Regular contributor Victor Davis Hanson joins John to take stock of the many political, social and economic flashpoints currently occurring around the globe. He assesses the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, pans the management of the US economy that has seen inflation soar, and unpacks his most recent book, 'The Dying Citizen', arguing that identity politics, big government, open borders and internationalism, among other factors, are eroding American citizenship and security.
Victor Davis Hanson is an American classicist, military historian, columnist, and farmer. He has been a commentator on contemporary politics for the National Review and The Washington Times and is currently the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.
In addition to writing hundreds of articles, book reviews and newspaper editorials, Hanson is also the author of twenty-four books and hosts a regular podcast series, 'The Victor Davis Hanson Show'. Hanson was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2007 by President George W. Bush, and was a presidential appointee in 2007-08 on the American Battle Monuments Commission. His latest book, The Dying Citizen, was published in October 2021.

This was 1 yr ago. It seems Putin is winning. He is decimating Ukraine with thousands of innocent deaths. Thousands of dead young Russian men also. What'll be of all this invasion and war??? The US is being demolished under this administration. I think all started falling apart under the senile Biden administration and all the bad destructive decisions he made.

I have admired Mr. Hanson for years now. I highly recommend his most recent book. It is not an easy read. Be prepared to study it carefully, take it in strides, and do not gloss over terms or situations which do not easily appear in your range of view. His message is critical to our survival as a nation as well as the world around us. I know of no other knowledgeable man with such a breadth of information at his disposal who yet chooses to present all that he delineates with such calm clarity and objectivity. He has an awareness of so many points of view that it's uncanny. Most of the time we encounter a man with a fount of knowledge who is all too eager to tell you which direction to take and that his conclusion is the best or most accurate one to adopt. Mr. Hanson is different. He is a true teacher. He is not a savior. He provides readers and thinkers with multiple senses of awareness and merely hopes that people make choices wisely.

Hanson's knowledge and wisdom are always impressive. He has this special capacity for discovering hints in the popular culture - empirical evidence - that support his intuitive analysis. The bit about the stereotypical russian villain in Hollywood movies, and the way by which the chinese were able to profit from the woke agenda, are great examples. His noticing also of the subtle shift in posture by China is something that the vast majority of pundits have not taken notice of.

What an extraordinary session with Victor Davis Hanson. So much wisdom and insight, informed by history which we continue to ignore - we don't teach it, we don't refer to it, and consequently we don't learn from it... so we repeat it. I just wish, as an Australian that John Anderson would run again for Federal Parliament. This country desperately needs people of calibre who can bring civil, intelligent, wise and experienced dialogue to debate on policy, on the future of democracy and the direction Australia needs to go in. Ukraine has woken the conscience of the world but I wonder, as Niall Ferguson said in another interview with John Anderson, will the West's 'attention deficit disorder' kick in and in three months from now we've moved on from Ukraine and the lessons there, will Germany ramp up its spending on NATO. The West has weakened itself and Conservatism has become a dirty word. Not a good outlook. But thank you John Anderson for flying the flag. These interviews as so valuable.

Another outstanding session from two learned professionals. My greatest fear is that the failure of the public school system to educate students about civics will become our undoing. I am encouraged that the refugees entering the country have experience with what doesn't work and know the difference along with parents getting involved with education and pushing back on the hateful indoctrination and propaganda that is being taught.
@suesquez
@suesquez 2 жыл бұрын
A valid fear. And your being encouraged should be tempered with the chilling fact that the Obiden administration abruptly halted the flow of immigrants and refugees from Cuba and Venezuela (because those people know first hand the painful failings of Socialism and were seeking to escape it), while continuing to encourage the flow of what they perceive to be next generation of Socialist "voters" from other central and south American countries. The first group wants to come here to escape the yoke of totalitarianism, the second wants to come here for free stuff.

Great Book from Mr. Hanson so far. One example of eroding divide between resident and citizen in Australia is the constant clammering by New Zealand citizens for benefits and welfare. We have a special relationship Kiwis and Australians but barriers should be removed towards citizenship for Kiwis instead of the clawing for benefits. One example is the opening of student loans to NZ citizens. The nest arrangement for Australia is that Kiwis come and work and live in peace but for those who's Australian dream does not pan out the Australian government is not responsible for propping them up with welfare.

Putin said that he would start a ware if: Ukraine joined NATO (was invited in June 2021) and if negotiations stopped (in late 2021 Ukraine withdraw from negotiations). However, this time of the year is the worst (mud in all forms). Russia will probably take the eastern part of Ukraine. EU will have a food scare as much of the food comes from Russia or Ukraine. People in Africa can not afford food and start to starve... yeas its a perfect storm. Please take notes: NATO will only defend members that can defend themselves. The USA has a MONROE DOCTRINE! Does anyone remember the Cuban Missile Crisis? Do you remember how you murdered Allende in Chile (1973)? How did you change governments in Guatemala (1954), Bolivia (1971), and Nicaragua (1990)? The size of Ukraine is similar to France, so it takes at least one week for the tanks to arrive.The campaign goes very well. The USA and the EU are funding neonazi groups in Ukraine, like the Right Sector. The Americans demand Putin accept a NATO Ukraine with nuclear missiles that can reach Moscow in a few minutes. Usual American propaganda. It's a DISGRACE to hear HANSON saying all this nonsense.

@@kingpriapatius5832 What a bunch of nonsense. Were you handed that on a piece of paper or do you have it ready to copy and paste? I love it when people try to legitimize actions by pointing to the actions of others. There's a difference between 2022 and the midst of the Cold War, and the Monroe Doctrine had to do with every European country in 1823. That's 200 years in case you have problems with math. Is there a "Putin Doctrine" that says not even Ukraine's neighbors are allowed to send them weapons to defend themselves? Poland and Hungary aren't allowed to get involved? Boris Johnson is one of the biggest critics of Russia and the UK isn't part of the EU anymore.
