Victim of romance scam cheated out of $75,000 after meeting the "perfect guy" online

She was hesitant to look for love online but decided to give it a chance. The Maryland woman ended up getting scammed out of her life savings by the first man she met on a popular dating app.

I'm actually talking to a scammer right now on POF :) God, it's insanely easy to pick them out. They all follow the scam basic scripts, they can't type in normal, correct English (ie "Athens, Ohio" vs. "Ohio Athens"), and they think everyone can stomach bad romantic poetry.

You're right ! That's how I feel too. My husband died 3 years ago, I sold our home & moved to a smaller place, bought it, & put the rest in the bank. The only ones getting my money are my 2 sons & 3 grandchildren. And that's only if I want to give it. I'm an old woman, retired now & certainly not going to fall for someone & send money to someone I've never met.

Online dating can be difficult for the uninitiated. Some basic rules to avoid time wasters and scammers: 1. If there is any reason for a meeting in person to be some way off such as the person being in a far flung part of the world, walk away. 2. If a meeting in person doesn’t happen soon after starting conversation, it probably never will. I think that two refusals/excuses is a good rule of thumb. 3. When chatting online don’t get overly emotionally drawn in. Just talk about the kind of person you are and what you’re looking for - and then either meet in person or not. 4. See “online dating” as a phrase, not a reality. Actual dating only happens in person - and if that isn’t happening, stop contact.
