The Swiss are half jokingly looked upon in German speaking countries (i.e. Germany and Austria) as the slowest people on earth. It's true to a point but it's because they do everything precisely and perfectly. If you've ever been to Switzerland you'll see how everything is relaxed and slow paced, but perfect.

@@simonh6371 lol that’s not true at all. I worked in Switzerland for years and they are so fast paced that it’s insane. And I come from Milan, Italy, which is more caothic than New York from my experience. Swiss take their time on projects, but the lifestyle is sooooo fast paced it’s insane. Everyone runs their car over speed limits all the time. There speeding tickets are norms from day to day.

Agree 1000%. The scissors only open about 1/2”… if you can get them open at all. They’re so stiff to deploy it’s ridiculous and frankly I’m shocked that Victorinox, who does such a high level of quality on everything else, thinks the scissors are acceptable. And of course no amount of oil helps. I always assumed it was just my scissors were unusually stiff until this video.

I have both the Leatherman Charge and the Victorinox MX Clip. When it comes to nails, I actually think that the Leatherman Charge has little tools that are harder to get out. What I really like about the Victorinox is that it's much more streamlined and thinner than the Leatherman Charge which makes it way more friendly to the pocket. I also really like that there will never be any concern for rust with the Victorinox. However, the tollerances on the Leatherman plier pivot are tighter.

I know this is an old video, Dom. But at 17:09 you mention that it annoys you that the version without the clip is the same price. That's true, but in return you get a sheath with it. So it's exactly the same value, as the sheath is sold for the same price as a clip separately :D

As someone whose fingernails are so thin, fragile, and prone to splitting, I totally sympathize with your deployment problems with the Vics. For me, it is even worse on the SAKs because more of the tools are even harder to get at. I have actually (albeit rarely) resulted to using another tool to pry, say, the awl up far enough to grasp rather than risk the pain of a nail tearing into the quick. Oil and exercise of each tool can help a bit, but it would really be nice if Victorinox would take pity on the keratin-challenged among us and loosen up. I will be looking for that video on adjustment.

@Craig As for opening the tools on SAK´s you could use the hook part on the toothpick for pulling the nailnick. It works quite good in my opinion. If you want to see a video about how to do it Felix Immler has shown it: "4 Special Tricks with the Victorinox Toothpick" kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5bMo6OvjKlqbZo And a plus is you don´t need a second SAK, you just need one with a toothpick.

THANKS! I was considering the swisstol spirit, but not anymore. It is shiny and beautiful, but if you put your feelings aside there are better Leatherman and Gerber multitools to chose from. I would rather have inside tools wich are easy to deploy, than outside tools that are difficult to deploy. Today I am using: - Skeletool for EDC - Gerber Center Drive for when I am working around the house. - Leatherman Super Tool 300 when at work (fire investigator. Digging out fire scenes).

Victorinox has consistently kicked out better fit and finish than any other commercial brand that I've crossed paths with for almost five decades. Not once have I purchased a Victorinox that was overlooked by their QC. Every other brand I've met makes me think that they require employing someone pulling bong hits and babbling maddening nonsense somewhere in the assembly process.

If deployment is such an issue to people I understand the review conclusions. Personally, given the robust nature of the tools, etc I don't see how Leatherman touches the big V. However I have a major caveat. I think the supplemental bit kits, and sheaths leatherman offers are very high quality and while the accessories for the Spirit are wonderful, the ratchet for the leatherman with its more horizontal structure is a great addition. if you buy the smaller leatherman bit set with the adapter for the mut, etc... the adaptor fits the victorinox phillips perfectly and you now have an alternative multi bit system for the spirit. Just take the part of the leatherman adaptor that is square shaped and pop it on the philips head.

Hey Dominic! Thanks for the great video! I really enjoyed it! For me personally the Spirit X is perfect and I never had any issues with the deployment. But that might be different for each individual. Regarding the the Free P4, which I really like, it is a completly different story in Europe. Here the Victorinox ist about 100-150 Euros and the Leatherman is almost 200 Euros. Adding that the Spirit has an even higher quality (even though both competitors are of very good quality) I would always go for the Vic. But as I said, I think that is highly depentend on were you live. I guess in the US I would also go for the Leatherman. Reagardinng the shared prive of the Spirit with and with out clip, why they dont have a different price is, because without the clip you get a leather sheath. So that is a fair deal. thats why the one without the clip isnt ceaper. Apart form that, I share your opinion, that the Vic is to expensive and they get even more expensive (e.g. Replica 125 Years). I bought the clip seperatly for 20 euros and even though its a very good clip its way to much money for a clip. I feel Victorinox gets more and more inadequate, that make me very sad.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but your issue with your fingernails might be remediated by greatly increasing your Vitamin C intake. 25 years ago, I took about 1 gram of Vitamin C daily, and still had chronic lower back issues, necessitating visits to the chiropractor on a yearly basis. I read an article suggesting that 5 grams daily would so strengthen your back as to eliminate problems. For the last 25 years I have been taking about 5 grams daily, and now at 73, my back is stronger than it was when I was younger, such that I have recently moved pianos without any issues. This also strengthens all other systems which are collagen protein based, including blood vessels, joints, tendons, and even our bones (osteoporosis is a Vitamin C deficiency disease), and our nails. I really appreciated your review of the Victorinox tool, and I will be continuing to use my Leatherman Wave. I have a Swiss Champion, which is no longer made, but preferable for me because it doesn't have a pliers. With my Wave in a belt pouch, I prefer the slightly thinner Champion. I just recently added a Volty to my Wave, a DC voltmeter in place of the reversible screwdriver bit. My Champion is going to be getting a Firefly ferrocero rod in place of the toothpick.

Spot on with your criticism of the nail shredding opening of the tools. I use the Leatherman Free P4, simply because I can easily open all the tools without tearing my nails. The Spirit X has all locking tools, and not slip joints, , so why does Victorinox incorporate bear trap springs just to keep the tools closed?? So easy to fix this problem. This is my biggest gripe with Victorinox multitools, including the awl on the back of e. g, the Super Tinker type. Second biggest gripe is with the scissors on this M-tool. They have room to increase the scissors' blade length but for some reason have fitted small blades with restricted blade opening. The best scissors, IMHO, are those on the Victorinox super tinker/delux tinker range. Surely they could incorporate these in the Sprit X. I really wanted to use the Spirit X, but sadly, I gave up on the Spirit X after repeatedly tearing up both thumb nails, and now use the Free P4. (and... Please don't tell me that you don't have a problem because you have nails like claw hammers! It's not about your nails, but about mine!!)

Weakness (or strength according to Victorinox): The knife steel on the Spirit is soft, but easier to sharpen if you're without a sharpening tool. It is also not as breakable compared to if they're of harder steel. Another problem, or weakness that i found out (after years of use), is how to deal with a worn out file, since all the tools are riveted. Do you have any idea how to do it? Do they have a replacement part for the file? Another gripe i have is the thickness of the scissor's cutting tips. You can't use the scissors if the object you're cutting is attached very near to a surface.

My recommendation for the problem of being able to open the tools better is very simple, just oil the retention mechanism. When the tool dries out over time, the friction becomes greater and it does not open easily. A little oil, I use Victorinox´s, open and close the tools a few times... and that's it.

LOTS of multitools are assembled over-tight at the factory. It shouldn’t be necessary, but you can usually fix this by loosening the screw a little. In your review sample, the tools on one side were harder to get out than the other. That’s just manufacturing variation (luck of the draw). If they had used a properly-set torque wrench to tighten the screws, they would have more consistent opening force. Somebody didn’t do their job on this tool.

Get some Gun oil on the tool sets. That makes it way easier to open.

I just one handed with a glove on and opened every tool on my P4 Leatherman. Can’t do that with the Victorinox. That is an upside that offsets every short coming with the Leatherman Free P4

Yep, I still think the P4 is almost right...just needed a better toolset, and NOT a price increase

@@maxlvledc I agree there are a few dumb tools. I would accept a Wave scissor for a Wave file. I like the pry tool so I am not sure I would sacrifice that for the bit. The depth measure tool is a waste but to keep the pry tool and add the bit I would need to sacrifice sacrifice two tools The measure tool is ok gone but the second would be a difficult choice. The can opener is not great but in a pinch it works.

Coality control is super good in Victorinox but Leatherman has almost duble the prices and coality control is realy pore(players are stif and its yust not comperable) and i really like Leatherman but cost 250€ and Mx Swis cost 150€.

@@maxlvledc I would have agreed with you yesterday, but today... I had to mod mine to open a bit more and I'll give you that they are not precise and refined like 91mm ones found on saks, however... These can CUT. Super robust. Only issue I had was doing my fingernails. Would I prefer 91mm? Hell yeah. But... Only scissors that I even remotely respect on LM are found on Surge. The rest of them tend to roll over way too much. So, while not the best from Vic, I still prefer them to Leatherman. They are just... Different. Halfway between scissors and wire cutters.
