Sex, Slavery, and Drugs in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the few Muslim nations where prostitution is legal, and the country’s largest brothel is called Daulatdia, where more than 1,500 women and girls sell sex to thousands of men every day.
Daulatdia is infamous for drug abuse and underage prostitution, and many of its sex workers are victims of sexual slavery who were trafficked into the area and sold to a pimp or a madam. They are forced to work off the fee that was paid for them, a debt that takes years to clear because they receive as little as a dollar for sex.
VICE News correspondent Tania Rashid visited the notorious Bangladeshi brothel - where human trafficking, underage prostitution, and drugs are commonplace - and met the traffickers and the trafficked, as well as the clientele.

This journalist is so brave, she puts herself right into the most dangerous of places where women are literally nothing but objects to be pawned and leached over. However she is determined to let the world see and hear these girls truths. In a world where they have no voice she becomes there’s. I think she is inspirational. She shows great compassion and care, down to her gently holding there hand to reassure them for at least in that small space of time they are with her, they are safe 😢

That's a bitter truth of this world. Who cares for humanity? That's exactly what happens when human relationships are weighed against money. Why can't these girls or even younger boys sometimes run away? Because the so called polished and well-off society yearns to keep them at bay thinking of them getting maligned because of proceeding to help them. It is practically difficult to survive in this world without a helping hand. And that is what these poor souls lack. And, then there are sadistic people who wouldn't like such institutions to stop working for their ulterior motives. The Government? Hahhhh. What is the meaning of this word? GOVERN ----- but what? Government (Definition) - A nexus of earning money immorally duping the world public in a clever way. Does any entity really want to stop it? Sadly, no!

Imagine being one of these girls in this situation. You were kidnapped here, detached from your close family, sold to an unknown person for business, have to sell sex multiple times a day to perverts, bonded to pay back loans, take drugs, take steroids to gain weight and look "better", and amidst all of this, you'll have to lie, smile and say that you like it. It's horrifying, and I desperately wish we could free these girls of their misery.

I suppose it is a typo of sub-culture that is ongoing, one abuses one who then goes on abusing another. I am sure if education, money and consistent laws would help however as one friend likes to say 'prostitution is the oldest profession'. In some ways we can at least be happy they get paid instead of being raped in caveman time. Biggest issue I see is men and the women they abuse keep this occupation alive. Wish there was a drug to just calm it all down instead of ramping it all up.

The woman claiming she came here on her own and is happy sounded like she was reading a script at gun point... I wonder how many times the "Madam" beat those words into her head and threatened to kill her and her family if she said anything different during that interview. So disgusting. It's videos like this that make me question our views on cultural relativism. At what point is "well it's there culture they can do what they want" still relevant? How can someone see the endless torment and helplessness of another person and say "Well, it's a domestic issue, they can deal with it on their own if they want to". Maybe I'm crazy but I can in no way think that and I think it's a complete cop out to think that way.

One of the most eye-opening and revealing parts of being in touch with your Bangladeshi identity is coming across these documentaries and having to learn about these issues from the internet because your parents only paint Bangladesh as a proud nation that gained its independence from Pakistan and nothing else. They will teach you the language and the culture and hand down the Bangladeshi pride over our mother tongue despite knowing everything about Daulatdia and Bangladesh's sex work industry but of course, this part of Bangladesh isn't as important as the rest...

Hello random strangers on the internet. Life went downhill. All hell broke loose. Trying hard to get a grip on myself and keep sane. Barely can survive and support myself. Couldn't do jackshit for anybody. Experiencing first hand the steep decline of the Institutions and the Society. And thinking that It might be better after all to immigrate to some developed nation. But.....Somewhere deep down.. There still lies that lingering flame of desire for improving lives of my fellow countrymen. May be the intensity is not what it once was. Yet the dream is still there. May be one day, I hope I can go chase after my dream. For now though, I am busy surviving.

brendon albrecht Yeah that's the problem..... Get real. She says at 13:15 that sex before marriage, drugs, and alcohol are all "strictly illegal" in Bangladesh. Therefore it is government that has created this brothel by its prohibitions. If there was no ban on drugs or prostitution, the brothels would start becoming more like legal brothels in Europe instead of these hellish creations of government policy.
