Vickers Viscounts during 1993 on their last scheduled passenger flights, from Southend to the Channel Islands.
G-AOYN, G-AOYR and G-APEY are seen, as well as the first appearance of G-BFZL ( not on a passenger service) in British World Airlines 'leaping lion' colours.
VHS-C recording with linear mono sound.

That noise reminds me so much of standing on the roof of Cardiff-Wales airport for hours with my dad watching them taking off and landing. Fantastic

Thank you so much for this superb nostalgic footage. A wonderful aeroplane the Viscount, I saw these on the production line at Weybridge in I think, 1954. I believe we sold more of these throughout the world than any other airliner. Thanks again

Robertcharlessceats -a total of 444 Viscounts were built including freighters, The largest post war civil aircraft built in UK was the Short Skyvan/330/360 with 496 The highest volume was the Brittan Norman Islanders but these were not treated as "commercial airliners " Other volume aircraft were the BAE 146 with 394 built , Avro HS 748 with 382 built and BAC 1-11 with 244 built

I treasure that sweet moment as a six year old passenger, in December 1966, when I sat beside this aircraft's huge windows.

I was lucky enough to have a flight on G-APEY at the Lydd airshow just weeks before it retired. I was in my early teens at the time and still remember being amazed at how big the windows were on the Viscount.

My very first flight was on an Air Canada "Viscount" in January, 1967 from Moncton (YQM) to Toronto (YYZ) and a week later back to Moncton (YQM) aboard an Air Canada "Vanguard". From that point in my life, I was "hooked on flying". Upon graduation from high school in June of 1967, I moved from my home province of Nova Scotia to Quebec where I went to work at Air Canada's Dorval Base in Montreal (YUL). As a filing clerk, this was my first full time paying job at the age of 17. Although maintenance for Air Canada's fleet of 51 "Viscount" aircraft was carried out at their Winnipeg (YWG) base, quite often we would have one of these aircraft in our hanger for less routine maintenance or servicing. Over the years, I've never forgotten my very first flight aboard the "Viscount" and in the years to follow right up until 1974 when the "Viscount" was finally "retired" from Air Canada's fleet, I was always very happy to be a passenger aboard one of these outstanding aircraft.

My 1st and only flight in a Viscount was during Easter of 1962 from Toronto to Montreal with TCA (Trans Canada Airlines) which later became Air Canada. I was only 5 years old but still well remember as it was my very 1st flight in my life. Thank you! The engine sounds really brought back many memories. We lived on the flight path of (then) Malton airport near Toronto and these would fly low over our home daily.

My first flight on a BEA Viscounr, was a short, but memorable hop from Liverpool to Belfast, at age 10. At age 15, I flew in a TCA Vanguard from Fort William (now Thunder Bay) to Montreal, also a memorable journey. Thanks for posting this trip down memory lane!

I sure remember those screaming props from the early 60s well into the 70s with Air Canada. I flew on those Viscounts on many shot hauls and on the Vangaurds from Halifax Canada to Bermuda at 18,000 feet. Lots of power, those Vangaurds.

My mom took us to the airport to see our grandparents take off for BC in 1970. I remember that the door had been green on the interior, and I've seen clips that show the interior of the Viscount to be green. Would a flight from YQG to YVR in 1970 likely be in a Viscount?
@markcuming8769

Not likely to go from Windsor Ontario to Vancouver BC in a Viscount. If it was on a prop plane, it probably was a Vanguard and there may have been a stop over in Calgary.

Mark Cuming notice the LUMP cockpit ? It shows on quite a few BRITISH planes, I first saw them on the DH Dove, DH HERON, those I saw in 1972 doing tourist flights in MAUI Hawaii.

It seem that with the Viscount and the Rolls Royce Dart Engines, you hear the sound of the jet engines more than the sound of the props. On the turboprop aircraft that I've seen n real life, such as the De Haviland Dash 8, I've heard the sound of the props a lot more, making the "box fan" sound in high idle and taxiing, and buzzing like the wings of a flying insect during takeoff and in flight.
@AccessAir
@AccessAir 6 жыл бұрын
Each airplane that is powered by a Rolls Royce Dart makes completely different sounds on takeoff. It has that I have seen, a lot to do with the Mark of the engine but also the mere shape of the propellers. Different propeller tips make a difference in sound on takeoff and in flight. Even taxiing, the harmonics of just how the engines are mounted and exhaust laid out can make the Darts sound different from one model type to the next. You have to go beyond the loud screaming to hear all the other sounds the RR Darts make. There is a difference.

This clip takes me back 50 years. Whenever we were passing I used to nag Mum to let me look at the planes. I also remember attending the air displays at the airport. Greats fun. I’m convinced a saw some people not wearing HiViz jackets in this clip. How could that be? Did nobody tell them that they could be attacked by crocodiles? Or catch fire?
