The easier and safer way to close the large blade is by push the Vic logo.. This will disengage the liner lock

These were incorporated into Vic when they took over Wenger, their old Rangers are highly collectable and some are huge, especially the Mike Horn Ranger, Ranger Rescue and Alinghi. Great video on it, downside is the plier range, only half an inch XD.

I find these Ranger Grip designs fascinating to look at but I'm really more of a butterfly opening multi-tool guy. Ranger Grips are carried over from the merger with Wenger, just with new scales to accept Victorinox scale tools and a Victorinox push style can opener instead of the old eagle claw from Wenger. Got one for my grandfather's birthday a while back, the model 58 I believe. More his style than mine. Closing the blade seems fiddly at first because the lock is so deeply recessed, but it has a bit of a secret. The Victorinox shield on this model is actually a button that interfaces with the liner lock, so you can unlock it from the outside without ever putting your thumb near the blade like you'd have to do with most liner locks.

On a large tool the lanyard hole is usually for a wrist strap so you don't drop the knife in the mud, water or snow.

Reminds me of a knife multitool purchased from Australian Kmart (yes again) maybe 10 years ago, a carbon copy of which you can purchase on US amazon as the Raxco MS009B (only additions being a thumbstud for the knife, a screwdriver bit set + adaptor and a much nicer belt pouch). The design allows the pliers to open to about 150º or more (12cm/4.5" from tip to tip). This definitely affects durability (own 2 because the first one the pliers grip shifted and won't pinch closed completely when deployed) but damned useful.

The loop I would suggest isn't for a keychain, but for a string attached inside your pocket or inside your bag. The British Army call them admin lines. Just to stop you losing stuff. Nice review, I really like them. Not UK legal carry though unfortunately... so lame.

Picked up the 78 for $69 on Amazon. I like the 78 best for my needs. Instead of the corkscrew it has the Phillips driver and the one hand opening blade. Tossed it on the worksharp and the edge is now a Lazer.

I have a very similar tool, the Ranger Grip 174. It was very hard to get here in Australia. I had to get from a supplier in Germany. The 174 has combo blade rather than straight blade, and includes tweezers, toothpick and has hex bits that go into the side of the tool. Very nice tool to own, but not really suitable for my dirty, difficult EDC use.

Be careful with those pliers. I ruined mine on literally the first day I received it brand new. All I did was squeeze the pliers with a very firm grip and something inside the mechanism bent and they never functioned properly again. The handle became loose & floppy, would no longer engage and as a result, the plier jaws would no longer open as a spring-loaded function, but had to be manually separated. I had to exchange the tool through the mail. Hard lesson learned but these are only for very light duty tasks. Also, I paid less than $48 after tax, with shipping included. A killer deal, for sure, but just be aware of its force limitations.

Check out the Victorinox Ranger Grip 55 Onyx Black, I got it and the Signature Lite Onyx Black to go with the Spartan Onyx Black that comes with their I.N.O.X. Carbon Mechanical watch. It has the saw. Putting pliers on this type of knife probably made me laugh harder than the OP did at the size of the blade which is exactly what I would expect on a Ranger Grip. Pliers don't belong on this model and I'm sure it's one of the many they just announced will be discontinued.

@@hvacbudget8600 the best thing the rangergrip has going for it is the one handed blade and the long saw. The fact the 74 has neither would turn me away. I wish they had a 78 with the hex adapter that's found on the 174 and the boatsman. It's a shame victorinox has so few models with an inline Phillips or bit driver. I honestly haven't dabbled into alot of the newer swissarmy knife models. I'm still sour about losing my Swiss Champ.

It sounds like the Gerber dime might be your closest tool in the small category. The Leatherman squirt and the Discontinued SOG Cross grip could be two other options, though the Squirt doest have scissors and the cross grip is hard to find. I would check out the Roxon M2 and M3. Also the NexTool mini flagship and mini sailor might be good options.
