The finger nail file tool is perfect for small Phillips head screws commonly found on children's toys for battery compartments, it is also perfect for loosening knots in rope and 550 cord.

The most important tool is one YOU HAVE when you need. I have several very nice Leatherman at home but...my silver Victorinox Cadet is always in my pocket even when I'm in a shirt and tie. Those slim Alox scales make the Cadet discrete to pocket carry. Its "good enough" in most cases although a scissors would be nice....8)

I've been carrying a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife every day for 20+ years, but not a Cadet. They are essential EDC gear and compliment a modern folder perfectly.

I have had this knife for nearly 20 years and had no idea it was still made. I love this baby and have used it daily as a cable installer. Never failed me once and is still flawless today except the knife blade is slightly smaller after 20 of regular sharpening touch ups. Bomb proof little knife. With this and my original Leatherman Wave, I can manage just about any task.

I carry Pioneers but thinking of buying the Cadet for my son for his first camping trip with his school. These coloured alox handles look great. The wire bender is not just for bending: when you open it to the 90-degree position you can insert the wire in the notch then close the knife blade on it and by rotating the knife you can cut through the insulation to strip the wire.

If you like the Cadet you should definitely check out the Victorinox Bantam. Due to the combined bottle and can opener is has almost the same functionality but only half the weight and size. :) I have compared them in a Video. Yes, it is german but maybe you can still get an impression: Victorinox Cadet vs. Bantam

That wire bender is also used in conjunction with the main blade to strip wires. Put a small wire in the notch, kick the driver into half stop position with the main blade half open, close the main blade on the wire and turn it. The driver in the half stop holds the wire, and the blade trying to close cuts as you turn the frame. I hope I explained it right.

I thought these were kids toys and was almost embarrassed to carry one. I have the field master and I’ve used it every single day for 2 years now! I find that I reach for it almost exclusively more than my bm 940 (my favorite knife). Can’t beat victorinox functionality. Just ordered cadet while watching this.

I've used the Waiter as EDC for many years but since most cheaper wine bottles no longer have corks so I can do without that. The most used item was the toothpick, but I actually did cut up a Swiss Card and just kept the toothpick, tweezer and nail file part and this goes in my coin pocket even on a plane. I like the Alox versions because they are stronger and you can actually put them in the dishwasher to clean if needed. The Cadet is my city EDC now and I refer to it as the gentleman's pocket tool. I do have the alox Bantam if I want even more light weight and thinner. In the outdoors I carry the Pioneer or my Dutch Army soldier model as last resort knife. I still did not dismiss the red plastic handle Waiter and Spartan but I throw them in my pocket as extra when on a city trip for instance, on a picknick or visiting friends where a bring a bottle of wine with a cork and not everybody has a corkscrew any more.

The other day I was talking to an old friend and he produced a knife from his pocket in just awful condition. I am not the sharpener you are yet but I do customer knives usually for other Navy guys. What I saw was pretty common. He said well you baby your knife, I use mine for a tool. I said, no brother, I have a Swiss Army knife in my other pocket for all that jazz. I love a cadet. Glad Nutnfancy sold them through the roof and kept them in production. If everybody had one, knife sharpener guys wouldn't have to take so much meat off your main blades. Just sayin'.

I totally get that, and rest assured, the title and tone of this video are a bit facetious. I realize that we all have our "go to" EDC tools for our own reasons, but for me and countless others, the Cadet fills a pretty neat role. My EDC pack contains a Leatherman Charge Ti, but it's not right there in my pocket all the time. The Cadet has such a great carryability and easy access to the tools I use so often, that it's won a special place in my heart. But since you and 1allspub feel so strongly about the Squirt PS4, I'm probably going to get one :)

The shield is anodized. I have used the pointed tip of the file on the Cadet, a number of other Victorinox and couple Wenger as a Phillips driver. It won't take massive torque, but for those that don't require high torque, it works well. Seems to fit #1 Phillips best. The wire "bender" is also a stripper. You can notch the insulation using the blade alone, or you can use the blade and the bottle opener open to 90 degrees to help nick the insulation, and then pull it off by using the notch to grab onto it. This video shows how to use that notch for a variety of tasks, including how to bend wire into a hook properly, and some others that are not very obvious or intuitive . . . kzbin.info/www/bejne/a323dKZqaJ6toqs

I am a little disappointed in my new alox Cadet after comparing it to my son's Tinker. I sure miss the tweezers and toothpick. Also the Cadet is missing the half stop on bottle opener/flat blade screw driver. And, the nail file on the cadet rubs badly against the main blade leaving deep scratches. They now put 2 washers in the blade pivot end to try to offset it, but fails. Because of the extra washer, that end is actually thicker than the opposite end. I've never seen that on a SAK. The whole knife seems skewed and doesn't have the traditional "snap" ApostleP has on his knife. Maybe I got a lemon...

I think you did because mine does not have scratches from the file or anything.

Tinker BEST edc knife ever made? How many times did you use the awl to stich something, how many times did you need two blade? The philips screwdriver,I think it's a wasted slot, since the flat (can opener) works the same on philips screws! IMHO Compact or Climber, are much better for edc. However I edc a Leatherman Wingman while I am in the city and when I go to the field, I add a Victorinox Rucksack.

if they added scissors like they did with the pioneer that would be cool.

I'm sure they'd sell a lot of those seeing how scissors is the favorite item for some... but the added thickness is a major drawback for others.
