Preparing the Vintage Modified Race Car for my FIRST RACE! - Vice Grip Garage EP90

Күн бұрын

After contemplating for a bit, I decided to take my vintage modified race car, well racing. It's a battle-proven, champion car, built from a 1938 Chevrolet Master Delux Coupe that's still on the original frame. Of course, I don't want to ball it up, so what better way to feed her all the onions but not get in trouble than take it to a rally race! She's NOT built for this in any way shape or form - so this is going to be a MESSY BLAST!!

Left front brake shoes are on backwards Primary shoe goes on the headlight side not the brake light side.
@jessicacordova5024
@jessicacordova5024 4 жыл бұрын
The reason for switching the primary shoe and the secondary shoe is to increase front brake engagement. The reason primary and secondary shoes are different sizes on drum brakes is to decrease wheel lock by first engaging the primary (smaller less grippy shoe) first followed by the secondary (larger more grippy shoe). When the brakes are applied the piston of the wheel cylinder moves the primary shoe into contact with the brake drum. The rotation of the brake drum causes the primary shoe to be dragged in its forward rotation the forward rotation wedges the shoe into the drum and transfers to the secondary shoe. By switching the position of the primary and secondary shoe you’re making the secondary shoe (larger more grippy shoe) engage first followed by the primary (smaller less grippy shoe). By making the secondary shoe contact the drum first you’re increasing initial brake engagement to the front end. The goal is not to increase front braking bias it is just to increase initial brake engagement. Increasing front brake engagement helps on dirt track cars by using the front brakes to keep the rear tires in line when coming into corners and also has the advantage of being able to use your front brakes to straighten you out when your rear wheels break loose. Sorry if my explanation doesn’t make sense I’m not the best at explaining stuff it made sense in my head. lol hopefully it makes sense to those that are curious why the front brake shoes are (backwards).

@@jessicacordova5024 i dont think that would help it to stop. as far as them locking up it about fluid control, thats what you need one of them fancy valves for.
@jessicacordova5024
@jessicacordova5024 4 жыл бұрын
haydave420 I agree partially it’s not about stopping it’s just to have the front brakes lock or come close to locking fast to get the rear wheel in line with the fronts if the rear wheels are sliding out from under you. It kind a works like on an 18 wheeler if the trailers starting to get out of line you hard to medium brake the tractor to get it straight in line then slowly pull the trailer brakes and that’ll put the trailer back in line with the tractor. I am 100% not saying you have to agree with me or that I’m 100% right that’s just what I’ve always been taught maybe I’ve been taught wrong but it makes sense to me. But I could’ve been taught wrong that’s why I like to have these conversations because I honestly could be wrong because I’ve been taught wrong and you might know better than me and I might be able to learn something from you. That’s what life is about is learning from people that know more than you and teaching people stuff that you have learned.
@jessicacordova5024
@jessicacordova5024 4 жыл бұрын
haydave420 haydave420 also back then they did also use different valves to help with that but it wasn’t as common as it is now. Now people use different valves and can also tune these fancy computerized valves and change their braking bias instantly that’s what I meant by saying that with the old drums the goal wasn’t to change braking bias only to change initial brake engagement.

On a turn lefty track your not wanting to stop the car... your simply slowing it down and upsetting the stance.. if want the car to lean forward just a bit... turn left then transfer to the rear,,, it’s called wedge... think of a lawn mower with the right front wheel a bit lower than the rest of them... when you push the mower... it cuts more... and when you pull the handle it raises and put weight on the left rear.

Stagger up front, does two things. 1. It puts more weight on the taller tire 2. it raises the drinker side frame rail so the car maintains a flat attitude in the corner, reducing loose condition. This is really effective on straight axle setups.
@ludicrous7044
@ludicrous7044 Жыл бұрын
The front tires are aligned differently because of banking and it has “wedge” in the body and frame on the drinker side. The axle is offset as much as tech won’t see to help it turn left!! Down the straight it pulls hard to the left!! NASCAR won’t allow ANY offset and will measure it!!

A racer will be a racer I strap my children at 5 and 8 into racing go karts because they love it it’s a risk yes... technology has come a long ways but the karts run no cage no seat belt at 50 mph for kids! I’ve never raced! My oldest has aspergers. He is infatuated with racing and this is the only thing he can race. All I can say is once a car guy or racer you take risk. We get comfortable with modern creature comforts and forget how the people who created this nation explored and enjoyed life. The mayflower was in no way safe! I understand your concern but people take risk everyday because it gives them joy. I do appreciate your opinion

Looks to have a 5 on 5.5in pattern. So more than likely an old Jeep or International Dana 44. Ford used the same pattern as well I don't think they ever put a Dana 44 in the rear. They used Dana 44's as the front four-wheel drive axle though with the 5 on 5.5 pattern.

Using the left front to help the car set for the left hand turns. Then the back end kicks out and you turn into it and stand on it. The weight having transferred to the right rear. You don't want the rear tires to stay in line as stated above or the car will push, straight and usually into the wall. Dirt track is a different animal!! Dirt late Models are going into the turns at about 135mph. One pump of the gas and back on it!!
