I was able to make it to Iola day 2 and see Derek in person. In the video he mentions doing an hour signing, but what you don’t see is him continuing to sign for every single person who waited in that line. His one hour signing was really over two hours. Absolutely incredible. He is just as friendly in person as in the videos.

The '61 Olds Dynamic was cool. A really rare 2-door post model. I believe it was the last year for either Buick or Olds B-body. 394 is a great engine. Even with just a 2-bbl. That car so needs to be rescued.

What gets me is the old guys who won't let anything go for any reasonable or unreasonable offer, like he is ever gonna get them all fixed up, just letting Mother Earth slowly reclaim them. Its one thing to save them to give to family for inheritance, but give it to them now, before they become useless scrap metal barely good enough to drag across the scales. Its their stuff, but it hurts to watch it return to dust.

On the other hand those cars have probably been sitting in these yards for decades and back when they were junked they were typical run of the mill everyday shite that no cared about. I haunted junkyards in the early 70's and this looks to be just like one of those yards. Filled with everyday vehicles common as grass in the front yard.

Yet some shops are like that were the customer can watch you work. I remember working at a sears auto center at night.with stairs to a waiting area inside the store. Yet some people had nothing better to do than watch. One night a lady needed her battery replaced and said she would be back in about 2hrs because she wanted to go shopping in the mall that we were a part of. So we pulled the car in the opposite side of the stairs so people could not see what were doing as the hood was up blocking us. So me and my buddy pulled over our tool carts and walked from the battery room with the new die-hard. Then we started banging on a muffler on the floor with the hand sledge making a horrible racket. Then grab a distributor cap with wires from the bottom of the tool carts and throw it into the next empty bay. Then we a impact gun and made a bunch of noise and threw out a water pump from under our used parts cannon on rollers. Made a bunch of other noise with stuff. Check the charging system again, shut the hood and drive out. The look at the few who stayed to watch was classic. Sometimes you wish you could unsee things. LoL I met marvelous Marvin Hagler for the second time their and he remembered me from the first. Like most malls in America it is now gone and a thing of the past sadly. Sometimes you have to spin wrenches with some expert engineer who would cross thread a light bulb looking over your shoulder. Lol

One of the main things I didnt like about being a mechanic, was when the customer would sneakily slide out into the shop, and stare at me working on their car. I would all the sudden turn into Mr. Butterfingers, and drop every nut, bolt, and tool I was using. 😂 Then here's Derek, working with hundreds of people staring. Doesn't even phase him. That is confidence folks. Makes for a great technician!

The flywheel not going on. I would have grabbed the biggest Tonya harding and got ro swinging. Derek.. nope. Made every person around him laugh during his frustration. Thank you for all you do. Thanks Derek ,for sharing yourself and your family, and being America's country mechanic. So many of us have been through dozens of cars, and walked many a weary mile, and learned from Hanes manuals and bloody knuckles. I usually toss the destructions after a glance, and assemble as I darn well please. Drives the wife crazy. Here's to greasy wrenches and rolling rust.

This is the end of the second episode on this build the floor of that car gave new meaning to the word. Fireblob or waldering through a pigsty. It's about three weeks since the first episode. That's about how long it took to get the dirt off your body. Looks like you wasted half a day at the junkyard. It'll be a miracle if you can get it ready by the end of the next day. So much junk so little time.

That's a '61 Olds Dynamic 88. Dad traded our '53 Olds Super 88 for one of those. It had an autronic eye, (Automatic headlight dimmer) just like the '53 did as well. Also our Dynamic 88 had a ribbon style speedometer. It changed colors (green, yellow, orange then red as your speed got into the 60-70 + MPH Ranges) Also had "speed-minder" you could set an alarm if you exceeded preset. Big boat of a car, but with it's 394, she ran good. Dig that deep dish steering wheel they had too!

32:16 I really hope they get that 1961 Olds Dynamic 88. I have a ‘64 Ninety Eight and it too was sitting in the woods for decades, driven by a little lady because the seat was all the way forward. The time capsule cars are so cool

@33:00 the sweet (or could have been) '61 2dr Olds Dynamic 88,, Emily says,, "I bet her name was Edith,," It very likely was either Edith or Joan. My step mom's name was Joan and she had a '58 Olds Super 88 Coupe' with more chrome than is seen on 30 cars of today. It was a beauty even back in the day when I first met Joan and her Olds in 1962. I loved the twice pipes with glass packs. There were a few times Joan allowed me (a 15 year old highschool Sophmore) start her Olds and rap the pipes for my buddies which made, Joan and her Olds pretty popular in my small circle of friends. 🙂

I love that! When Derek sent me inward for the pill bottle I had a fleeting thought ‘omg, when if the bottle says Edith on it’ 😳😝

One of the best episodes ever. All those vehicles have a personality and a story. Love when Flying Sparks Garage and Vice Grip Garage get together.

I was curious to see if Emily, in her new role as wandering on-the-scene reporter for the Iola Car Show and Swap Meet folks, would show up in your vid as she flitted hither-and-yon gathering action footage in place of the typical scheduled interview thing. She did, and y'all did. Very cool ^5 !

I'll tell you what! After watching a few laps of Cleetus and Kevin hot dog that Crown Vic around the freedom factory, because it was one car alone, hearing the tires go through that pain. It must really be a handful driving that track! I had no idea you guys were all pushing THAT hard in the corners!
