There is actually a really good reason why the mk.12 spr and other m16/m4 based marksman platforms are still issued with the full auto trigger sear and that is because the trigger pull is much more consistent then the burst trigger sear. And when going for a precision platform trigger consistency is crucial.
@4THRespawn5 жыл бұрын
@Michael Srite That's not what he means. He's talking about the difference in trigger pull between a weapon running a burst sear and an automatic sear while both are in semi. I've never gotten to use a burst fire weapon. But from people who have, I've been told that auto has a smoother pull in semi versus a burst weapon in semi.

Great vid as usual LAV. I absolutely love the MK12 platform. I would really like to see it issued army wide for SDMs over the EBR. The 14 platform and 7.62 are great unless you're the guy carrying it. The SPR was issued in full auto as during development Crane had been given M16 A1 recievers to dispose of and they decided since the spr has a heavy barrel anyways it could be used as a light support weapon if absolutely needed. The full length stock was used as the collapsing M4 stock and shorter carbine length recoil system caused bolt bounce issues on full auto. that went away with the rifle length system. However as most guys knew they wouldnt use full auto the stock was often switched to a collapsing m4 system once it got to units.

whats the difference between a sniper rifle and a DMR? Or at least the main differences, what defines them..
@TheMetalHeaD2569 жыл бұрын
So a sniper rifle, in the American sense of the word, is a rifle used by the shooter in a two-man team, separate from their squad and platoon. They take shots closer to 800-1000 meters today. The Russian definition of sniper is our definition for DMR. The Russians armed a designated marksman on the platoon level, to sit back in the trench, or do Recce-overwatch, not more than 500 meters behind the main infantry force. So, shorter range, more rate-of-fire, less precision and calculation needed for DMRs and their optics.
@heynando9 жыл бұрын
TheMetalHeaD256 Gotcha. Pretty good explanation. Thanks!
@Mr12ob6 жыл бұрын
In simple terms DMR's are semi automatic Sniper support systems such as the M110, Mk11, Mk12, SVD, M1A, etc. DMR's are usually issued to the best shooter in an infantry squad. A Sniper rifle is issued to trained Snipers. Sniper rifles are usually bolt action rifles such as the M24 or USMC M40,M2010, AI-.338s etc, but Snipers may choose a semi automatic rifle such as the M110 or M107.
@mrhellotherehowareu13846 жыл бұрын
I like Metal Head's explanation but I want to add in that everyone wishes they could be a sniper. It's usually a gruesome training program that you have to be selected for. I recall a Navy SEAL instructor once said that their sniper program is one of the most sought after role and a lot of people don't make it. Whereas a DMR is usually someone picked out by the CO to be put into a couple of weeks training course and they're cycled back into the squad as a DMR. Usually the best shooter of the squad/platoon will be selected for DMR training and they're given a very basic run down of how to shoot and measure range. However, that is not always the case. Sometimes just some random person is selected for DMR and it's nearly impossible to fail the course unless you just don't show up or something.

Does anyone know if the 77gr stuff is used on all missions? I imagine at 600 yards, the M855 would lose a lot of energy and wouldn't be a fatal hit. As a thought, I wonder if the M193 is a better out to 300 yards but I imagine beyond that it would suffer significantly, even if you could hit your target.

I know some guys run the red dot on top after replacing the ring, but what are your thoughts about offset 45 degree sights or 45 degree red dots? The offset seems like it could lend itself to maintaining a cheek hold, even coming up from a sul position (versus low ready) with the rifle.
@trashpanda3149 жыл бұрын
After running both, I recommend the 45 degree angle offset. You can put the mount between the 2 scope ring mounts. Larue makes a bad ass offset mount for micro dots or T1s. The big advantage to that is not having to lift your head or change position to acquire targets, you simply turn the rifle a bit while still maintaining your cheek weld and eyes on target.
@Noble_Titus9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Derek. I was on a stalk and had a buck pop out in front of me at about 35-45 yards and my 1-4 scope would've taken about half a second to get on target. I had never even cared for offset sights or anything like it before that moment. After running through the moment a few more times in my head, it certainly FELT like something on the offset would've been faster and I am glad to hear from someone who has tried both.

Perhaps some unique systems could be adopted for special scopes on this gun. Ones that has a drone triangulation with a spotter and gunner in a real time targeting systems. I would imagine that this could make the difference in saving ammo in many cases, to say the least. The drone alone will make an enemy think about changing position and put a fire under their ass. We'll find some good uses for plastics, yet. The drones will be so easy to learn that kids can become experts at least with the drone tech. and help to pay for the project. It's what I would call a win win win situation here. Get the boys at skunk works hammering this out. It would even help a General get a birds eye on real time combat.

Do you use your SGL-31 for CQB and that is the reason you put a reddot on it? Because i always thought and im not talking about real life experience that the reddot is not verry good for human target size ranges over 200 metres because the target is to small and would dissapear behind the red dot... what are you thoughts about it?
@grenmoyo39688 жыл бұрын
i think you mean "butt-stock"? The US army seems to not have too huge an issue engaging targets with the aimpoint compM2 at distances of 300-400m, Is it as good as a 4x optic like trijicon for that role? no. But thats why squad DMRs like this "sniper" with his Mk12 (I quote that because thats not really a sniper rifle, its more fills the DMR role.) exist which is good for targets at 400-800m with a variable optic like a 4-12 or something. I would never use my gun past 50m much less 400m.

Isn't the Mk.12 just a glorified M16 with a heavy barrel and match ammo? Even though it's "accurized" and all, why wouldn't you still opt for a 30 round mag over 20? It's not an AR-10.
@truebornsonofliberty5549 жыл бұрын
Easier to go prone, for longer periods of time with a shorter mag
@TheMetalHeaD2569 жыл бұрын
I like the SAM-R, the Marine Corps version of the Mk. 12 a little better. Reason being, its barrel actually has a slightly different chambering, called the SAM-R chamber. It's tighter than 5.56 NATO, but it's not quite the .223 Wylde. More accurate chamber, probably specified for Mk. 262 ammo.

@jessesimmons92388 жыл бұрын
Gren Moyo it's not about making them look like civilians rifles it's to give the 5.56mm NATO better performance. A 5.56 NATO performs like a .22LR when fired through a 10 inch commando barrel. If you have a 16.5 inch barrel it can be used effectively from house to house fighting to long range sniping.
