Preparing For a Pet Sitter

Since I'll be going on vacation I figured I'd show you how I prepare for my pet sitter to come and look after my 7 pets! If you plan to have pets and want to ever go on vacation it's crucial that you have a friend, family member, neighbour or some sort of pet sitter who can come in and look after them while you are away.

I'm on vacay for 3 weeks. My mom luckily is the one caring for my hamster, rabbits, and dogs. I have a security camera in my room so I can see how my babies are doing and it's been a huge relief to see them happy and well everyday. 🥰

I remember when I was younger my neighbors had a rabbit that they pretty much neglected in their backyard in a hutch. I felt really bad for it so they told me I could take care of her. I would go in their backyard and feed her veggies, clean out her litter box etc. Once they even handed me a nail clipper and I clipper her nails on their trampoline 😅 they ended up giving the rabbit to a new home.

My family travels a lot so we have to find lots of pet sitters. Because of this I ended up making a whole pet booklet because I was tired of making new instructions everytime. I included the care instructions for our chickens, dog, and my hamster (who has the most detailed instructions) as well as our emergency vet's, both my parents, and my number. I always feel so anxious leaving my hamster though because she can be so reckless! She lives in a bin cage (thanks to you Victoria 😁) but whatever I do I can't stop her from monkey-barring at the top and chewing on the plastic. I can't lower the bedding because then she can't burrow, I've tried many boredom breakers but none last the night, she has lots of sprays, but she is obsessed with climbing! She falls a lot and I'm afraid she'll hurt herself.

Wow, you're so considerate! I'm a pet sitter these days, and all of these things you've done are SUPER HELPFUL. I like to interview with the pets and their owners before accepting (to make sure the pets like me). I go over their routine and where things are kept -- garbage, cleaning supplies, food, etc. The WiFi password is usually a high priority for me 😅 I take notes. Most owners write out instructions for me too. They're always embarrassed about how much information they give me, but it's totally fine. More is better! Contact information -- emergency numbers, where the owner is staying, medications for pets, etc. All helpful things. I'm always happy to take pictures and send them to the owners while they're away. Peace of mind is priceless.

Hey Vic! I am so happy that I found your channel even though I don’t have a hamster😂 I have 3 lovely mice but am planning on getting a hamster later on! Your channel actually helps me with my mice too. You are such a lovely pet owner and I’m sure your pets have absolutely awesome lives❤ I bet your pet sitter will be so thankful for everything you’ve done! I agree with you, don’t leave your pet (in my case hamster) alone for more than one night. When I left for Christmas 2021 everything was perfect. I got my Benny two weeks before and he was still a little afraid of me, so I thought he definitely wouldn’t miss me. I gave extra food, made sure everything was fine and I left … when I came back…😳 his entire bottom and belly was wet and even bloody. I was so scared. The emergency vet diagnosed him with wet tails disease. It was an absolute nightmare. We are very lucky that Benny is still alive today. But if i would have been home the evening before, even just 10 minutes to feed him, I would have seen him en known something was very wrong. He still would have been sick, but with wettails every hour counts. And he probably wouldn’t have needed the aggressive treatment and a scary stay at the clinic. After that I never left any of my hamsters alone, not even for one night.

Hi! I doubt that you will see this but if you do then just know that I love your videos and you have changed my hamster care and many others too. I now make my own hamster food and have a larger cage. Before your videos my hamster Noodle would have about 2 or 3 inches of bedding and not a good variety of food. I have several animals and my dad doesn't travel so I have alot more pets there then at my mom's it's also very stressful leaving but when I do go I have a camera and check on it every hour and if something is wrong then I'll call somebody to go make sure that my pets are OK!

Hey, I doubt that you’ll ever see this but I just want to thanks you so much Victoria. I’ve owned hamsters since I was 6 but in 2020 during lockdown I found out that my care was very wrong. I started reaserching a ton more on my hamster care and eventually saved up enough money for a 1200 sq inch enclosure and 12 inches of bedding. I learned how to bond with munchie (the hammy) and turned out he was my ❤pet! He was so so cuddly and loved spending time with me. I would free roam him every other night and he even knew some tricks! He would quite often sit on my desk and fall asleep during online learning and my class loved to see him on zoom calls. (I even educated some of my teachers and classmates on hamster care!) he would come up onto my bed and sit on my lap watching Netflix. Sadly he’s away up to see Lenny now (he used to love watching him on my phone). Thanks so much for making munchies life so magical and I know with time my new baby Syrian hammy Jaffa will have just as magical of a life. Thank you so much ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

My dad will actually be pet siting for me when me, my brother and my mom are on vacation! He lives with me, but he never goes with us since he has work and he doesn’t want to! I will be writing notes on how to care for my hamster I will be going in the summer, but so far we haven’t needed to take coco to the vet’s luckily so we don’t exactly know what vets we have to go to! Question: can hamsters go to a regular vet or do they need to go to a different type of vet? I will show him how to spot clean and other stuff he does watch your videos from time to time he doesn’t really understand, as he only knows swedish, Kurdish and a bit of Arabic. But I do help him with understanding like translating it in Swedish or Kurdish since I dont know Arabic! Thank you for teaching me about hamsters so I can understand how to take care of my hamster, Coco! If it wasn’t for you, Coco would be living in a small cage with pretty much 0 enrichment,a small wheel, a bad food diet, be wasting money on bedding from cleaning out the whole cage every week! Immm soo exited I’m getting my dream natural set up hamster cage my mum finally agreed I all ready had a tank the right size and all the essentials but I wanted it to be better and my wheel was horrible so iv ordered all the natural good stuff for a hamster cage that’s all bc of u bc u taught me how to look after a hamster.
