Quick oversimplified pronunciation guide: Put a line after every vowel and then pronounce each syllable. Ie: Sho-yo or Ta-na-ka. That and vowels are basically always pronounced the same so: Shoh-yoh or Tah-nah-kah.

I started watching Haikyuu at the beginning of quarantine right, when my last high school gymnastics season was cancelled. This show made me sob because I understood that "feeling" every athlete gets when they're at their peak. I could also understood the challenges that Asahi faces when faced with a skill he couldn't get right multiple times, or like hinata's stomach aches before the game. I love this show so much! It's well written and I feel like athletes should watch it.

I did competitive swimming in high school, however, I tended to skip lengths during practice because I hated being worn out so seeing a character like Kenma and see that he could overcome that feeling would’ve really benefitted me the past four years but I didn’t start watching Haikyuu until I had graduated high school and started my first semester of online learning for college

When Noya tells Shoyo that, "after we're done I'll treat you to a popsicle" that's a trope in anime (and maybe japan in general) that a kind senior schoolmate treats their juniors to popsicles, and it means he was really moved, flattered that Shoyo would treat him with respect. Some tips about cultural things you might miss out on in the anime! It’s said when someone is talking about you you sneeze, so you might notice that happening in the show! The whole upperclassmen thing is actually a bad translation really, or well it’s just a really direct translation. Senpai is the word they are using in Japanese and while it does mean someone older than you in a school or work setting, it also is a term of respect. So calling Tanaka or Nishinoya senpai (upperclassmen in the sub) is a term of respect and they feel proud of it. It doesn’t get communicated properly in this version of the sub. This one isn’t really to do with the culture just about the Ace. They aren’t necessarily the best player, just the most reliable striker/hitter. In the show it’s said it’s usually the left wing spiker. By reliable they mostly mean the spiker who can score even when facing a three person block whether that be through power, or tactics.

ik this is way late but upperclassman is essentially the correct translation, its the closest word for it in english. im korean n i believe its similar to the word 선배 (sunbae), but western countries dont rly have that kind of culture (as in titles based on age) so 'upperclassman' or 'elder' is close enough! it can be difficult for westerners to grasp, but basically older=more respect=title of respect.

@@des9969 no I totally agree just in America upperclassman isn’t really about respect or used to refer to someone you are talking directly too so I feel like it’s better when they just use the work English is after all a language that takes from many other languages we use tons of words from other languages so just learning the depth of senpai or sunbae is better and makes it sound a bit better a lot of shows and translated manga just use the word I was just trying to explain the depth a bit because it is a little confusing for a new (English speaking) viewer of things like anime

Noya is LOUD most of the time but you will see how focused and encouraging he is during a game or when he has a hard time to recieve something he gets quiet hypes up himself and makes sure *the team knows he is there for them* you will absolutely love him

Yuji Nishida is incredible, right? I love his crazy flying leaps and angled spikes. I've just started watching videos of the Japanese national team. All of the players are great. It's hard to stop watching Nishida because he's so flashy, but the others are amazing as well. Watch their libero sometime, or their setter! :) Brazil is really cool too!
