A Crime Unpunished: Bangladeshi Gang Rape

A recent UN report revealed that one in eight men in rural Bangladesh admit to having committed rape. Although it is a crime punishable by death, there are no accurate government figures for rape in Bangladesh, largely due to social stigma and a failure by local authorities to investigate alleged crimes.
VICE News correspondent Tania Rashid traveled to Sylhet and met with both perpetrators and victims of rape as well as local police to find out what is driving Bangladeshi men to rape and abuse women, and what steps the authorities are taking to put an end to it.

I made the mistake of mentioning that in a different comment thread and men told me that I deserved it and that it was my fault. Recently, someone said he missed shooting the wrong person. (He should have killed me.) Victim blaming is very real and it goes way deeper than any of us can imagine. By the way, I live in the US. It happened in Davenport, FL. I am a Bangladeshi woman and I constantly live in this fear of being raped. While I was watching the video, I sobbed bitterly. I felt the victim's words as my own voice, when she said,"Whenever you walk by, men might stop you on your way. It does not matter if you are old or young, they can take you hostage and rape you." Violence against women is the result of the cult of masculinity. Cultures that put all "honor" in the purity of "their" women - and keep women weak - are actually setting them up as targets. An insistence on "purity" is just the other side of the coin of insisting on sexually servicing the men. Dominant notions of masculinity in Bangladesh are linked to toughness, honor, sexual powers and dominance, which promote violence against women. The strong link between gender inequitable attitudes and perpetration of violence against women shows that violence is rooted in gender inequality and unequal power relations between men and women.Women are living in a hostile territory, where brutal attacks on women have become widespread. Thousands of beasts freely roam around the country to grope and molest women at will in public places. It takes a lot of force and pressure to get a complaint registered, even with witnesses. There is much else in our society’s attitude to women itself that needs attention. But if legal system does not act on the most basic violations, it is a free ride for men. The culprits feel that it is a natural order for them to be able to do what they want and get away with it.It is high time that we all ring the bell against all forms of discrimination to women.

Woman doesnt have to develop a victim mentality, because man amd woman arent two teams against each other, when woman are not ok man are not ok either, and the viceversa, because we need each other. The woman that spoke about her being raped mentioned that she was in a rikshaw with her husband on a way to a marriage, so she was neither walking alone at night, nor is it likely she wasn't dressed properly. Yet, her case has been dismissed. Whatever they do, there'll be no safety and no justice for these women. Just shame, blame, pain and trauma. All I can hope for is that as Bangladesh develops, that we get new rules and regulations and reforms in the law and order of this country, it's still developing, and men still are cunts, if you go to the cities like Dhaka, you'll know it's a mix of people, a majority of the youth have a mix of males and female friends. Alfonso Navarro As they mentioned in the video, it's much more common around Bangladeshi villages, and as of now, I know they're trying to get education to people where it counts, Because of the climate ordeal, it's had for people to travel to school for education, so what an NGO has done instead has made floating schools on boats, now that's the way forward, we just need to push out more around the country. So we are taking steps and our prime minister albiet a good lady or not, has taken steps to crackdown on violence against women in the UN and is going to put forward talks regionally in the SAARC summit coming up. Lets hope we can change. Change should be fast and furious but anything like so ends up being bad, so slow and steady is the way to go.
