In my first 25 years of backpacking I carried a Swiss Army knife that had umpteen tools on it with the toothpick and tweezers. I gave it to a Saudi Boy Scout who impressed me so much with his first aid skills and I, as an Air Force IDMT, was his instructor. Well, he is now a well known physician in Dhahran. I bought a Spyderco version and it was okay. I just ordered the exact knife you reviewed, the Rangergrip 178 in green/black. I wasn't going to order it due to the serrations, however, after watching this video I'm glad I did. I also ordered a nice leather pouch with it. Thanks for the video and I love "y'awl" too :)

A feature you missed - the bottle opener/screwdriver will lock into place when you put sufficient pressure on it. A minor annoyance of the smaller SAKs is that tool has a tendency to close if you exert any force that isn't directly in line with the screwdriver. The Ranger Grip 78/178 solves that problem with a bottle opener/screwdriver that will recess a few mm into the body of the knife and lock until you stop applying downward pressure.

Yeah I’ve preferred serrated blades for quite some time only to find out I’m in the minority. Would love to see Victorinox add a metal file to this one.

My Rangergrip 78 has a hex bit driver hole under the scale on the shield scale. By cutting out the hex imprint on the inside side of the scale an extension for a screwdriver bit or a bit for 1/4" sockets, you can probably tackle frozen bolts that no other multi-tool can handle.

Cutting paracord is pretty much instant with any decently sharp blade. I do feel like serrations work particularly well on man-made material in general. One could argue it's more suited for urban environments for that very reason! To each his own though! Can't wait to receive my rangergrip 57 this Friday! Thanks for the video!

I bought a 79 and a 61 (no saw) I wanted the corkscrew for those times when somebody either didn't pack one or just can't find it. They're both great camp knives, with a slight edge to the 79 because of the saw. I regularly carry the 61 if it happens to be the first multitool I put my hand on in the morning.

I own both of those, as well. I switched the scales and put the green ones on the 79 and carry it on my hip in a custom made leather sheath. 🎉

Great video thanks. Great knife 🔪. I have the RangerGrip 79 as I like a corkscrew and already have a serrated blade on my RangerGrip Boatsman SAK. I like the saw as it is longer than my EDC SAK's the Handyman & Swiss Champ XLT. Love my Alox 7 Harvester SAK, too.

The reason why people don’t use serrations is that it’s very time consuming to field sharpen them and there are bushcraft things serrations just can’t do

I like larger frame pocket knives, and this one has so many uses, although I do not want serrations. The saw blade (on all multi-tools) seem to have a spine greater than 90 degrees which makes for a fantastic fero rod scraper as well as a scraper of tree bark, etc. I do not know why the wood handle model is $40 more. The handle scales on yours has such a good grip. I gotta get me one! Thanks for your informative videos. They are true to life.

@@gambet0007 Victorinox serrations are not hard to sharpen. Rounded ceramic rods and a small learning curve. Not like some deep, jagged zombie knife serrations! Victorinox sells a fountain pen sized ceramic sharper. Many Vic users like the common pattern of serrations at the tip end, a straight edge toward the handle. Good for push-cutting. Like on the Swiss Army issue Soldier Knife (now an officially US government listed knife in blackened US version available to US military and government agencies).
@gambet0007
@gambet0007 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidsiegel9847 I know, I own that fountain pen sized sharpener. My comment is in comparative to the regular edge. By the way I also have serrated victorinox medical version of its knife. It's great for cutting seat belts, paracord and rope etc, it's just that at camping site if you don't have that specific sharpener or know how to sharpen serrated blades, it can be difficult.

I have both the 79 and 61 (no saw). Both have the corkscrew and the plain blade. I've never liked serrated blades. The 61 is the better EDC tool, but I never go camping or hiking without the 79. In several ways it's a better camp tool than either of my Leathermans.

I think the Rangergrip 78 was one of the designs by Wenger that Victorinox acquired when the two companies merged in 2008. Sadly Wenger did not survive the crash. I also seem to remember this knife being the template for the current version of the German Army Knife issued tot he Bundeswehr. I have and love the older West Germany version of the German Army knife from the 1980s. It still has the soldier's name scratched into the blade.

This was the contender for the Swiss Army contract in the early 00. Victorinox got the contract with the knife that is also used by German forces as well as Dutch and, recently, US forces.

Love the ranger grip. I have the version that also has a curved skinning/ rescue blade in addition to the main but I had the non serrated version of yours that was stolen from my car. Love the handle. Basically that of a fixed blade but filled with excellent tools. The saw is amazing. Much more useful than the one on my Huntsman and even bigger than that on the Trekker. Compared even to the Trekker I find the handle more comfortable since it has the grip inserts.

I have a one hand Trekker and I like it.so I started liking Swiss army knives..so I went and got a swisschamp.and not happy the blades don't lock and that's dangerous..the blades are very Sharp. So remember to be careful. and there so small... I am not happy with the Swiss champ. I wish I would have went with the ranger grip 78.. I wish the ranger grip would at least come with a magnifying glass and another knife that would be perfect... Right now I'm looking at my swisschamp and I just don't like it it's a nice looking knife and the tools work great except for that stupid fish scaler but it's so small.. maybe I can trade it

Don't buy what you don't like. Victorinox makes many lock blade models, and sized up to 130mm. The 111mm size are all liner lock now. So many reviews, so easy to see attributes before buying. New WorkChamp with liner lock may be good for you. 111mm with lots of good tools, but fewer than SwissChamp, and heftier.

I never even held a locking blade until age 60. They are not inherently dangerous. Always had a slip joint in pocket as a boy. I have cut myself far more on fast action one-handed flippers and assisted openers than with slipjoints.

I got this version only with the wine cork opener. The cork opener twisted and torqued out of place on the VERY FIRST wine opening. It will not seat back in place now. VERY DISAPPOINTED. OH, how frustrating it is to be with a Russian supermodel on an Egyptian cotton blanket basking on a New Zeland hillside with a defective wine cork opener with nothing but beautiful clouds, the whisper of the wind, the songs of birds, crickets, the beautiful sunsets, and stars all around.
