Climber is typically less cost than the compact. I like the can opener on the Climber better than the combo tool as it works better for Phillips head screws. More often than not, screws are Phillips. I do wish all of the hooks had the nail file. I carried a Tinker for a long time, went to the Super Tinker to add the scissors but found the climber better because of being able to upgrade and add the micro screwdriver for glasses repair. Love your channel.

I fully agree with your title. I had a climber in the pocket 24/7/365 for the past 15 years until recently. I love it, love it, love it! For the sake of variety (and compactness), I changed for a compact with plus scales last christmas. After 9 months, I'm 90% happy with that switch. A 2 rows SAK is great, still miss the 3mm screwdriver and the hole punch on occasions...

wow i now use the climber hook every day..i ride a mountain bike and go shopping and strap all my goods to a basket using banjo like para chord with hooks...and the hook on the climber enables me to pull the hooks real tight and then unhook them...amazing ..i love the hook

Just got a blacky Climber for $10 that is a 1991 to 2005 era version in great condition. A little Flitz on the scales and a microscrewdriver in the corkscrew and it’s going to be my beater SAK. Remember to be kind

I so love my Hercules. It's the go anywhere sak of my choice. A few days ago, I received my Climber in camou and it was a hit to me because of its compactness but retains its pair of sharp scissors and I got me a hook ! Great tandem for my man-sized Herc!

Hey Dan. Do you know what other knives have the nail file on the back of the hook? I've had the Compact in my pocket for a few years and like that feature and of course the scissors, but miss the small blade and can opener/phillips function. The climber with plus scales looks like the perfect solution...or maybe the Mountaineer..... When is enough enough! I thought about experimenting on the back of the hook of one of my older knives to see if I could make it function as a nail file. Thanks for all the great videos!

Nice review. Have you considered the Super Tinker? It has same tools as the Climber except replacing the corkscrew with a Philip head which is more useful to me.

It's hard to get to screws sometimes with the dedicated Phillip's on the back. You can use the can opener as a Phillip's screwdriver.

A plus scaled Climber with the nail file hook from the Compact would be the perfect EDC knife, in my opinion. Since that exact knife does not exist without being custom made then the next best thing would be to pair a plus scaled Climber with a Classic SD or a Rambler.

Classic, I was about to make a similar comment. I prefer the 3 layer in the hand to the 2 layer, and already carry a Rambler all the time. Currently considering getting a Climber with a pocket clip to accompany the Rambler. Or maybe a Camper, to add the saw - a tricky decision, particularly as I suspect the saw layer is a touch thinner than the scissors…

@@GrahamAtDesk the saw layer is thinner than the scissors. It looks like it is only about 2/3 as thick. I have a Huntsman and a Ranger and they both have scissors and the saw so I looked at them for you. The Camper would definitely be a little thinner than the Climber.

Get a Midnite Manager (or a Manager if you still can). That way you've got both your ballpoint pen and nailfile needs covered (they're even better than the plus scale pen and the hook nailfile).

Hey Dan, I just bought a Climber. I'm pretty happy with it but the scissors are getting stuck when I use them. It feels like they are too tight and the spring is not strong enough to push them open. I can feel the blades grinding. Maybe that's normal with any new Victorinox and will get better after a while?

Hey, HeK! Thanks for watching! That sounds unusual, especially from a new SAK. I would try soaking in hot water (as hot as your faucet will run, not near boiling) a good scrub, and oil. I've also soaked saks in oil and it has helped. If you still have problems after awl that, I'd consider sending it in to Victorinox for repair/ replacement

I just wish they make the Alox Climber a thing. Slim it down a lil bit. My EDC now is just a Climber and a flashlight, no dedicated knife needed

Well since alox don't have backtools the Pioneer X would pretty much fit that description. 3 layers (but a little slimmer than the Climber since the alox scales are thinner than celidor). Obviously as an alox it can't have corkscrew or hook. Instead of secondary blade you get the inline reamer/punch, which is excellent. Rest of the tools are as per the Climber.

Do you know why the CAMPER doesn't include the parcel hook (all-purpose hook)??? The CLIMBER is also a 3 layer tool and includes the awl, corkscrew, and parcel hook. Why is that?

Have you seen the Evolution series? Scales are a bit different so it's a bit stubbier in the pocket, but they're nice. The Evolution 14 has the toolset you're describing. The scissors are slightly different and a little less beefy (they're the Wenger design), but they're not half bad.

Nice video, good content, but I beg to differ. I appreciate the practicality of having siccors, but in my opinion not worth giving up the saw over. Especially if you also plan to take your SAK with you on trips outdoors. I used to have a Camper, recently got a Hiker. Again, the corkscrew is nice to have but I find there are few situations in which a corkscrew really saves the day. I wish life was such that opening a bottle of whine would be a universal solution to practical problems, but as it stands I find it more comforting to have a sturdy phillipshead at all time.

All the 91mm SAKs are UK legal because the blade is under 3 inches (2.75") and doesn't lock (even if it was a 1" blade, if it is a locker or fixed, it's illegal to carry). Even so, with it being a, very rightfully, legal item, there is no trade of them, brand new or used, on eBay UK. Just accessories and oil. In the nanny state UK, there is the overlegislation, government involvement and the laws that are passed AND THEN there are companies and organisations (not 'erring on the side of caution', as I've heard some people put it) erring on the side of going even further than the law requires, in the name of their corporate image and 'political correctness' but how 'appearing to be even stricter than the law' became a trend in the UK that many people and companies follow, is beyond me. I can't understand it; unless it has to do with 'compensation culture' which is a big thing in the UK. No one believes in personal responsibility. Everything is somebody else's fault. Ebay might be afraid that if somebody buys a pocket knife using their website, then cuts themselves or somebody else, their parents, or even the buyer themselves, might sue eBay as being responsible (because if it weren't for eBay, the offender would not be in possession of the knife). That's how weird it is in batshit bonkers Britain. There's no trade in legal pocket knives or multi-tools on eBay but there is on Amazon. Go figure...

I carry a Climber attached to my keys everywhere. Not too heavy and genuinely useful. 2 ways to improve it- Changing the hook to the one from the Compact to add the file or changing the small blade for the file from the Sportsman. And changing the scales to plus scales so that the pen can be added. It's a shame that Victorinox don't offer these simple alternatives but then they'd rather sell a million different other variations of a million different knives it seems.
