I am now disabled and in a nursing home. Back in the day, 1970's, it was perfectly normal to hitchhike. We never jumped trains just stuck out our thumb and went. Usually had about 2 bucks in our pocket. I lived out in the country. All I had to do is walk to the paved road and I was on my way. Sometimes it was just to get to town, sometimes it was to see America. That is how I saw the Grand Canyon. We traveled the whole western USA. We thought it was a blast, met amazing people, they fed us, kept us in smokes, gave us a place to crash and were all around great company, really good, open hearted people wherever we went. The further south you went the more open and friendly the were. As a very pretty teenaged girl I was frequently asked if I wanted to have sex. The answer no way never a problem and always respected. Road with a little of truckers, they really took good care of us, even finding us rides when they hit the end of their run. They were always just happy for the company. A really great bunch of guys, a lot of family men. Even though we were all having fun they would seriously try to talk us into going home and to stop hitching. Rode with a lot of average Joes, and some Janes. We went camping with some who were on vacation. We had people offer to drive us home to Oklahoma even though it was several states out of their way. Most people we met were very concerned for our welfare. I thank God for a Mother who prayed for me every day. We spent our summers this way. Then we grew up a little and got on with the business of life. Found out about Ted Bundy, the serial killer of young women. He was operating in the states we were hitching in the same time we were there. My school pictures of the time looked just like every one of his victims. Then heard about the truck driver that had a torture chamber in the sleeper of his truck. He picked up young hitchhikers and chained them up in there. He would keep them as a sex slave until he murdered them and dumped their bodies and got a new one. His time line matched where we were a couple of times. Some of girls he admitted to killing bodies were never found. Probably Jane Does buried in some podunk county that could never identify them. I gave my kids a pretty free reign. The stipulation was I had to know where they were and who they were with. If plans changed just call and let me know. If you were going to be more than 5 min late just call me. If you couldn't get home call me, I will come get you no questions asked. When cell phones first came out, the big ones that you carried in a bag, both my teenagers had one. Out of my own 3 and their various friends that lived with us I only had one night of not knowing where my daughter was and she called at 5AM for me to come get her. I knew who she was with by where she was. She admitted years later that I had been right, she was drunk and passed out at their home. My son always told his friends that lived with us "just call, it isn't worth her having the police, the sheriff and the National Guard out doing a house to house search for you". Nothing bad ever happened to any of them, although they came home kind of drunk I never said anything. They came home or I knew whose house they were at. They knew I would check with the parents. I never let them know about my adventures and I thank God I was still around the have them and raise them, not in a grave with Jane Doe on it.

I’m 35 now. When I was in my early 20s I dropped out of college and hitch hiked/ hopped around North America. Started in Denver, hit the west coast in Arcata CA, went north to Vancouver, switched and headed south alllll the way to La Paz, Baja, Mexico, went back up north across the border, through the 4 corners, and finally back home to Denver. Truly one of my greatest experiences in life. To anyone reading this and struggling: I hope the best for you! @@rolux4853 Those are great questions and ones I do not have definitive answers for. My previous comment was referring and questioning whether or not the show directors obtained some form of 'legal documentation'. Perhaps the skits may have been 'stunts' or 'planned' scenes so the producers knew what to expect, informed the relevant institutions/initial investors and thus avoided legal action. Whether or not they did this, I have no idea but I appreciate the time and effort the entire crew put into this series - it's very entertaining!

Happy 4th of July to every American. I'm proud to say that I was an immigrant in the US for 7 years. Despite all the negative stereotypes Americans receive, Americans are the most hospitable, compassionate, and intelligent people I've had the honor of meeting. I lived in a suburban area in a red state and I was much more well-received there as an immigrant than where I live now in western Europe. This documentary shows how beautiful the US is with all its variations in landscape, climate, and regional cultures. I've been to 23 countries, I've lived in Singapore, I've been to Switzerland, and I currently live in Norway. I am convinced that the US is the only country in the world where the pros outweigh the cons. Billions of people would do anything to set foot in the US let alone be born and raised there, I hope Americans don't take that for granted. Have a great 4th of July.

Actually the railroad was built by the chinese and irish, most railroads didnt use slaves or freed blacks because they cost to much. The Irish and Chinese just so happen to be flooding the country at the time and would work for cheaper then anyone. My family moved here from dublin and i had family that worked on the railroads....the Irish and Chinese were not treated well needless to say.

The non meme answer is he has a studio production camera (by mid 2000s standards) the batteries generally had long life times (up to several days on some of them) if he brought atleast 2 spare batteries then he was set for well over a week of continuous filming.

Star Trek isn't communist but the societies are post-scarcity so people aren't enslaved by menial labor for the sake of ensuring reasonable living standards. There is still private property but technology has progressed enough for universally sufficient living conditions.

I remember when I first saw this series it was in 2014. I know that it's way later than when it came out but it wasn't aired on TV here in Denmark so how could I've seen in any other way. But when I saw this series, I instantly rewatched it. I was - and still am - going through high school/college (it's different here in Denmark) with no idea of what I wanna do after school in terms of education and life in general - that was until I saw this. I mean, it wasn't like I said: "I wanna be a fucking dentist now", no, I still didn't/don't know excactly what I wanna do (but who does that?) , but I learned, after watching this, what the purpose of what I was going to do was going to be; *Do what YOU want, and not what ANYBODY ELSE says you should. Don't be afraid to fail doing what you wanna do - because failure is inevitably, and everything will work out in the end, and you will be fine.* So yeah, I basically learned that I needed to start *living* and I have followed - and will continue to follow - that purpose ever since. I will leave you with this Wim Hof qoute: "I do not fear death; I fear to not live fully."

I was thumbing from Montgomery, had my guitar on my back. When a stranger stopped beside me in an antique Cadillac, He was dressed like 1950 half drunk and hollow eyed... he said its a long walk to Nashville would you like a ride son. I sat down in the front seat of that ol Cadillac, and them sad old songs comin out of them speaker was solid country gold. And then I noticed the stranger was ghost white pale when he ask me for a light. And I knew there was something strange about this ride... He said drifter can you make folks cry when you play and sing... can you play them toons can you moan them blues can you bend them guitar strings. Drifter can you make folks feel what you feel inside... because if you're big star bound let me warn you its a long hard ride.
