Anti-Fascists Clash with Pegida Movement in Vienna: Hate in Europe

Founded in Germany in 2014, the far right, anti-Islamic movement Pegida has since spread throughout western Europe, with organizers planning demonstrations in Switzerland, Spain, and Belgium.
On February 2, the movement held a rally in Vienna, Austria, but was met with opposition from anti-fascist activists in the city center. Despite being separated by heavy police presence, tension between the two groups escalated.
VICE News went to the rally to find out what motivated Pegida supporters, as well as anti-Pegida demonstrators, to take to the streets.

In Austria this hatred has always been there. Politicians (ie HC Strache) are thriving off it. This whole debate is unbelievably stupid: Pegida: a bunch of right wing people which include a larger number of Neonazis and who support an ultra conservative and (by German Standards) Nationalistic world view. Even if some of their claims might have some truth in them, the broad majority of them are downright stupid when listend to. Antifa: One of the main anti fascist groups in german speaking countries who generally have the ideal of a peaceful multi cultural society, however their actions during protest sometimes differ from their worldview. Their stance on patriotism of any kind is usually quite critical as well. Muslims: Muslims believe in the teachings of Islam, which are based on christian and jewish beliefs mixed with preislamic oriental lore. Basic figures of christianity like God (Allah) or Jesus (Isa) are also featured in the Korran. In german speaking countries, muslims have been around in the form of turkish workers and their families for about 3 generations and the two cultures have more or less bonded to an extent, the "Döner" being one result of this shared culture. Nowadays most immigrating muslims come from the middle east as refugees after the US invaded iraq and caused a chain reaction of chaos throughout the region. Due to their culture, many midfle eastern refugees are hard to intigrate into society due to the huge differences in culture, making this a social issue missused politically by both left- and rightwingers for their agendas. It needs to be added that the large majority of muslims have no interest on spreading their Religion throughout Europe as many accuse them of. Salafists: Salafists are the bad eggs in the bunch. religiously hyperactive, they follow islamistic ideals to spread their religion. associations with the IS probably aren't that uncommon within their ranks. They are also from time to time ready to use violence to protect their "beliefs". Even though salafistic ideals are pretty unpopular throughout the muslim community, the antagonization of Islam by the public could lead to more salafistic recruitment. It has to be said however that there are under 10000 Salafists in german countries and only a few hundred are known to be violent. Also they don't even make up 0.1% of the muslim population so they aren't the threat they are often displayed as. My opinion: Both Pegida's and the Salafist's as well as the Antifa's ideologies could be dangerous to the society. Pegida makes topics like fascism, islamophobia or rascim more acceptable and this may not be, espescially in Austria and Germany. The Salafists have a dangerous ideology and in my opinion, they may leave the country and let society live in peace or be put in jail for the hatecrimes they commit. Antifa has a good vision, however they go overboard with a rather communistic ideology at times and the antipatriotic stance. Also, we can't let everyone into our country, it would be an economic and cultural disaster.

Pegida is just a European version of the American Tea Party movement.While it has some anti-immigration sentiment, it is actually pretty diverse (see the different European flags at 0:35) and its main message seems to be more anti-Islamic than anti-immigration. I disagree with them but the leftist propaganda isn't any better. Europe has a problem with Islam as an ideology and it needs to talk openly about it while preserving tolerance and civility. Pegida is just an expected response to decades of Islamist violence in Europe. Islam is not a race and it needs to adapt itself to Western standards of civilization or be prepared to face some criticism.
