Unfortunately I don’t have a good relationship with my dad. I was raised by my mom, aunt, and my Nana. My mom is a single mom. She takes care of me, my brothers, my nephews. She takes care of me with my chronic illnesses and physical disabilities along with working full time. My mom, aunt, and Nana are three of the strongest people! My Nana was a wonderful person! I miss her every day even though it’s been 21 years since she passed away.

Ive read somewhere people would be surprised how many black cowboys existed in the early west. The source i read said nearly half. I find this interesting. James P. Beckworth was a black frontiersman, one with an interesting history in California and Nevada.

Lots of people only know about cowboys through the westerns movies, movies produced during the 50's and 60's. Most of those movies not only show majority whites, but also very late times in the the westward expansion, many would be 1890's to 1910's. People came west for nearly 100 years and for a long time race and gender didn't matter.

"Cowboy" ain't a color, or a race, it's a lifestyle. We got Native cowboys in SouthDakota, there're Mexican Cowboys in Texas (& all thru the South) these kids are going to grow up with values and respect for people and life. Growing up on a ranch is the best thing that could've happened to me.

@1000TX research jb stetson the first american creator of the stetson cowboy hat that all cowboys wore in america, jb stetson said he got the idea to make a cowboy hat from the mexican vaqueros the sombrero created in the 1500s the first cowboys in america before white or black men even entered united states. The horse, cow, chicken, and all other cattle were brought by the spainards in the year 1492? I hope you know this but mexicans are spainards and the other half is native american indian? For a hundred years mexicans and native american indians roamed north america riding horses before white or black men ever entered america. Research vaqueros they are mexican cowboys from the 1500s white men came to america in 1609 and the first slaveship into america was in 1619 in jamestown. Texas all the way to california was owned by mexico. Blacks became cowboys after the civil war 1865 whites became cowboys after the american and mexican war which is when america won the war and came into texas were the mexicans taught white men to ride in 1830s. Then white men taught you blacks to ride to take the cattle from texas to oklahoma to sell cattle. Look at the date of those famous black cowboys ,it was after the civil war when they rode? There are no famous black cowboys who rode before 1865? Nat love, bass reeves?

Interesting point. This has nothing to do with the video but Marylands geography has always made me laugh. It’s so weirdly shaped that it looks like the state as a whole is just all the awkward scraps of land that other states around it didn’t want to claim. Anyways, black cowboy culture is hella interesting to me. All the old western movies only portrayed cowboys as white people but really it’s a lifestyle that goes beyond all racial and religious bullshit which is fucking awesome.

Glad to see this happening - please look up John Ware of Alberta, he was a US slave who made his way to Canada, Alberta, and became a ranch owner and cowboy. He was revered in the area for his skill with horses, and his strength. Several places are named after him - like the school my daughter went to, and there is John Ware Ridge. I have seen the comment that the term "cowboy" has racist origins, but that's not accurate. It was in use in the UK area long before people swarmed across North America - and it just referred to the boys who looked after the cows; like sheep-herders, shepherds, or a goose girl, and so on. Boy is not always racist, and it's demeaning to suggest that it is. "Our term cowboy was first documented in the English language by 1725, by Jonathan Swift. A direct translation of the Spanish word vaquero, one who manages cattle from horseback, cowboy has come to mean the same thing - a man employed to take care of grazing cattle on a ranch (OED). Vaquero, of course, is rooted in the word vaca, or cow, and stems from the Latin vacca. Another English word for cowboy, buckaroo, has a debatable etymology. It is generally attributed to an Anglicizing of vaquero, but, apparently, one scholar has suggested that it possibly stems from the Arabic bakara or bakhara, meaning heifer. Other terms include cowpoke, cowhand, and cowpuncher - all originating in the mid- to late-1800s. Regionally specific, cowboy is a term common throughout the west and particularly in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains, Buckaroo is used primarily in the Great Basin and California, and cowpuncher mostly in Texas and surrounding states, " Wiki.

I'm a student from Denmark and the history of USA is one of the big topics this time. We're told that cowboys were mainly black people and mexicans. It's cool to see one of the original families.
