Aww Poppy loves Victober too!! She's so cute. Hope you have an excellent time with all of the buddy reads you've lined up! I really enjoyed Dorothy Wordsworth's journal when I read it last year. It's a very interesting glimpse into historical daily life

Sounds like you've got a great October planned! I loved the story of Tess of the D'Urbervilles and I thought Mayor of Casterbridge was good, but I'm not a fan of Thomas Hardy's writing. I don't know if I'll have time to get to The Trumpet-Major or not, but we'll see. The only Victober book I have planned for sure is Wuthering Heights.
@novelideeaАй бұрын
I am reading it to support Tiffany or I would have never picked it up! Maybe it'll be fab and I'll regret not giving Hardy more chances, but he was 3 strikes for me.

@@novelideea Just curious, which books have you read by him?

@@Coffee_and_a_Book Tess, Jude, Madding. Madding I liked the best, but it still made me angry.
@Coffee_and_a_BookАй бұрын
@@novelideea Tess I liked. From what I understand, his point was to show the ridiculousness of the double standard we see in the novel. Madding is really the only other book by him I've considered reading.

I haven't read Wilkie Collins in years but I remember preferring The Moonstone to Woman In White, so I will be interested to hear more about his other books. Three Men on the Bummel should be fun, I will have to get to that one day.
@novelideeaАй бұрын
I think I liked the Moonstone more when I was younger, but my reread of it found me yawning - - a lot! Woman in White was a ride. I had such a great time. I could figure out a lot of the stuff that was coming, but there were a couple things that still surprised me, and his writing was emotive and easy to find the rhythm of.

You might enjoy To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis as a fun follow-up to Three Men in a Boat.

My main October plan is The Scorpio Races, which I do every October. And I'm going to read the cozy mystery that Em from EmsBooksAreEverywhere announced a readalong for. Maybe I'll finish my reread of Crime and Punishment, but who knows. And I'll probably be listening to some romance and/or mysteries with my sister.

I need more time in-between reading of Scorpio Races - but I love that you have this tradition! Which Cozy mystery is it? I have one cozy planned but I am hoping for more of them!
@CourtneyReadsАй бұрын
@novelideea if I love a book, I can read it back to back. In fact, I may end up doing that with this this year. I've read it five or six times in a year before 😁 Chaos at the Lazy Bones Bookshop. I'll probably listen with my sister.

@@awebofstories One of these years I’ll commit to all the prompts/ group read. 😂 I read The Professor last Victober. I hope you enjoy it more. I’ll probably pick up a Holmes for Alice also, I just don’t know which one as yet. 🥹

@@novelideea I know this sounds crazy, but I'm not actually expecting to enjoy The Professor. I read it way back in college and didn't really like it then. However, I have been re-reading the non-Jane Eyre Charlotte Brontë books this year in prep for a Brontë event I'm planning for March. I figure the worst case scenario is that The Professor will be just what I expect, so we'll see!

I’ve never heard of _The Trumpet-Major._ I liked _Tess_ but haven’t seen fit to try Hardy since. His bleakness seems akin to punishment. Dorothy Wordsworth’s name comes up but I know little about her or the relationship with her brother - so you’ve got me curious.
@novelideeaАй бұрын
I hadn't heard of it either, and I didn't vote for it 🤣🤣 I didn't love Tess. Nor Jude. Kinda liked Madding. All those were for classes and once I wasn't being made to read him, I have stayed far far away😁 I'm very much looking forward to Grasmere Journals.
