"In my 31 years of training in martial arts and 11 years as a Navy SEAL Sniper, I've never seen a faster handgun disarm in my life! Don't think for a minute that this type of disarm is just for show. As an operator, I can tell you that speed and accuracy keep you alive..."
Randy Kelley,
SEAL Team 5, Point Man, Sniper
CEO, Red Tail Corporation
San Diego, CA
Amazing life changing documentary film of hope, released Spring 2012. Born to an absentee father who was a pimp and a drug dealer; who didn't claim him as his own child, Victor Marx was left for dead in a cooler by a child molester at the age of 5 in the deep South. By the time he was a teenager, Victor endured abuse from several step-fathers, attended 14 different schools and lived in 17 different houses. He was doing drugs in an effort to escape the emotional pain of his childhood. As an adult, Victor was diagnosed with mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder. It seemed as if there was no way out. He could have chosen to remain a victim. Instead, he learned what it means to become victorious.
Victor Marx travels the world as founder and President of All Things Possible, a national faith- based organization. Using his expertise as a 7th Degree Black Belt in Keichu-Do - a mixture of Karate and Jiu-Jitsu - and a 5th Degree in Weapons, Victor engages audiences of all types, delivering a powerful message of hope and restoration.

Mr Marx is a good man and a great martial artist. He has overcome so many things in his life to put himself in a position to help others with his ministry. Anytime someone comes through the fire and has it within themselves to help others who have been in the same bad places, they are a person to be respected. The fact that he is Christian has no bearing on that respect from me nor should it be from any others. Coming from a Heathen that lives from PTSD, keep up the great work, the world needs more people like you.

Depending on where you live, you may have limited options. Ask around, sit in on a few classes, and make sure that the lead instructor makes the style of martial arts fun for the kids. If your daughter isn't looking forward to going to class & not having fun, it won't matter the style of instruction. I started with karate & then mastered my father's style Keichu-do (karate, boxing, & jujitsu). Finding a karate instructor who is a Christian is another positive that I would search for too :-)

Victor, I heard you interviewed in the morning just before you spoke in Hawaii at the HIM convention that I couldn't attend. You said, "Don't run from the cross. Run to it." I immediately wrote a song with those lyrics. Three weeks or so later, my pastor showed your biography in church and I wept because I could relate to much of your statements. I thank God for you, my brother! Love, In Him, Jonathan Nosaka. Grace Christian Community Church, Honolulu, Hawaii.

I love got fight scenes, especially when they are this tactical. To be honest I didn't expect too much here, but this was great, it kept me watching. My favorite part was the bullet catching and punch afterwards. Funnily this scene felt like it was way longer than 3 minutes. Again, great scene. A+, 5/5.

Nice vid and technique. To the keyboard warriors who say this is stupid to try, I say it's only stupid to try if you don't believe the guy with a gun in your face will shoot you. To the ones who say this is easy, I say that it is not easy, you have to be very fast and also lucky enough that the gunman isn't expecting it (luring him into a false sense of control by appearing submissive helps). I personally train to start a disarm with my hands up as if I'm pleading for mercy which also brings them closer to the gun. To the guys saying this won't help if the gunman is farther away you're correct, you have to either distract them, hope that they lower the weapon momentarily or point it away so you have time to either close the distance to disarm or find cover or escape. I thought the vid was cool and liked the humor, and obviously this wasn't a serious demonstration of what you should do in an encounter like this. For those who don't know why this was more for entertainment than for practical demo: 1. Don't dare an attacker to use the deadly weapon with bravado statements like, "Are you sure you want to do that? (Well punk, are ya??)" The joke of "I don't think you want the lady" would have probably been effective in reframing the encounter enough to momentarily unbalance the thugs. During their moments of bewilderment "who the heck is this guy?" thoughts, that would've been a good time to disarm them. Daring them to pull the trigger seems ballsy but just increases the tension and the chance that they will shoot. 2. Once you disarm and possess the weapon, in a closed space where neither of the parties involved can retreat, your best bet is to point it at them and be ready to pull the trigger if they don't immediately comply with your commands to step back, hands up, etc. Especially considering they may have another gun (the other thug was unarmed in the video, may not be in a real-world scenario), use the gun to defend yourself as necessary until the threat is over either by your escaping or the bad guys being incapacitated on the floor. In an elevator you don't have the luxury of escaping until the door opens, if I'm in that situation with two guys who pulled a gun on me and I managed to disarm them they are likely to be full of lead before I can leave the elevator. 3. Finally, after you have subdued the attackers one way or another, call 911 (duh) and don't leave the weapon in the trash where bad guys or a child could pick it up and use it. Anyhoo, thanks for posting the vid and two thumbs up on the disarm and fighting techniques in the video, very entertaining and you obviously know what you're doing. Well done.

Simple really. Action always beats reaction. Of course he's remarkably good at this but anyone with some minimal training can disarm the quickest and fastest armed robber if they are close enough. That's the key. I found from training that my mistake was not stepping into the bad guy and dominating their arm. Honestly try this with a training gun and you'll see there is no way in hell to react or pull the trigger before the gun is taken from you. And if you were going to die anyway... Practice firing a pistol with your hand carefully on the slide because it may fire once, then fail to feed. Twist it from their hand breaking their fingers, tap, rack BANG over. You're not going to out draw someone like this. So this technique is actually worth practicing even for average people. I was actually surprised how strong I was doing this and the same speed that makes my draw and shooting sub second is the same speed that allows my first burst of movement to beat them. And if you can go to their outside you can avoid tussling with them.

You don't snatch the gun from the assailant without moving the other way when its pointed straight to your body and the trigger in all possibility could be pressed while snatching, bottom line a bullet moves faster than your hand

Of course he was sending his wife a code immediately when he said to the bald guy...... "I don't think you want the lady".......... Since they were having a slight disagreement they were both waiting for the assailants to escalate the attack. If Victor hadn't said anything the bald guy may have waited longer to pull out his gun. Pulling the gun was what Victor was waiting for. The sooner the gun is out the sooner Victor can end the assault. Maybe he and his wife had worked out a few codes years in advance in case they ever got into a confrontation with someone............but Victor's point was to distract the assailant long enough for the assailant to give Victor the advantage he needed. As long as the gun is in the assailants waistband Victor can't reach it. As soon as it was pulled out Victor had the advantage...................it's just that the assailant didn't know it yet. (8^)

I have learned over the years that everyone needs a friendly ear, I can walk through the plant that I maintain and feel the respect that they have for me because it is mutual I am a firm believer in the philosophy of paying it forward, often out of work I will help them out with advice or transport without bothering about reward, I pride myself in the fact that although I don't go to church every Sunday I am at heart a real christian.

I, too am a Christian and also a minister. I will agree with you that as Christians, we are told to "turn the other cheek," but there comes a time when one must defend themselves and incidentally, almost all martial artists are taught to flee from a fight if possible but if the need arises, we must defend ourselves, but only with the most minimal harm to the aggressor. Here additional force was necessary or they would have lost their lives. They were perfectly justified in their actions as martial artists.

Shooting the pistol at all in the elevator would be a bad idea- no hearing protection + enclosed space = permanent damage. What's on the other side of the elevator wall? The wall beyond that? How far will the bullet travel? WHAT ELSE COULD IT HIT? Situational awareness is the first thing to achieve (or be maintained).

***** He is also a Marine, and therefore trained to kill...so I doubt he'd have a moral dilemma with it...he just chooses to use his skills in a positive way for the greater good. As far as my comment, it is a fact that even a skilled fighter will usually lose a fight with a weapon. If you are lucky enough to get the weapon, use it to your advantage and escape the situation as fast as possible (if you don't kill him and his buddy, they may have another gun or knife or more friends). If you've ever been in a real streetfight or mugging, you would know that the capability for complex thought goes out the window and you are reduced to your most primitive fight or flight reflexes. That is why I train the way I do and why I have that mindset. Friend, I too am a Christian and will always turn the other cheek unless I am in a situation that directly involves the safety of myself or others. As we are taught by his teachings to be selfless, I'd gladly give up my ticket to heaven if it means my children will still have a father, my wife will still have a husband, and those evildoers won't ever be able to harm anybody else. I think as men of faith, we should all train and prepare mentally and physically to defend what is right and do what is necessary to protect our selves and families when (not if) the time comes.

If someone is threatening my life, and, even more importantly, the life of the woman I love, I will take all measures necessary to eliminate the threat they pose. If that means firing one bullet in each of their skulls, or stabbing them with their own knife if that's what they have, so be it. Also, lots of christians kill people, in the army and otherwise. Just thought I'd add that.

They went all the way around the block. This is not real time action, it was depicted in a story. Stop hyper focusing on the things that don't matter and pay attention to the things that do. >.

I wish I could have that kinda of confidence, that kind of husband, the ladys hair, that action music. In real life unless you are a black belt who s gonna fight two guys in an elevator?

Karate is for kids. The best self defense is just that, "Defensive". Judo and other forms of S.D. makes Karate look stupid. You would be surprised at how easy it is to make a very large angry man cry and do anything you tell him to without you even breaking a sweat.

Stupid comment. Grappling is great for 1 on 1's but no matter how good you are you still only have 2 arms 2 legs. Kicks can't be used in an elevator. Fists are the most reliable weapon and Karate has the best approach for punches which is one strike mentality unlike boxing which is focused on combinations.

Wyatt Ostrem As one who has taken martial arts for a bit, I wouldn't say karate is for kids. It definitely can be useful to anyone who is proficiently trained in such, but I will agree there are more proficient arts out there. I took Taekwondo, Hapkido, some Krav Maga, and a little bit of Brazilian Jui-Jitsuo. Probably the most street effective of those would be Krav Maga. TKD provides you with the kicks and punches, while Hapkido gives you the joint locks, chokes, holds, submissions, and such. But Krav Maga is really probably the BEST street defense art out there.

I love this scene but dropping the magazine is not what I would do( of course I am not a Martial Arts expert) would keep this guys at bay until I could call the police and they arrived and yes if the perps advanced toward me I would shoot them in self defense!

The punks would lawyer up, and eventually get out of jail without learning a lesson. The beat down will make them think twice in the future before robbing someone.
