A witch is a gender neutral term. Pop culture has made it out to be that only women are witches. A warlock is typically a term used that is derogatory as it means “oathbreaker” ... calling yourself a Wizard or Sorcerer is just a term you can use in place of being called a witch, but a witch is a witch regardless of gender or sex.
@FrancisMaxino5 жыл бұрын
A witch is a term that can be used that is derogatory as well, in a slang sense, I disagree because the standard meaning of warlock is a male witch and it is not 'typical' at all to use it in the context of the meaning; 'oathbreaker', look it up in any dictionary, it basically says a male witch or wizard but there are no references to some alleged 'typical' meaning of oathbreaker. Its typical meaning is actually male witch.

"Wizard" is taken from the term "wizened", meaning "withered" and, by extension, "wise". JK Rowling appropriated the term for her fictional world of magical characters, and that's fine. But by traditional definition, no mere child could be a wizard. "Witch" is a bastardization of the term "Wiccan", which was a form of nature worship. It was largely suppressed by Christianity but survives in pockets here and there. Wiccan is not gender specific. I'm less familiar with the rise of the term warlock, but it seems to have something to do with Satanism. But don't quote me on this.:)
@suckseedorsuckeggs2 жыл бұрын
Wicca is a modern take on traditional witchcraft of the pre Christian European world and so is the word Wicca.The word witch also comes from the word wise having to do with accumulating esoteric knowledge and the ones who practiced it. The word warlock I've heard comes from everything from a shaman,an oath breaker,to someone who has been banished from their own culture.

No need to watch the video. In french words that describe jobs or occupations often have a male and a female version, and usually for the female version of the words an "e" is simply added at the end. So, the word "witch" in french is "sorcier for men and "sorcière" for women, with an "s" in its plural form. Now for wizards, there isn't a real equivalent, maybe, magicien, magicienne for women. SO.... The interesting thing for the english language, is that words rarely have a gender difference to describe men and women, HOWEVER, the word witch is such an exception. That man, regardless if he wanted to be a wizard or not, isn't known as a witch. He's known as a warlock for that is the male equivalent to witch. Men are never witches just like women are never warlocks, but both genders can be wizards, magicians, mages, shamans, fore-tellers, augurs, etc. Fun fact: Molly Knox Ostertag book series The Witch Boy (i know he should be referred to as a Warlock, but I'll forgive this)... so The Witch Boy has been translated in french. Now, in the books, women are witch/witches while men are shapeshifters (that's not a spoiler, it's the premise) and the series tells the story about a boy that prefer witchery, thus he's referred to as a boy witch. Now, since in the english language, the term witch and warlocks are really different, calling a boy a "boy witch" makes sense, it's in the french translation that it loses its impact. As I've written above, in french, almost every words that describe occupations have a male and female equivalencies and determining which version is used is just a question of conjugation like verbs. So, while it's understandable that in french, they would want to call the witch boy, le (the) garçon (boy) sorcière (witch), EVERYONE that speaks french would simply refers to him as "le Sorcier". Like french speaker would actually start debating why he should be referred to as "le sorcier" instead of "le garçon sorcière" simply because that's how the french language works. Heck, in the last two decades we've had a ton of debates on how certain words should be written this way or that way as attempt to simplify the languages and wokifying it. And for the wokification of french, female equivalent words are meant to become MORE different, not more similar. Anyway, I'm stopping my rant here, hope you appreciated. Cheers. :P

What brings you happiness and what makes you live your life to the fullest. Although the meaning has changed over time Witch seems to originate from 'wicca' and 'wicce' the masculine and feminine words for 'wise one' in Old English. Wizard is from the Middle English words of 'wiz' or wise and 'ard' or art, thus 'art of the wise'. Essentially they mean the same thing, its only difference being a matter of time. That the word witch is later takes on the connotation of feminine evil is the results of ecclesiastical and aristocratic power plays over the poor.

@@hm.7735 I apologize for the idiot who last commented "same thing" they are just unaware and are just simple minded, apparently witchcraft is evil according to this mans, guess its just to complex for his underdeveloped brain to comprehend, sad. (Maybe they need to do more reaserch as not all magic practicioners are evil, some do alot of good.)

STFU Idiot What does the Bible say about witchcraft / witches? The Bible has a lot to say about witchcraft. Witchcraft and its many cousins, such as fortune-telling and necromancy, are Satan’s counterfeits to holy spirituality. The Bible expressly condemns all forms of witchcraft. Since early times, people have sought supernatural experiences God did not endorse. The nations that surrounded the Promised Land were saturated with such practices, and God had stern words for His people concerning any involvement with them. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 says, “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.” God takes witchcraft very seriously. The penalty for practicing witchcraft under the Mosaic Law was death (Exodus 22:18; Leviticus 20:27). First Chronicles 10:13 tells us that “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance.” In the New Testament, “sorcery” is translated from the Greek word pharmakeia, from which we get our word pharmacy (Galatians 5:20; Revelation 18:23). Witchcraft and spiritism often involve the ritualistic use of magic potions and mind-controlling drugs. Using illicit drugs can open ourselves up to the invasion of demonic spirits. Engaging in a practice or taking a substance to achieve an altered state of consciousness is a form of witchcraft. There are only two sources of spiritual power: God and Satan. Satan has only the power that God allows him to have, but it is considerable (Job 1:12; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 20:2). To seek spirituality, knowledge, or power apart from God is idolatry, closely related to witchcraft. First Samuel 15:23 says, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” Witchcraft is Satan’s realm, and he excels in counterfeiting what God does. When Moses performed miracles before Pharaoh, the magicians did the same things through demonic power (Exodus 8:7). At the heart of witchcraft is the desire to know the future and control events that are not ours to control. Those abilities belong only to the Lord. This desire has its roots in Satan’s first temptation to Eve: “You can be like God” (Genesis 3:5). Since the Garden of Eden, Satan’s major focus has been to divert human hearts away from worship of the true God (Genesis 3:1). He entices humans with the suggestions of power, self-realization, and spiritual enlightenment apart from submission to the Lord God. Witchcraft is merely another branch of that enticement. To become involved in witchcraft in any way is to enter Satan’s realm. Seemingly “harmless” modern entanglements with witchcraft can include horoscopes, Ouija boards, Eastern meditation rituals, and some video and role-playing games. Any practice that dabbles in a power source other than the Lord Jesus Christ is witchcraft. Revelation 22:15 includes witches in a list of those who will not inherit eternal life: “Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.” We don’t need to fear Satan’s power, but we should respect it and stay away from it. First John 4:4 says, “Greater is He who is in you, than he who is in the world.” Satan can create much havoc, harm, and destruction, even in the lives of believers (1 Thessalonians 2:18; Job 1:12-18; 1 Corinthians 5:5). However, if we belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, there is no power that can ultimately defeat us (Isaiah 54:17). We are overcomers (1 John 5:4) as we “put on the whole armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). When we give our lives to Christ, we must repent. This repentance should include renouncing any involvement with witchcraft, following the example of the early believers in Acts 19:19. Isaiah 8:19 says, “When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?” When we follow those words to their logical conclusion, we could also ask, “Why seek any power apart from the source of all real power? Why seek spirits who are not the Holy Spirit?” Witchcraft and its many counterparts promise spirituality but lead only to emptiness and death (Micah 5:12; Galatians 5:19-21). Only Jesus has the words of life (John 6:68).
