You ought to get that price tag removed. Hope it doesn't stain or cause reaction to the plastic. I mean it doesn't matter, but it will just remind you how bad decision it was not to remove the sticker in the first place,

Have just discovered your videos Swiss army Dan. I carry my 4 layer knife regularly (an explorer at present). I would prefer the alox scales but would miss the toothpick and tweezers. I also like having a corkscrew. Wish they would make alox scales which could incorporate them

Good point about having a Classic SD on your keychain to back up your main knife. It allows one to choose a thinner, more pocket friendly main knife of your choice while retaining many capabilities. My personal favorite combination is the Classic SD, along with the Camper. This gives me great outdoor coverage (saw) while keeping the main knife down to three layers. I find three layers much more pocket friendly than four or more. Nice video.

Plus, the Classic SD easily fits in your 5th pocket on your jeans should you not care to carry it on your key chain. My key chain is too bulky as it is.

that Timekeeper has to be from post 1997 because the file on the hook was introduced in 1998. Would love to have a black one with roman numerals but they are over $300 and not worth it

At first I just wanted one of each MacGyver had ever used, but then you research history and out of productions stuff and it is easy to be addicted and wanting all of them! Even though I do not use them.. I find the Cadet and Sportsman to be some of the best ones to have around, with the new file. The Rambler is also a favorite. Small and compact, probably most of what you would need. I do wish they had some more with metal saw/file that was not that big/thick, the EVO S557 if it had a file would be pretty good. I have never understood the point with the small blade, they just waste space, but I know people love the little blade too.. The best thing on a pocket knife is I guess the toothpick, to pick out pocket-lint from USB ports. It is the perfect fit. The Cadet is missing that one though....

Great overview! Here in Switzerland, the category 2 seems to be hardest to find. I have around 350 SAK but only few of them are these vintage cellidor models. Old soldiers, old cross and Alox models are easier to find. Cheers, Mike

Excellent video as always, Dan! 👍 I'm guilty of collecting two of your categories: Soldiers and Old Cross. Got probably 15-18 Soldiers (model 1961) with all of the major 6 patterns. Plus 3 Old Cross, which are harder to find than Soldiers these days. You've got some great knives, especially in the vintage and weird categories!

I got to chat with our regional Victorinox representative recently. (I work for an AD). I made sure to bring in two old school models from my collection to show him. The first was a 1996 Alox soldier model with the bail. The second was an older (1950’s?) wenger with a bail, lined corkscrew, and oddly enough an aluminum crossbow shield inlaid into the plastic scales. I got it for cheap on eBay a few years ago, and cleaned up the tools on it. Our rep really was impressed! It’s definitely fun to search for some of the vintage SAK’s. : )

Wow! You don’t call, you don’t write…It’s great to hear from you again! As for the parcel hook. You are you familiar with the pour spout on a quart of Almond milk? There is a small cap with a pull ring. The parcel hook saves me every time on that cap. Great video. Thank you, S.A. Dan

Great to see that you're back! 👍 Good conversation topic! However, my picks are: - 58mm: Signature (a Classic SD with pen in one scale). I need the pen constantly and almost never a toothpick. - 74mm: I would omit this size as I don't get it. Bantam Alox would be my choice instead. - 84mm: we agree on the Sportsman. My honorable mention would be the Wenger Traveler (3 layers with scissors) which is also just 2.5 ounces. - 91mm: Compact is the king! - 93mm: Pioneer is also an all time favorite of mine. I like it more than the Pioneer X as I always pair it with a 58mm Signature and I hate tool overlap.

Great video, thanks for sharing. My first SAK was a Spartan Lite, 3 layers but w useful inline phillips. Now I own way more than I need. Regarding the Pioneer: I prefer the Soldier....got a few from the 70's, basically the same tools but thicker and w/o key ring. 👍

The thinness of the combo tool makes it a better can opener, in my vast and thrilling experience of opening cans, than the thicker tools. They all work really well, mind you, as long as you don’t overthink the whole issue, which we all do these days, *sigh*.

The Classic SD Alox is so thin and light that you can keep one in your wallet (law-permitting), or a coin pocket without even noticing. Manager, Compact, and (tragically discontinued) Executive are amazing, too. My favourite really is a Cadet X, which Victorinox sadly doesn't produce (Cadet with scissors). I custom made one and it's just about EDC perfection.

I use the Victorinox Deluxe Tinker for road cycling, I keep a Spartan or Climber or Signature Lite on my car keys, and I use a Traveler model around town. I’m not sure which model it is, but it has the altimeter and thermometer. I find now that I just use my Swiss Army knives, I don’t obsess about them the way I used to. But I still have a box in a bedroom drawer with a lot of other unused SAKs from Victorinox and Wenger. I value these knives and may share them with my nephews in the future.

I should say that the Deluxe Tinker is very useful for cycling. I often use the scissors for cutting open energy powder in little single-serve bags and the pliers for opening tight Presta valves.
