This is a pretty common joke with extreme sport instructors. Skydiving instructors are notorious for saying stuff like, it's ok if you die because I already got paid. It's just dark humor and entirely harmless. The goal is to drive up your anticipation so that you feel a bigger rush of adrenaline. These people are extremely safety conscious. Any injuries or deaths are bad for the entire sport and none of them want that to happen. They know their gear inside out and they know the safety stuff inside out.

My father was an instructor and tandem pilot for 20yrs he used similar 1 liners to give people the edge.... Made for a great laugh afterwards .... I can't fault Claude from this video. Some people as much as their wants and intentions are just not suited to paragliding and can't appreciate the unpredictable nature of the sport

Paraglider here. Claude seems like a good, safe pilot. Kit looks clean and he’s very through walking to different take-offs to find the best one. I don’t think the one-star reviews understood things, we play it as safe as we can and sometimes that involves more time or, gasp, walking in or out. I also loved his little point about the crow, all good paragliding pilots love birds and their behaviour. I think Claude said it best; some people should go to Disneyland.

I appreciated his response when he mentioned "Disney Land" as I know exactly what he meant. People expect everything to happen on time, at their pace, and perfectly. Paragliding is not an amusement park ride. Sometimes we sit at launch for hours waiting for the perfect conditions. Sometimes we go home without flying at all.

As a paraglider myself I can tell a lot of these reviews are from people who have little understanding of the sport. It is completely weather dependent, and the pilot has little control if a flight needs to be canceled due to conditions, also it is nothing like base jumping and far safer. As for the complaints about landing off beach, depending on the conditions you can get caught in sink and experience forced descents through no fault of the pilot, as long as the landing is safe that's no reason for a bad review. However, He should probably do a better job briefing people on these possibilities and have clear policies about refunds etc in place.

It's bullshit. His student didn't die of a heart attack. The whole paragliding community hates him. Here's a quote from somewhere else: "Fiset has already been completely banned from all the sites in the Santa Barbara area - they know how dangerous and reckless he is. The several times I have witnessed him and his students, I was amazed at how undisciplined and unsafe the activities were. I have seen a crash or unsafe event each time. Indeed, as noted above, after the accident, Fiset was advised to lie low and avoid the site for awhile. HE WAS OUT THERE THE NEXT DAY GIVING TANDEM RIDES. He is only concerned about his business. His quote in the local Malibu paper, if it is accurate, that the pilot "must have had a heart attack" demonstrates how ignorant and deceitful he is. He and anyone familiar with the site knows that heavy west winds can be very dangerous and a pilot can easily rotor out in that exact spot and get whacked. I have no idea how experienced this pilot was, but he should not have been flying (especially alone) if he was a new student of Fiset's, and especially in those conditions. I actually like Claude's personality. No bullshit, no unnecessary information, just what you need to know when you need to know it. Some people are just like that, they don't mean to come off as standoffish. I always take reviews with a massive grain of salt, some people are just not built for certain situations and have unreasonable expectations, you cannot take their advice. It's fuckin' paragliding, there are a million different variables that can change at any moment and you're signing up for that.

Bro I have my own plumbing business and sometimes I get the most bizarre, negative reviews. Sometimes people act nice and satisfied and act like they were totally happy with the service and then I see that they left me a one star review. Growing up I had a lot of peers that didn't like me because I was "weird" so sometimes I chalk it up to that, just different personalities. I wish that it wouldn't cause people to disparage my business though. Either way it's given me a totally new perspective on how much consideration I should give to online reviews.

@@JasonTriple7 In skydiving (Not sure about paragliding), there is something called tandem jumps which basically means you are attached to an instructor while being taught the basics and core mechanics of parachutes and skydiving in general. You also have ground school where you get to get comfortable with your tools and skills that you need to remember while skydiving. I suppose learning skills in paragliding is very similar for skydiving. So I guess the moral of my explanation is that If you do your research and have good instructors, part of your fear will go away because you know you will be in control while flying since you learned the basic skills. Its completely rational to have fear, but the fun you will have sure as heck will outweigh your fear. I hope you enjoy the paragliding hobby if you decide to go into it. Good luck man! :)

PG pilot here - It is an inherently dangerous sport, people shouldn’t expect the same risk level as a commercial airliner. Things happen! You’re at the mercy of the weather and terrain available to you, you won’t always make LZ, you may brush some trees on the way off. Seemed like a good pilot, just doesn’t have a very official looking business. I’d fly with him!

I completely agree with Claude -so many people are used being waited on and coddled while on holidays. Youre not at a resort lining up to ride a banana boat, you’re jumping off a cliff. An instructor who is professional and courteous and delivers on experience is all you could hope for. Because he didn’t act like a servant or like a tour bus guide, he gets slated
