Victorinox in wood. The best. Little bit more expensive, but good filling in hand and more traditional).

12:38 The trick is with the tinder! One good idea is to take a cotton make-up removal pad and rub some Vaseline (petroleum jelly) into it (or hand sanitizer gel). Store each in a mini Zip-loc bag. These are very easy to store in whatever bag/pack you have, or even half a dozen in your back pocket! I guarantee a spark, even from a firefly, will get a fire going first time with these pads. Nice video, Johnny!

The curved blade is for hunting it is used when you have shot a deer and need to remove the entrails you can use that blade to cut open the stomick on the deer without damaging the entrails and contaminate the meat.

Sir, thank you for this video, and the following video showing the clip mod. I have handled a Rangergrip before, and I liked the feel, but didn't pursue this series because the model I handled did not have the scale tools. That was probably 10-ish years ago, since I carried a 111mm SAK. Currently, and for quite some time, its been the Outrider. I can't tell you how many times, I wished I had the one handed opening bladed model. The outrider is my EDC tool/knife. Now knowing the 178 has the scale tools, I'm totally getting this! I'm happy I stumbled across your channel! BTW my carry of these bigger SAK'S has been with a small Nite Ize s-biner.

I have a Firefly in my SAKs too and I've found that a simple cotton ball is the best tinder. It's worked 100% of the time with a couple of strikes. The paracord didn't seem to work out in your trials and I believe if one needs to strike dozens of times to get a fire it's pointless to carry such a small fire rod. You'll go through it too quickly.

Informational video. I wanted the Ranger Grip 78 (non-serrated) in green and black, not available. Just bought the red an swapped scales, now I have the knife I want in the color I want. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Could you recommend a website to buy the scales to put on the non serrated ranger grip?

Very cool, thanks for the helpful comparison. The 57 Hunter is probably slightly more practical, but I really liked the look of the Ranger Wood 55. I’ve gotten the Firecord to light with an Exotac Ferro rod no problem. I think you might have better luck throwing sparks onto the cord by bracing the Firefly on the desk supported underneath by your finger, under the sawback steel, and striking downwards along the top of the edge, directing sparks right onto the cord. Some people use the flat of the Firefly, but Tortoise Gear says not to as it will thin the rod and it won’t stay in the handle, while using the edge just narrows the rod. Since I bought the Ranger Wood 55 and have no toothpick to remove for a Firefly, I bought the new Tortoise Gear FireAnt mini Ferro rod and helix tinder for the corkscrew. I had to give up the mini eyeglass driver, but that’s why they made the Compact model which I carry as a backup. 😎. Thanks again for comparing these models!

I tend to have the same idea as you concerning the phillips and corkscrew. If I'm picking a knife for work, I always need a phillips driver, but if I'm out hiking/camping those corkscrews really are awesome at untying knots. Thanks for this comparison, out of the three I think the rangerwood is my favorite. I just like the looks of that knife. Cheers, my friend.

You should learn how to use a ferro rod and how to use your firecord. That's definitely not the way.

I have had some success with the fire cord in perfect conditions, but the vaseline and cotton ball technique is fail safe. I usually support the Firefly ferro stick by laying it along my finger and striking the Firefly along the flat, rather than the edge, otherwise the darn thing tends to snap into pieces. I have even supported the Firefly ferro rod by placing it on top of the saw blade and using a separate striker to produce sparks. I wonder if the tweezer could act as a striker? Personally I think the fire cord is a bit gimmicky, and have started jamming a piece of vaseline soaked cotton ball under the can opener...easily removed with the tweezers, and 100% effective in fire starting. My first SAK knife was a Delemont...they have a special place in my Boy Scout heart.

Got the 58 for the simple fact I had no SAK without a corkscrew and I do very occasionally drink wine. The gentlemen of the road usually have screwtop bottles for when they develop a thirst these days so no one thinks you're a wino!!!

Replace the micro Philips screwdriver with the premade tinder that is specifically made to be stored in there and use that instead of the paracord to start a fire. Works way better.
