The Real Kenny Powers From 'Eastbound and Down'?

Күн бұрын

The HBO comedy Eastbound and Down ushered in of a new type of dark hilarity and became a television cult classic in the process. The protagonist, Kenny Powers, is an obnoxious, crass Southerner who has fallen from grace after his professional baseball career has abruptly ended. But who was the inspiration for the character?
At the height of his career, John Rocker was one of the best closers in professional baseball, and also one of the most disliked people in the game. In 1999, comments he made that were printed in Sports Illustrated came to represent the worst of American culture: racist, homophobic, and xenophobic. He apologized for the remarks later, but Rocker's crass and confrontational nature never died, and there's something kind of lovable and funny about the guy; after all, he's just a baseball player. Or maybe not? This is the real Kenny Powers.

A lot of people ask me, ‘Kenny Powers you’re a giant star - you can get any woman. Have you ever paid for sex?’ The answer is yes, I have. Several times in fact. And it’s actually kind of cool. You can negotiate practically anything, and sometimes even just kinda do stuff in the moment you never agreed to pay for, and it goes by without much argument.

Look at Rocker's stats from 1999-2001. The guy appeared in 201 games over the course of these three seasons. 162 games per season = 486. Basically Rocker pitched in roughly forty percent of baseball games every season. His arm was destroyed due to overuse, which happened to guys like Johnny Venters, Mark Wohlers and Eric O'Flaherty among others. They all played for Bobby Cox and hall of fame manager that he is, the man ruined many a bullpen arm. But such is the life of a relief pitcher, here today and gone tomorrow.

John Rocker is clearly the inspiration for Kenny Powers. The main stepping off point was Kenny was a polarizing redemption story and John Rocker's redemption is private. Also, John is not really a bigot, he seems to hate everyone that's not like him equally -- white, black, females or whatever. I do not share his opinions and most items, but he's at least genuine. He's the real-life internet troll -- unfiltered and unrelenting. On the other hand, he does good for things he cares strongly about and puts effort into that as well (of course, mostly he just cares for himself... but still). I could not stand to see someone like him daily, but there is room in society for a John Rocker and he seems to be getting on (even though his Twitter feed is VERY difficult to read).

Most people can't handle people who don't say what others want to hear and have an attitude like "you can take me as i am and if you don't like me, to bad". Everybody is always trying so hard to be liked by everyone because they are afraid to be rejected. When they are conftonted with someone who doesn't play along with their facade they feel something is wrong or weird with that person, or are jalous that they don't have the guts to do the same. I can relate very much to this guy. Don't know who he is but understand exactly how he feels. Tough apperance, misunderstood but to people who matter to him very warm and helpfull. and dedicated to things that actually matter instead of worying about what others think. Also very little patience for bullshit. If you don't like me, too bad. There are so many people i don't like, It happens. Mind your own business and move on. thats what i do and works great for me. A lot less stress

People throw the term troll around so often now it's lost all meaning. Beyond popular belief there is a difference between being a troll, and a asshole. Trolls say things they don't care about knowing they're going to get a rise out of people. Assholes can say things that will get a rise out of people, but they don't say it to get a rise out of people. Rocker fits in the Asshole personality category(Not saying he's a asshole) People on the internet need to learn the difference because there is one. Example in this thread: CFergiee Troll ***** Asshole/Troll* Cantryss Asshole *Read below

Nice interview. . .I'm black and can truly appreciate people who are unapologetically themselves. You'd be shocked at how many of us shun liberals/hipsters/soy-boys. EVERY race is prejudiced to a certain extent; if someone's an asshole and living their truth, I'd respect them any day over a follower pretending to politically correct: the asshole gives me the liberty of knowing whom I'm dealing with.

Feel the same way. We ALL have prejudices. They surround us and we grow up with them. Some of the prejudices may have some basis in fact but people are way more similar than they are different. The important thing is to appreciate the differences, not dwell on them.

This guy got the rap as being an uneducated bigot/bully, but I was surprised at how well spoken he was at times during this interview. This is an example of one comment from 17 years ago, still haunting this man to this day. What makes America great is giving someone a chance to redeem themselves even after what appears to be a permanent fall from grace.. As a former baseball player/fan I loved his competitive streak and take no prisoners attitude that every great closer must possess to be great. As a former Marine, I am even more impressed with what he has done to help former vets who have fallen on hard times, by providing the opportunity to become productive members of society again. As for Kenny Powers, the man was hilarious and gave me something to look forward to watching EastBound, but the only similarities between the 2 are how eerily similar their voices sound, and the fact that are hardass relievers from the same part of Georgia.
