He really does. Not to distract or anything, but check out the NPR Tiny Desk convert with Joey Alexander. It's amazing in general, but if you want to see a drummer who can absolutely get the most out of almost nothing, that's a perfect example. It's mind boggling the variety he gets out of a kick, snare, hihat and ride cymbal. And the group as a whole, when the magic really kicks in, it's unreal.

Most people never find a unique voice. This kid did it when he started talking.
@sinane.y5 жыл бұрын
His unique voice comes from emulating Chris Dave
@user-np2td3lg7t5 жыл бұрын
Sy Borg I think that’s kinda unfair to say. Sure Chris Dave is probably an influence of his but I don’t think that their playing is so similar that it’s justified to say he’s simply emulating him. When I listen to Chris I can tell that he played a lot of straight ahead jazz before he started doing more modern stuff. With JD I don’t really hear that so much, his playing is a lot more backbeat focused
@sinane.y5 жыл бұрын
@@user-np2td3lg7t I didn't mean it as an insult or to downplay his talent. The original comment made it sound like this kid has a unique style that came to him naturally, which is wrong. His roots can directly be traced back to Chris Dave, Questlove etc.
@yarpyarp854 жыл бұрын
@@sinane.y Ehhhh maybe a little, but there is still something wholely unique going on here. Not comparing him tony but u could have said that he just got his style from combining art, philly and roy but that wouldn't do him justice. This is some new shit.

I *knew* that I was hearing some Sput grooves mixed in there! It doesn't surprise me at all that he would be a mentor to this kid. He loves showing new talent the ways of the force. JD has taken all of that knowledge and turned it into something unique to him. He's going to be a monster drummer for years to come! Domi hails from another planet, too. I first saw her paired up with Louis Cole a few years ago and they had a similar fusion/funk thing going on that blew my mind. Louis Cole is also another amazing keyboard player and drummer, so when Domi came across JD, she was probably like "oh hell yeah, let's do this!". Thankfully there are a lot of videos of this duo now, but only a couple of them are high quality studio recordings like this one. Most are just people recording from their phones and whatnot, which is still better than nothing, but I'd love a high quality recording of these two doing a full set together.
