I watched this twice. Just to make sure I'm not mistaken. This is so negative. How about a little bit more praise for being himself. Yea he's not being negative they are talking strictly about melody and song structure and writing so maybe you don't understand fully , the formula is a pop music foundation , it's not about post malone or him being himself or unique , from a music point of view and composition point of view he is not doing anything different from a lot of other pop artists.

It is true tho. I mean Eminem is obviously talented, same thing with G-Eazy. MGk also has some dope tracks but think about it, Kendrick, Chance, and Big Sean don't get play on pop radio? I can understand artists like Joey Bada$$ and J.Cole who dodge the spotlight. The fact NF and Iggy get play is bullshit. Cardi and Drake are light-skin too so that makes this whole pop rap thing even worse.

The part talking about his race was unnecessary and filled with hate
@whaddup5417

Tyler the Creator disagrees with you as do many other artists. www.digitalmusicnews.com/2020/01/27/tyler-the-creator-grammy-urban-rap-n-word/ The part about race was not at all a critique of Post or his music. It was a critique of the Recording academy and Radio industry that controls what gets played. They can absolutely claim partial responsibility for his popularity as well as anyone who's ever been in the top 20. Their point was that categorizing certain artists as "pop" vs. "rap" immediately changes how many people are going to hear that artist and how much money they'll make. This video was about WHY he is popular. It doesn't matter how good a song is. If its played in the top 20, there were other reasons for its success. That's true for the Weeknd, Eminem, John Mayer or any other artist I've loved listening to. Are they biased based on race? Hard to say, but you could certainly make a case for it.

Vice is becoming so sad. Triggered because some white guy is successful in rap music. Now they gotta lower themselves to the level of haters. They have all these fancy ways to try and explain how his music is repetitive or simplistic in their opinion, but if it takes no talent to do what he does, then anyone can do it. If anyone can do it and be successful, then how come he's one of the few? Is there a lack of people in the world trying to make it as a musical artist? That i seriously doubt. Also, there's no reason to bring race into it. It has nothing to do with anything. People listening to him on the radio can't see his race. No one unfamiliar with him hears his song on the radio and says "I'm not sure if i like that song, i'll have to research the artist and see what race he is first" Music has always historically transcended race, thats one of the things thats great about it. Leave it to Vice, to try and create division by pointing out someone's race, like it even matters.
@jackward6726
@jackward6726 6 жыл бұрын
But THERE ARE tons of people making the exact same music. The top 40 is pretty much dominated by this simplistic shit. And don't say they're dissing him because he's a white rapper. Eminem was widely acclaimed in his better years whereas you don't hear any critical acclaim for post Malone despite the huge sales
@CortezBumf
@CortezBumf 6 жыл бұрын
I find it funny that you think Vice analyzing his music in all "these fancy ways" is some sort of backhanded insult to him as an artist. He formulated a style that incorporates repetition and simplicity in his music, and it works for him. Its not that serious lmao

@@CortezBumf Never said it was serious. Just another Vice video that seems pretty biased and misleading. I find it funny as well. Calling in experts to determine his music is repetitive and catchy. This is like calling in a scientist to tell me the sky is blue. If you've turned on a radio...like ever, you'd know music played on the radio is repetitive and catchy. It's not really anything groundbreaking. But here we are, watching a Vice video they made to specifically tell us that Post Malone is no big deal and nothing special. Makes you wonder why they even bothered to make a video on him.
@pixelcide6927
@pixelcide6927 6 жыл бұрын
@@jackward6726 yeah, you're right. They couldn't possibly be dissing him because he's a white rapper. I mean they did bring up his race in the video, i wonder what the importance of them doing that was? I mean this is just one of many videos that Vice does where they warn us about a musical artist that they don't think is good. I'm sure they'd have the same comments for other rappers that sound repetitive, irregardless of their race. They have lots of fair and balanced videos like Drake May Be Responsible For 5% Of Toronto’s $8.8b Tourism Economy (HBO) Wow, really. 5%? C'mon guys its gotta be more like 30%. Amiright?

Damn Vice, Really had to throw the race card in. How about this, He might not be talented vocally. But he is a genius because he was able to combine the "formula on his sleeve" and blow up. That's what almost every rapper wants, to be catchy and have their music listened to. Why don't other rappers just follow this formula? Maybe it's not as easy as it looks. Maybe, just maybe the radio plays him under *POP* him because he has songs that don't strictly talk about blowing peoples heads off. Maybe, the radio plays him because he doesn't spam the N word like a kid in a MW2 chat. Maybe, People like him because he's down to earth. Vice not everything is a racial issue, please don't divide people more. Pop is an area for catchy repetitiveness, Therefore, *BY YOUR DESCRIPTION OF HIM* Post fits it perfectly, Black, white, or any other race/gender/identification Thanks for making a divisive video, because that's what the world needs

TL:DR: It's catchy because he has basic song writing knowledge and writes the same song repeatedly. It's the same minor chord progression in two different keys with all the notes diatonic to the chord progression. He also uses every tween music trope and lyrics, Same formula Rihanna uses and it appeals to casual listeners.

Music isn't about how simple or complex the chord progressions or the songwriting are, it's about what you do with them. Some of the greatest songs ever were done with only 3 chords, hell, even 2 chords (Nirvana - something in the way for example). Also, Post Malone has a great singing voice so it's not like anyone can just follow that formula and achieve the same amount of success he did. You say it takes no real talent, except that's just stupid to say because if it took no talent everyone would be doing it if they could be as successful as he is with "no real talent".

Why do people keep trying to find reasons to hate and criticize this really sweet guy? I like Post. I relate to his music. Remember the first time you saw the White Iverson video?! I screamed and watched it again! When I went thru a serious break up this year, I had I Fall Apart, Blame It on Me, Stay and Better Now on repeat for weeks. Post comes to my city (Austin, TX) every year and I can not wait to meet him one day! We fuccs wit Post! What's better than standing up on a table or the stage in a strip club belting out Congratulations, White Iverson and throwing a stack?! Nothing! It felt great! Rock on Post!

Their arguments about Post Malone winning the popularity race by being average in everything and by having catchy and overly simplistic melody/lyrics are really invalid because none of it distinguish him from other 100s of garage bands. When I've heard his ''Psycho'' for the first time in the radio I immediately fell in love with his voice, it was instant and never happened to me before so as for me what makes him unique is his voice. All other things like catchy songs and nice personality are helpful but don't define his success IMHO.

This analysis is really quite shallow. Repetition is the mechanism by which groups of people can be swayed, not by Reason or justification, but blind submission to the established conditions. This is a classic example of the culture industry of late capitalism.

You say it is shallow but you agreed with it? Don't try to sound smart by discrediting something yo actually agree with. Being smart is acknowledging where things come from and not trying to"sound" smart. Anyone with real intelligence will see through the blinders you are trying to establish. An angry genius is a thing but it is just not you.
