The Picture of Dorian Gray is my favorite book ever. I'm reading it for the fourth time now and I always find something new (:

I was planning on reading Jane Eyre in October anyways but this makes it more fun :) I read Wuthering Heights a few months ago and I loved it.

So excited to learn you'll be joining the hosting team of Victober! :) Last year the readathon was on at the same time as the majority of my reading for a Victorian Childhoods module I was doing at uni, so it was a brilliant way to motivate me! I'm hoping to have just as good of an experience this time around, even without uni to go alongside it. I hope you have a brilliant Victober Lucy! :)

Although it wasn't written during the Victorian period, "The French Lieutenant's Woman" by John Fowles gives a lot of insight into the period.

I’m always SO impressed by people who read English literature when it’s not their first language! I don’t think I could do it in another language. So well done you!! I hope you enjoy Wuthering Heights!

I'm so excited for you to be hosting a readathon that you love! I loved the Picture of Dorian Gray film and I've always wanted to read the book so this will encourage me to pick it up! I've always been interested in Tess of the d'Urbervilles since my English teacher recommended it to me a few years ago and I live in Hardy's county! I tried to read Withering Heights last year and struggled to get through the first few chapters but I might try it again!

I loved Cranford - it was SUCH a heart-warming read. As for Tess of D'Ubervilles, I always found it a bit intimidating because of the subject matter (I am too sensitive for my own good, so it sometimes makes me physically ill to read about people who had some injustice done to them). That said, the way you described it made me want to give it a try, so maybe I will (although probably not during the Victober, I already have a TBR in place).

+Lisa Witcher Yesss Wuthering Heights is a great choice! I really hope you like it. Remember: keep going with it if you don't understand it, because the narrative can be a little confusing at first. But eventually all will become clear!

I'm so excited to join in this year! It's going to be my first time! I'm currently reading Wives and Daughters and will probably include it in my Victober TBR. I would recommend Middlemarch but it's a big book and took me almost a month to finish so I would recommend Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte.

This sounds like such a fun challenge! I studied Victorian Lit in college and haven't read much since. I was so pleased to see some of my favorite books on your list! Tess of the d'Urvervilles is one of my all time favorites -- it's so heartbreaking. Cranford is my ultimate comfort read. I haven't read Dorian Grey in years, but I adore Oscar Wilde. I think I'm going to participate and refresh my memory of these books. I work with classics at my job and certainly have access to the books! I might start with Jane Eyre 😄

Once September hit I grabbed a bunch of mysteries/thrillers and Gothic and Victorian literature off my shelves and made a Fall TBR! Now, I feel like I'm in a way participating in Victober. My Fall TBR (in no particular order) is: The Little Friend by Donna Tartt Emma by Jane Austen (I have a goal this year to read all of Austen's novels in publication order.) Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix by J.K. Rolling (This is also part of my goal this year to completely read the HP series (for the first time!).) Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy The Woman In White by Wilkie Collins House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski Dracula by Bram Stoker (which I have already finished and loved) The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson Of the ones you mention that I haven't already addressed- The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favorite books. I have Cranford but have not read it, yet. I have read Jane Eyre and like it but I think it's kind of an overrated classic. I really want to read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall!

I am genuinely excited about "Victober." Victorian literature is by far my favorite fictional genre. I recently completed "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" by Anne Bronte and a biography on the Bronte family entitled "The Bronte Sisters: The Brief Lives of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne" by Catherine Reef. I'm also currently reading "Jane Eyre." I haven't read any of Elizabeth Gaskell's works yet.Perhaps I'll try reading one for October. Who is your favorite Bronte sister? Thanks Lucy.

After the furore surrounding Jude the Obscure, Hardy wrote no more novels & concentrated on writing poetry. How do you feel about this paradigm shift & its cause? IMHO the 19thC is one of the glorious periods in lit. generally, the others being the classical Greeks & Romans, & the British 1575 to 1660. VicLit is untranslated & nearer to our own time than the other lit. eras I mentioned, both of which helps current readers understand it better.

I wish there was a list of example books for each challenge or just a masterlist of some victorian books in general because I'd love to join in but I'm unsure of any books to fit these to be honest.
