Activist Tenzin Tsundue is no stranger to lockdowns. His family came as refugees from Tibet to India, and he was born ‘in-exile’ in India.
He’s been arrested 16 times, for his protests and for the violation of restrictions on the movement of foreigners in India. Now it's common for him to get detained when a Chinese leader or Head of State visits.
We meet up with Tenzin as he continues to protest - whether it’s as a panelist on primetime TV shows discussing India and China’s border skirmishes, or as he is shouting rallying cries in the streets of Dharamshala, and even when he’s walking 500 kilometres to protest against India’s acceptance of the One-China policy.

"History clearly reveals that the old Tibet was not the Shangri-La that many imagine", he wrote "but a society under a system of feudal serfdom." Until 1959, when China cracked down on Tibetan rebels and the Dalai Lama fled to northern India, around 98% of the population was enslaved in serfdom. Drepung monastery, on the outskirts of Lhasa, was one of the world's largest landowners with 185 manors, 25,000 serfs, 300 pastures, and 16,000 herdsmen. High-ranking lamas and secular landowners imposed crippling taxes, forced boys into monastic slavery and pilfered most of the country's wealth - torturing disobedient serfs by gouging out their eyes or severing their hamstrings. Tashi Tsering, now an English professor at Lhasa University is representative of Tibetans that do not see China's occupation as worse tyranny. He was taken from his family near Drepung at 13 and forced into the Dalai Lama's personal dance troupe. Beaten by his teachers, Tsering put up with rape by a well-connected monk in exchange for protection. In his autobiography, The Struggle for Modern Tibet, Tsering writes that China brought long-awaited hope when is laid claim to Tibet in 1950. After studying at the University of Washington, Tsering returned to Chinese-occupied Tibet in 1964, convinced that the country could modernise effectively by cooperating with the Chinese. Denounced during the Cultural Revolution, arrested in 1967 to spend six years in prison and labour camps, he still maintains that Mao Tse-Tung liberated his people. Continue reading here. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2009/feb/10/tibet-china-feudalism And this The Dalai Lama's impressive salary Conspiracy: The Dalai Lama is a CIA agent. The truth: Perhaps the reason the Dalai Lama is smiling in all those photos has something to do with the six-figure salary he pulled down from the U.S. government during the 1960s. According to declassified intelligence documents, he earned $180,000 in connection with the CIA's funding of the Tibetan Resistance to the tune of $1.7 million per year. The idea was to disrupt and hamper China's infrastructure. Source www.rd.com/culture/conspiracy-theories-that-turned-out-to-be-true/

We support Tsundue la. Freedom of Tibet is in every Tibetan's heart whether she/he is living in Tibet or outside. However today there is a powerful treacherous force in the exile community that actively works to silence the Tibetans from saying what is actually in their heart. Forcing Tibetans to say what a few thinks is the right is not democracy. Tibet may not be free for another century but demand for a free Tibet should never change or die. Charismatic leaders will come and go but Tibetans should never confuse Tibet with a leader. If you look at the geopolitics of today, the wind of change is coming definitely. Tibetans need to be alert and seize the opportunity. Policies of appeasement and prayers will never work.

What an extraordinary gentleman with a brave heart struggling for freedom of our country. I appreciate all his efforts and respect his patriotism with the hope that one day i will be able to join him for the movement of Free Tibet. I have been struggling here in Europe for 3 years of getting rejected for refugee status sometimes,i feel like giving up or ending my life because i’m tired of living this way but when i see people like Tenzing Tsundue it gives me motivation and hope that one day i will make it out of these tough times and be able to do something for my country without the fear of being arrested for being illegal.
