Made by The National Film Board 1948. Directed by Jack S Allan. Open cut mining in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, produces tonnes of low grade brown coal that is burnt, unprocessed, in the Yallourn Power Station, which in 1948, supplied 66% of Victoria's electricity. The high moisture content of unprocessed brown coal makes it a less efficient and higher carbon dioxide producing coal. Yallourn Power Station today produces 22% of Victoria's power supply and 8% of the national market.
