Vickers Viscount flight from Northolt to Le Bourget 1990

In 1950 the World's first commercial air passenger service flight by a Turbine Powered Airliner, was launched when a Vickers Viscount flew from London-Northolt to Le Bourget Paris. Forty years after the event and knowing that Viscounts would not be flying for much longer, The Friends of Viscount Stephen Piercey and British Air Ferries, set out to re-fly the route on the 29th of July in 1990.
The passengers left from The Control Tower at Brooklands and were taken by vintage Bus to Northolt, before flying over Brooklands and on to Paris. The aircraft was parked in the same spot as the original Viscount had been and the passengers toured the world famous Musée de l'air et de l'espace. This was followed by lunch, before flying home.

I remember so well as a child watching 'Channel Airways' Viscounts at Hurn start up and take off; it was a lovely sound!

Great to see once again a Viscount 800 and at Northolt as well. I worked Viscounts on BEA Flights LHR for 14 years then much later worked for Fields on 32RAF Squadron at Northolt.

I only went in one Viscount and that was from Johannesburg to Salisbury, (Rhodesia) on Air Rhodesia in Oct 1976. Sadly it was at night so didn't see much. But you are quite right, lovely and smooth - and you gotta love those large windows!

I was only 5 to 7 years of age in the late 60s early 70s when I was at Victoria and Vancouver airports where I saw many Viscount aircraft where they served for Air Canada. It was the first turboprop I ever saw. I could never forget the cool sound of the RR turbine engines a sound I didnt hear again until I saw these videos on you tube.

I flew in a British Air Ferry Viscount in 1989 and on a ex-TAA Viscount Mandala Viscount from Sumatra to Jakarta in Indonesia in 1990. Both great experiences.

@dianebarqs Hi Diane! Just noticed your post, and had to say hi. My Dad was a Viscount Captain for Capital. His name was Lynn P. Griffith, and he was based in New Orleans until the merger. He stayed on the Viscount until '64, when he moved to the 727, based in New York. I loved that sound as well, though it was much more pleasant from the inside! I also loved the huge windows. We were lucky kids.

why dont any viscounts fly anymore? no more spare parts? too outdated? I know it wasnt built in the same numbers as the dc 3 but its still flying and its like 30 years older than the viscount

it is fella, I flew in many, the Viscount is king, and I dunno why there is none left flying in the UK, only 44 built, smaller numbers than DC-3, maybe some in the African bush - we need to bring one home - they sound awesome and so smooth.

someone should look to restoring some and use it as a special regional airliner. id pay for a ticket just to ride in one!
