Libya's Quiet War: The Tuareg of South Libya

Күн бұрын

In remote southwest Sahara, the indigenous Tuareg tribe - variously used and discriminated against by former strongman Muammar Qaddafi - fight for their place in a post-revolutionary Libya.
Living deep in Libya’s desert near large oil fields and lucrative smuggling routes, hundreds of miles from Libya’s capital, the Tuareg find themselves impoverished and isolated on this prized land.
Nowhere is this felt more than in the oasis town of Ubari. Here the Tuareg are pitted against former neighbors in a proxy battle for assets and power, backed by government and international interests.
VICE News travels to meet the Tuareg on the front lines of Ubari and the border town of Ghat, to find out what is really happening in this rarely visited land.

Right, its bc after these countries get rid of their dictators running the country, they can't agree on who should run the country now. So they split into diff gangs and just start murdering each other. This is why Africa will be a shit hole pretty much forever. The thing is that these 1st world countries could help African countries but when they do all the Africans want to do is try to kill the people trying to help them. These people are so Fucking stupid it makes me cringe.

man, those kids chasing after the truck always depresses me whenever I watch this. here I am, in the first world thinking my life is just the worst, and yet, those kids don't know any better but to be happy and play with their friends and brothers and sisters in the middle of war zone while they're young, only to most likely grow up to fight in the same conflict, manning the exact same fighting positions that their fathers, uncles, older brothers and their friends fought and died in. my life is a cake walk comparatively, I'm not a religious man, I just wish all of the Libyan people the best. may you find stability, safety and true freedom. y'all deserve all of those things, at the very least.

Tuaregs are the nation not tribe, who controlled once the caravan trade routes over the western african desert. When the French came to their land in the 19th century they were met by great resistence, because of this when the French left they devided their land between five countries as a reprisal of their resistence. Since then the Tuaregs have come into a difficult situation in all countrires where they live.

I love how the ignorant people here happily appropriate this "edgy" and "woke" opinion of Gadaffi being based. He was a dictator, perhaps not the worst, but he was a dictator. The Tuareg and other Berber rebels have every right to fight for what they deserve: support & recognition in their own land. Gadaffi oppressed these people and made sure that it was hard for them to fully enjoy their own culture and language in their OWN land. So yes, I understand these specific rebels' feelings completely. The critique should be towards the other Arab rebels who have once again, neglected the basic rights of the Berbers in their own land in a post-Gadaffi Libya.
@isaacb5968
@isaacb5968 4 жыл бұрын
At least Gadaffi created a sense of order, ruling with an iron fist. Now there’s dozens of power hungry maniacs profiting off of the instability that resulted in his demise, and the scale of human suffering in the region has increased dramatically. The exact same thing happened after the fall of Sadam’s regime in Iraq. The critique should really fall on the US for creating a power vacuum, and doing nothing to quell the resulting chaos. All we care about is controlling the oil fields.

Here’s the problem. Gadaffi may have been a dictator but England and France also had dictators it’s just they were called Kings and Queens to make them sound nicer. At least Gadaffi kept the country stable cause the only way to keep it that way was by ruling with an iron fist. Look at the state of the country now. Can you really tell me that an unstable country that’s divided by countless of factions trying to be the top dog to be able to rule over a broken country while innocent civilians are killed in the cross fire is better than a ruler who rules with and iron fist but at least there is order?

I find it interesting how conscious of the outside world these guys are. Like the way, talking about the person living in the tent, he said "it's the 21st century and someone is living like this." That's really interesting because in that area, everyone is living in run-down cinderblock houses at best. Even though he's probably never traveled more than 200 miles from home, he's aware of the kind of living conditions that people in the outside world are experiencing.

As a Libyan, who was born and has lived in Libya, who talks extensively to his Libyan parents about Libya, I can assure you that this chaos is the result and the reflection of a 40 year dictatorship under the Gaddafi Regime. Don't place him on a pedal stool. Do your research, don't just follow a trend.
@ahmedelmusrati956
@ahmedelmusrati956 3 жыл бұрын
@Leo Walzim 2 the problem with that is why did anyone have to be overthrown in the first place. If he was such a great figure, he would’ve helped Libya to be in a better position where they can look after themselves. Instead, he spent an enormous mount of money on himself and his people and WEAPONS. He deprived the Libyan people of their wealth for 40 years. And when everything brook loose, HE decided to take the first shot and allow weapons to be distributed to the masses. I’m not saying that Americans didn’t have a part in this, of course they did. Every global power has a part in this. Libya has become a playground for THE US, RUSSIA, TURKEY, QATAR, UAE, FRANCE etc. To run around and play. They are RAPING Libya and it’s resources, with the help of Libyan people militia groups and or “gov” or the so called “leaders” who know nothing but to steal and also deprive Libya from its own resources for their own personal gain. The Libyan people who are apart of this chaos have been easily been manipulated. And that is another direct result from 40 years of being manipulated. The thing that irritates me the most is that new generations are come into this world and will carry on the corruption and lack of understanding. And also most importantly, after all this, the only people who is suffering the most are the average man, woman or child. I’m not blind. I’m just not seeing the issue as a black or white. I’m seeing the enormous complexity of the topic.

Only France has interest in south of Libya , France behind this war , as France coloniesed Fezzan in 1945 after defeating German and Italian in Libya

@Tarek Ali: that's the most funny post about the role of France in WWII. How could it defeat Germans and Italians in Libya? It was DEFEATED by Germans alone even faster than Libya was defeated by NATO. Although lots of French resistance militants fought both Nazis and Germans, many of them fought against OFFICIAL French army of Vichy. Yep, many French took part in Allied operations, but it was not France - just numerous guerilla "resistance" forces.

@Tarek Ali: Italy has interest in south of Libya, the USA has interest in the south of Libya, Russia has interest in the south of Libya, France and many other countries. This whole "international community" being just the leaders of 1/6th of the world population wants to control the other 5/6th of the world. Many nations suffer from all the "peace" brought by these world financial sharks.

The words he spoke about the Col G --- are very true. The goings on to kill the Col ext ext was down to the West getting control of Libya plus the killing of the Great Leader himself. I worked in Libya for 12 years ---- I was most upset by what happened due to the West ----- I hoped to work for another 10 years or more if I had been wanted in Libya and my health had remained good before retirement . I was never happy in work before I went to Libya and I have never been happy since I had to leave. May God -Mohammed - the Col and All the Libyan People I met and worked with
