Disraeli definitely had politics in mind when it came to middle class readers. The middle classes were overwhelmingly Whig/Liberal voters at the time and would remain so until the Second Reform Act in 1867. At the same time, the factory owners were overwhelmingly Whig/Liberal supporters, so the portrayal of the shopkeepers and the wives was more than likely accurate, but also done to have a go at the Whigs/Liberals. It is a pity that there aren’t more thesis novels. I think it’s down to what you say about TikTok videos being more effective or seen as more these days.

I'll be fair and say that cinema killed it off first: there are plenty of "thesis films"!
