I was late to the party with RDR1, didnt play it until i was unemployed for a spell in 2018 aged 28. Later that year RDR2 was released. I bought it on release but didnt even get out of the prologue as i couldnt commit time to such a large game. For 2 years it languished on my shelf until 2020... when... i had a LOT more free time. Went from start to 90% completion and finishing the story mode within 2 weeks. I was pretty much sleeping, working or playing RDR2. Amazing game. Im 34, this was only 3.5 years ago but i feel like i have actual nostalgia for it already. My Arthur would wear red, had a bowler hat and a handlebar stash, so everyone elses cut scenes look wrong lol

I will never forget my first play though of RDR2. I must have spent 300 hours just looking at everything and exploring every inch of that map and the world. The only game that ever came that close to blowing my mind like that was Witcher 3. If a list was made of the 3 greatest games ever made, RDR2 and Witcher 3 are 100% on that list with Skyrim, GtA5, FO-NV, and Dishonored competing for the #3 slot.

There was a mod and rockstar removed it immediately which tells me they see some world where they release a VR version of this game. I played the mod briefly and let me say.... it was absolutely stunning seeing this world at scale like that. It truly feels like all the time and effort they put into every little detail was seen like never before. I was walking into rooms slowly and noticing every rip on the wallpaper, every trim on every window, every dust particle....truly insane potential. Here's to hoping it comes true

Growing up on the PS1 and PS2 i had never experienced a game that could defeat my nostalgia and RDR2 did that. This has to be top3 best games of all time for me. Growing up to me there could be no games better than the uncharted games, the warriors, bully, GTA San Andreas, def jam, crash bandicoot games, tekken games, mortal combat etc. RDR brought me back to gaming as an adult during the pandemic. I had played RDR1 when i was in high school but its not as replayable as RDR2.

I'm 38 and can say that I feel basically the same, just nearly. The previous Red Dead Redemption made me feel similarly, but after playing this one it truly pales in comparison, but only for natural and obvious reasons. Playing Baldur's Gate 1 and Fallout 1 when I was 12 years old were my moments of recognizing artistic genius for the first time at an elevated level, and I've revisited those games numerous times over the years awaiting anything that could even remotely compare. A few have come around, but Red Dead 2 is the greatest game ever made and that is a conclusion I've come to over and over again, multiple times. It just excels in nearly every major regard that matters, but especially the open world and the way it is designed to give an impression of absolute frontier style freedom that over time is revealed to be an ever-diminishing quality. Roaming around a staggeringly realistic realization of a period none of us are old enough to even vaguely recall is an opportunity hitherto unknown, not to the extent this game offers. The constant bombardment of gorgeous cinematography, remarkable music, ingeniously established characters and their highs and low delivered through a novelesque narrative the player gets to determine much of the pace of coupled with the design of the world and its environs sets this game apart with no equals. Games like Stalker, Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Morrowind, Baldur's Gate 2, the original Fallout or New Vegas, Cyberpunk 2077, are all games that I thoroughly enjoy playing and marvel at the artistic mastery involved in their creations. But only with Red Dead 2 and specifically as Arthur do I feel like I'm "living" another life, in another time. I'm not even very fond of Rockstar overall and I include the earlier periods when the minds ultimately responsible for this game were involved at the company in my opinion on it; Grand Theft Auto only ever appealed to me as spontaneous outbursts of senseless violence because I could never find myself caring enough about anybody or anything whatsoever to do with those games, and I've played them all starting with the original as a teenager. The last one I actually finished was San Andreas, and I could only stomach about half of the story of the last one before I gave up, despite several attempts at retrying. There whole gameplay design and creative philosophy just doesn't appeal to me very much, where even games like The Warriors and LA Noire I ultimately lost my enthusiasm early on for. And as wonderous as Red Dead Redemption is narratively, with one of the most memorable and gorgeous open worlds ever presented, the gamified nature of how you interact with everything does major harm in retrospect. Only with Red Dead 2 did they truly and absolutely deliver a genuine masterpiece from top to bottom, a landmark event in art history that will likely continue to reverberate for decades if not more, the way people today revere cinema or novels that defined not only a generation but altered the expectations people in general had on their respective mediums from then on. Despite being 5 years out now, I feel like we are on the whole still in something of an afterglow of sorts with this game, as nothing has approached it since but not enough time has gone by for the full impact of it to have been felt and established broadly. I revisit the game at least once per year after playing it the day it first came out on console; my last handful of play-throughs being on PC and occasionally on Steam Deck. It isn't even so much Arthur or John, or the fantastic narrative, or the points of interest that bring me back at this point, it is the sensation when reloading a game somewhere in Chapter 2 or 3 after not playing for a while and being immediately drowned in the overwhelming sounds of swirling cicada and bird song mingled with the movement of leather and buckles as my horse adjusts or swats at flies with its tail, a train rolling past out across the vast open Heartlands in the early morning hours, the distant snow capped and evergreen covered Grizzlies swimming in the shimmering haze of heat mirage distorting the entire horizon. The slow deliberateness to every movement Arthur makes, and the exceeding amount of visual and audible details surrounding you that seamlessly change with the territory, etc it is a profound triumph of human creativity the likes of which will almost certainly never be seen again, not in this form. The game is a once in a lifetime phenomenon, one that looking on from a distance in time seems almost impossible to believe could even have happened.

This game is not just a video game; it's a life lesson, in acceptance, integrity, in facing your own mortality and how you deal with it affects others around you. It implores you to experience the good man in a cruel world, or being a cruel man who follows the flow of the world around him. You can both play as BAD or GOOD man Arthur, and experience the consequences of your actions the way not all of us could have explored in real life. I bought RDR2 on Steam several years ago and it's just been sitting there in my Steam library. I finally started playing it last night. I'm taking it super slow and letting myself get immersed. It's definitely an extremely immersive game. Even activities as mundane as slowly walking around the Colter camp and making small talk with all the other gang members, and then spending a little bit of time with my horse; then sitting down in front of a fire, opening my satchel, and going through my inventory of stuff; etc. Even if you're doing things that are completely 'boring', it still sucks you in and makes you feel so invested in the experience.

If you think stuff is immersive now, wait until Chapter 2. IMO it's when stuff really starts out, and is the best chapter of the game in the sense that everyone is happy and healthy. There's a lot more freedom with hunting, going to town, and the like. Have fun

When I returned to play the game for the second time - I took it incredibly slow - like a person having a near death experience and then returning to his everyday life with a new found appreciation for the little things, the small things, the extraordinary things that are all around us - keep it up and take it slow 😇

I remember starting playing it in the winter holidays when snow was falling outside. And that how the game started. I was in awe from that moment to this day. Rockstar so beautifully handled diverse characters in every way in that era which it is set in, woven into the the story that no other can even touch.

RDR2 was Rockstar’s BEST WORK. I don’t know if they’ll ever be able to top this game. The story, characters and all of the details are what made this game so special. All of the choices we were given ended with some type of consequence that affect the story and dialogue. They put so much into Arthur Morgan, as complex as he was he grew on the players and we ended up loving his character.

I consider RD2 the Mona Lisa of games . That the only way I can look at it . Nothing is perfect is this world . But this has been the closest thing to perfect game I have ever played in my 43 years of life . The controls had me put off at first but then I realized it’s kinda like real life .. and movement really matters . I had no issues after that . For a year and a half I been trying to find something to play that’s close . I just haven’t found anything .😅

For many media, (TV and such) there are some movies that defy the genre norms, but in such a way that it almost makes it seem like a masterpiece. Examples would be Breaking Bad for television, The Dark Knight for superhero movies, The Truman Show for Jim Carrey movies, Prisoner of Azkaban for Fantasy, and you can throw in Game Of Thrones books in there too for literature. For Video Games, I believe RDR2 to fit in the pantheon of media that is different: that takes the tropes we are used to, and flips them on their head, and a story that conveys some complex messages, even if put on TV. The themes of changing times fits so well: and the fact that everything, down to the map getting more civilized the more East you go, to even the gun selection, with the Schofields, Henry leverguns, Springfield trapdoors, and Single Action armies, guns associated with the western outlaw, being seen aside Browning Auto 5s, Krag Jorgensens, Carcano Rifles, and the two German Semi auto handguns, weapons associated with the early 20th century outlaw. Its all very nice

I think one of the BEST things Rockstar did with this character is give him a journal for us to read. Because we may have our own thoughts on how things transpired but so does Arthur and it makes you look at events differently

I remember descending the mountain during the Mountain Hymn part of the prologue and thinking to myself "This game is going to hit differently and I need to take my time with it." I got so used to Los Santos from GtaV that eventually I just turned off the map and got from place to place by memory and I decided that I would explore this new world completely blind. It all culminated in my ride back to Shady Belle after Guarma and I was able to get myself back home after dozens of hours just riding around and exploring the world. The sheer immersion and connection I felt to the game was such a unique experience for me

This was one of my first completed games entering the gaming world and everything else pales in comparison emotionally. I'm on maybe my 10th playthrough now and entering chapter 6 already has me dreading my tears that will ultimately ensue. It's so beautifully tragic and striking. I want to do everything I can to keep Arthur alive in game. I live vicariously through him and connect my real life experiences to his. It's not just a game to me, but a life lesson, and almost reliving a past experience I'm nostalgic of as if I once lived back in 1899.

I had avoided RDR 2 back when in launched. Like a lot of ppl I was intimidated with its challenging and hard mechanics, long storyline also the fact that this was the most spec demanding game back then. Years passed by and I started seeing videos on YT and decided to finally play it in 2023 november. I literally took a day off cause I couldnt close the game, it was so interesting (even the long rides. Every character is memorable and fleshed out. Rockstar really outdid themselves with this one. In the end all I could say is that the ending with the sunrise with "Crash of worlds" playing in the background was the most powerful scene in all of gaming history. I literally cried like lost someone fr.

I haven’t finished the video yet but I wanted to say something. First off, amazing video. It’s very well put together and very interesting. Second, if you haven’t took the time to read Arthur’s journal, you’re missing out. It helps you connect further with Arthur as a character and gain insights on to what he thinks about things. It made it have a bigger impact on me whenever his story came to an end. Take the time to read the journal right before Arthur’s last mission.

Not that it is nessessary but i find myself really enjoying watching 310 to yuma after a big red dead session. There are little similarities even though they are vastly different stories. Just makes for a nice pairing. The main guy outlaw likes to draw and doodle in his journal like arthur. It features pinkertons, there is a guy like dutch who fancies dual wielding schofields. An indian guy that uses a rollingblock rifle very often. There is the building of railway crews that show up. And like arthur the main outlaw guy also has conflicting morals. Although not to the same extent and is far more lets say low honor for most of the time after all its only two hours versus 60 like this game lol but the ending shows a real different way of valuing whats important to him so its like a mini redemption arc as well sort of. Anyways i think its one of the better modern westerns and pairs really nice to this game.
