love, and the other is love by action. Christ is very clear in his life's message of salvation, his sacrifice being the ultimate expression of love. Paul, in his own life, tried to act as an interpreter. Where Christ laid out few to no rules, Paul attempted to create a system based off of inspiration from the Holy Spirit. My inclination to trust the method of Christ over Paul certainly wins out on this particular issue. But you know, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if the whole world thinks what you are is evil, if God doesn't see it that way, you're going to be just fine. On the other hand, even if the entire universe thinks being gay is okay, but God doesn't, then it doesn't matter. Either way, who decides what is right and wrong is whoever can enforce their opinion. So it doesn't matter if you can't convince some people that what you do, in this case being gay, is not immoral, because that's a dialogue you and God need to have, and not just need to have, but *will* have.

Maybe if people dropped this notion of a God altogether and took control of their own lives, we wouldn't have such issues with misinterpretation and the homophobia that follows.

Being gay isn't something that you choose to be, you are born that way. When people say its a choice, they are planting that idea in your mind, and make you believe it. These people here choose themselves that they want to change, and thats up to them, I highly disagree with people forcing others to come here out of their will.
