This is my EDC pocket knife. I have all kinds of fancy high end knives, including Zero Tolerance knives. The Pioneer is what I choose though. You don’t need a $200 knife to cut a box or peel an apple!

Same! I either carry a pioneer/soldier for edc or a farmer/farmer X when in the woods.

I’m a big fan of the pioneer, I used to carry the Pioneer X and I found it very useful, in fact I think it’s the best alox model. I’m now carrying the super tinker with the pocket clip and I love it. Another great review Ben. 👍

I think I could write a small book about Alox knives, or even only about the differences between the Pioneer and the Soldier :D But I'll just try to stick to a few sentences here. The tool set is the same because the Alox Soldier (model 1961) was based on the Pioneer that Victorinox introduced in 1957. Not only the Solier, also the Pioneer has changed over time. The Alox pattern and the lack of the engraving plate was the same on the OC (old cross) Pioneers made before 2000. On the Soldier, they used the new bottle opener (wire stripper notch, rounded edges, polished finish) since 1993. Before that, it looked like on the photo. (They also got rid of the hollow rivet in that year because it was not necessary for aiming with the grenade any more.) On the Pioneer, there are different combinations of the polished/machined finish and the notch vs. grind vs. both, and it seems that they changed those things back and forth. On the Sldier, they used the coat of arms on the front scale only from 1977. It only had a thick cross with the WK stamp before that. The Pioneer has the Vic logo since 2000. It had a simple cross before that (a thinner cross than the first Soldiers). As you mentioned, there are Pioneers without key ring. But not only special editions... Before Victorinox introduced the key ring (mid 60s maybe?), the Pioneers either had a bail or nothing. On the other hand, they also made some Soldiers for the civlian market with a key ring (mainly in the 90s). And there are some Pioneers (and other 93 mm models) that have a year stamped blade, because sometimes they used remaining Soldier blades for other models.

That is quite a bit of detailed information. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

@@txtoolcrib Also, adding to that, Victorinox does continue to stamp their knives with the year, but only the Soldier (new Soldier 08). Cheers

I've had this as my regular knife in a warehouse for a few years now, and it's been amazing. Sometimes I wish it could hold an edge better, but it's easy to bring back to razor-sharp :) Great review!

Yes, the old Soldier Vic's are nice. I have one for my HS Grad year of 01 and would like to get models from other years based on important events in my life. I have also considered modifying one to be a Soldier X as well but not sure. some would call modifying a soldier as Sakrilege .

The Pioneer and Cadet would be much better if they used the single combination can opener/bottle opener tool from the Compact, Bantam etc and then added scissors. It would be no thicker or heavier and a lot more useful

@alantheloneranger4 жыл бұрын
@@evillabrador1 Yeah, but they've had to add an extra layer. Whereas if they put the combination bottle/can opener on then they could have added the scissors without any extra bulk or weight
@miklospinter4 жыл бұрын
I like the separate opener much more, especially on the 93 mm. I'm not afraid to use a Pioneers cap lifter for some prying or for stuck screws. I'm not sure if a combo tool would have survived some of the things I already did with my Pioneer...
@alantheloneranger4 жыл бұрын
@@miklospinter Yeah, maybe the Pioneer is ok as it is because it's bigger than the Cadet and features the awl so it's more tool based. Whereas the Cadet has a nail file so i think it would benefit more with the scissors and combination can/bottle opener

The soldiers also had a keyring, the soldier you showed is a sturdy boy, a varient of the soldiers. Keyrings arent unique to the pioneer.
