Had a chance to meet him a few years back, despite his talent he is somehow still humble. I remember him asking if any of us played music other than my buddies, who he knows and recorded a couple tracks with (this is why I was able to meet him). My girlfriend called me out. “He plays a little guitar”. I was frozen, couldn’t believe she put me on the spot. I corrected her. “I make a little noise”. Victor replied seriously, “it’s all music man, and that’s all that matters.” Such a cool person

In the early nineties I was at the NAMM. (National Association of Music Merchants - trade show for the manufacturers of any thing music) and my buddy and I are on the lower level where the smaller companies had booths. We come across this guy and even standing just three or four fett from him it was difficult to comprehend what he was doing. For years my friend and I talked about him as this mythical bassist that we once saw. As if he were Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. Years later when he became more famous people remembered us telling them about how he had a hair tie around the neck and the mythical God-like player became real.

I'm a guitar player and I went to one of his clinics. He's the nicest person I've ever met and the most informative. He has enormous patience and a good heart. He feels every note from goods soul. I'm a better guitar player from watching and listening to him. He gave the best advice of my career. "You're never more than a half step away from a 'right' note" God bless you Victor.

I saw Victor play a 2-man show with Bela fleck a few weeks ago in New York. There were no other musicians. They didn't need them. They were having so much fun. The played a couple of songs in 11/16 time which they said was difficult, but you couldn't tell. although they played together in Bela fleck and the Flecktones, they had never played as a duo. Unreal.

Victor has been banned from 7 galaxies for redefining physics with his thumb. His bass clef shaped spaceship crash landed into what is now the Yucatan peninsula creating the Chicxulub crater. Some 66 million years later his spirit emerged from the depths of the ocean and materialized in human form as the most funky creature to ever exist. If we make first contact with alien life-forms it will be to return victor to his home among the stars where he usually uses the power of his bass to alter the gravity around black holes for intergalactic space travel.

Victor's a real innovator of double-thumb / pluck, where as Les is more oriented towards combining down-thumbing and flamenco strumming. The above clip could be imitated by many people without knowing what they're actually doing, where as Victor has a complete grasp of the palette he's working with.

I am a guitarist. Not bass but 6 string. I have been blown away by guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray, .Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, etc. but even though I am not a bassist, bass players like Victor, Les Claypool, and Jaco Pastorius blow me away even more so. I guess it's because I can't believe they can stretch across those large frets and fret those huge strings as easily as I do with the much smaller fretboard and strings of a regular guitar, and they can do it as fast and in some cases faster than a lead guitarist.
